Murphy regarding his riding of STELLA OMBRA, in particular the reason for failing to restrain that gelding after passing the 1100m when racing to the outside of SWORD OF JUSTICE when the tempo was faster than expected, and furthermore that after obtaining the lead he failed to attempt to restrain STELLA OMBRA to slow the speed. Apprentice Murphy explained that STELLA OMBRA began well and he was instructed to ride the horse in a forward position and when racing to the outside of SWORD OF JUSTICE after passing the 1200m his mount began to overrace and for this reason he allowed the horse to stride forward of SWORD OF JUSTICE and obtain the lead passing the 800m as he was of the view that STELLA OMBRA may settle better when leading. He added that with the big weight today he was reluctant to overly restrain the horse as he thought this may have a detrimental effect on the horse’s chances. Trainer K. Schweida expressed his disappointment in the ride and was of the view that apprentice Murphy had erred in not making a greater effort to restrain the horse in the early and middle stages. Stewards advised apprentice Murphy that in their opinion he had erred by not making a greater effort to restrain STELLA OMBRA between the 1200m and the 1000m when the opportunity existed while racing to the outside of SWORD OF JUSTICE, and furthermore that he lacked judgment in, after obtaining the lead near the 800m, not making a greater effort to restrain the gelding and allow it the opportunity to finish the race off competitively. Stewards were not of the view that apprentice Murphy’s riding was so unreasonable as to be blameworthy under the rules and as a result took no direct action. PRIORITISE – Had some difficulty securing clear running in the early part of the home straight and near the 250m altered course to the inside in order to improve.
