SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
 
From Gold Coast 17 March 2018 – Race 4: Trainer M. Costa was questioned regarding EPIC RANT settling towards the rear of the field, which was in contrast to its most recent starts. Mr Costa explained that he gave M. Cahill no specific instructions other than, from the wide barrier, to attempt to obtain cover. He added that he was surprised that the horse settled at the rear of the field. Stewards accepted his explanation.
 
GENERAL
 
As L. Cassidy was indisposed, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
 
Race 1: COUNTDOWN TO CARNIVAL BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP – 2220M
 
MAGNATUNE – Jumped awkwardly.
 
SAVWELL – Connections advised that the horse would be ridden back in the field with cover if circumstances permit. The horse settled at the rear of the field.
 
BACKHOUSE BILLY – Inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.
 

 
Race 2: STARLIGHT FAMILY RACEDAY QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 2040M
 
EPIC RANT – Trainer M. Costa advised that from the favourable barrier the horse would ridden more forward if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly. Held up rounding the home turn and had to check off the heels of the tiring OH WHY near the 300m.
 
IMPROVISE – Shifted in abruptly under pressure near the 300m. R. Fradd reported at scale that the filly travelled well, however did not finish the race off as expected.
 
OH WHY – Jumped awkwardly and then shifted out. Pulled hard in the early stages and after leaving the 1400m was eased to obtain a position with cover. Lost the near fore plate in running. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
HINCHINSTYLE – Bumped approaching the winning post.
 
SHOWY LADY – Pulled hard in the early stages.
 
YANKEE TANGO – Held up rounding the home turn.
 
CAPTAIN’S LEGEND – Raced wide from the 800m.
 
GO DIXIE – Connections advised that with the blinkers on the instructions to the rider will be to attempt to lead. The horse was ridden accordingly. Shifted in under pressure approaching the winning post and made contact with HINCHINSTYLE.
 
NAKED – Raced wide throughout without cover.
 
Race 3: MAKERS MARK CARNIVAL BALL QTIS 2YO H’CAP – 1200M
 
MISHANI HUSTLER – Trainer B. Currie was questioned regarding the tactics adopted today as compared with those adopted at the colt’s previous start at the Gold Coast. Mr Currie advised that at the Gold Coast the instructions were to push forward and lead if possible, however, after being hampered at the start, the colt settled further back than he would have wished. He said that the instructions today were always to go forward, the same as those issued at the previous start.
 
COSTALARGO – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout.
 
MISS SARA – J. Lloyd reported at scale that he had been instructed to lead but the filly did not show enough pace in the early stages.
 
ONE MORE CAST – Raced wide throughout.
 
OUT FOR JUSTICE – Hampered between runners on jumping.
 
SESAR – Slow to begin.
 
FIRST CLASS MISS – Raced wide without cover.
 
JULIANNE’S WISH – Jumped awkwardly.
 
KEIRABELLA – Had to be steadied away from heels near the 900m.
 
RED DOULTON – R. Stewart reported at scale that it was not his intention to race near the lead, however, when the filly began well, he elected to push forward from the wide barrier.
 
Race 4: SKY RACING TWO METRO WINS H’CAP – 1200M
 
SUNNY VICTORY was declared a late scratching at 2:01 pm on veterinary advice that the gelding was lame in the off foreleg. On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on SUNNY VICTORY be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 2:01 pm:
 
9 cents in the dollar for the win #4
9 cents in the dollar for place of winner #4
9 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #11
 
Trainer D. Duryea was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
 
HELAROCITY – Struck the back gate when being loaded, inspected by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to run. Bumped near the 900m.
 
DE VILLIERS – Shifted in and made contact with another runner near the 900m. Raced three wide without cover. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
FINAL ZERO – Apprentice A. Fancourt reported at scale that she had been instructed to lead on the mare, however, it did not show enough pace in the early stages.
 
Race 5: WEDDINGS AT BRC QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1200M
 
PAH TERIE – J. Lloyd reported at scale that approaching the 700m he was unable to restrain his mount and allowed it to stride forward three wide.
 
ARRESTAR – Shifted in on jumping and bumped another runner. Bumped approaching the 800m. Raced wide without cover.
 
SUSURRI – Got its head up after leaving the 1000m when steadying away from heels. Bumped after leaving the 400m.
 
CORAL BAY – Shifted out from behind heels approaching the 400m, and continued to shift out, making contact with SUSURRI. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.
 
BOLD ENDEAVOUR – Blundered on jumping and then was bumped heavily by the runner to the outside. Held up rounding the home turn. Blundered shortly after entering the straight.
 
LINE UP – Had to steady away from heels when weakening near the 300m. Galloped on on the outside of the near foreleg.
 
PROTEST – Got its head up approaching the 800m, shifted out and bumped another runner.
 
Race 6: MICHELLE ELKIN B’DAY OPEN H’CAP – 1050M
 
DAL CIELO – Shifted out on jumping, tightening runners to the outside. Raced fiercely in the early stages when being restrained. Held up rounding the home turn.
 
IN HIS STRIDE – Hampered shortly after the start when tightened for room between runners. Held up in the early stages of the straight and altered course to the outside near the 200m. M. McGillivray was questioned regarding why he did not take a run between TIYATROLANI and LIPSYNC after leaving the 300m. He stated that whilst the run opened for him momentarily, his mount was laying in and not in a position to capitalise on the run before it closed. The explanation was noted.
 
ANOTHER WHISKEY – Knuckled on jumping. Taken out shortly after the start and made contact with the hind quarters of another runner.
 
TIYATROLANI – Jumped awkwardly. Bumped on the hind quarters shortly after the start.
 
BEAT STREET – Raced wide without cover. Laid out rounding the home turn.
 
LIPSYNC – Trainer S. Kendrick was fined $200 for the late declaration of L. Tarrant as rider.
 
Race 7: MEGAPORT CLASS 3 PLATE – 1200M
 
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow apprentice T. Marshall, the rider of 3rd placegetter RIVER RACER, to view the stewards’ patrol footage to determine whether he had grounds on which to lodge an objection against 2nd placegetter MOGADOR. After viewing the videos apprentice Marshall indicated that he did not wish to proceed.
 
KING LEAR – Slow to begin and then shifted in and bumped another runner shortly after the start.
 
TIVOLI STREET – Connections advised that due to the number of scratchings and the resultant smaller field, they expect the horse to be ridden in a midfield position with cover. After being slow to begin and being bumped shortly after the start, the horse settled at the rear of the field.
 
COSMOPOL – Shifted out shortly after the start and made contact with another runner. Shifted out under pressure approaching the winning post, resulting in D. Browne having to straighten his mount.
 
LIFESAVER – Trainer M. Dunn was fined $200 for the late declaration of J. Byrne as rider. Connections advised that from the outside barrier the horse would be ridden in a forward position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly. Had to steady away from heels when tiring leaving the 300m.
 
MOGADOR – Jumped awkwardly. Had to steady away from heels near the 400m and then shifted out, forcing runners to the outside wider.
 
THUNDER ROCKER – Blundered at the 1100m and shifted in.
 
RIVER RACER – Had to be steadied when tightened for room near the 1100m. Shifted out away from heels near the 500m and made contact with another runner.
 
DREAM MASTER – J. Lloyd reported at scale that his mount failed to handle the track conditions today.
 
JETS CRACKER – Raced wide without cover. Bumped near the 500m.
 
Race 8: BRC MERCHANDISE OPEN H’CAP – 1350M
 
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow J. Lloyd, the rider of 3rd placegetter PELETHRONIUS, to view the stewards’ patrol footage to determine whether he had grounds on which to lodge an objection against 2nd placegetter PAYROLL. After viewing the videos jockey Lloyd indicated that he did not wish to proceed with an objection.
 
PAYROLL – Shifted out to improve near the 500m and made contact with another runner. Shifted out again approaching the 400m and made contact with another runner.
 
MR EPIC – M. McGillivray was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in near the 500m when not fully clear of PUNTA NORTE. Stewards adjourned an inquiry into M. McGillivray’s riding of MR EPIC in the early and middle stages of the event, when he raced five wide, to allow evidence to be taken from the Edmonds stable.
 
PELETHRONIUS – Bumped on two occasions between the 500m and the 400m when the runner to the inside shifted out.
 
PUNTA NORTE – Had to steady away from heels after leaving the 500m. Held up from the 500m until after leaving the 300m.
 
AQUA VITE – Raced three wide. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding had heat stress and thumps.
 
LUCKY BLACK – Raced three wide without cover. Eased over the concluding stages. Q. Krogh reported that he was under instructions to lead, however, when unable to do so, after passing the 800m he elected to race three wide and the gelding was immediately under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery.
 
MYSTIC OPAL – Jumped awkwardly. Held up rounding the home turn.
 
QUEEN OF WANDS – Raced three wide.
 
Race 9: GALLOPERS SPORTS CLUB BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1350M
 
Stewards accepted trainer C. Anderson’s explanation for the late scratching of CHAR CHAR at 7:40 am.
 
KARAKABEEL – Jumped awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with the runner to the inside and then blundered. Finished at the rear of the field. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Lost the off hind plate in running.
 
DENBERN – Raced in restricted room shortly after the start when tightened for room between runners.
 
LYRICIST – Shifted out to avoid the heels of the tiring IL RICCIO approaching the 300m and made contact with MISHANI SLEUTH.
 
BRED FOR LUCK – Held up approaching the 300m.
 
IL RICCIO – Raced in restricted room shortly after the start when tightened for room between runners. Finished at the rear of the field. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be short-striding in the off foreleg. Trainer T. Gollan was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again. Stewards intend to follow up with Mr Gollan in ensuing days regarding the horse’s post-race recovery.
 
OLD HABITS – Stood flat-footed and missed the start (2 lengths). Had to steady approaching the 300m and shift out to avoid heels.
