SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
From Doomben 6.11.18 – Race 1: Stewards today concluded an inquiry into apprentice C. Bayliss’ riding of HOLDIN’ MY OWN. Of particular concern was the reason for him not attempting to ride the horse forward in the early stages and as per the instructions given by trainer Les Ross. After the race evidence was taken from apprentice Bayliss and the trainer of HOLDIN’ MY OWN, Mr Les Ross, and the matter was adjourned to enable stewards to examine betting activities on the race and to allow apprentice Bayliss’ master, Mr B. Lockwood, to give evidence.
Today evidence was taken from Mr Lockwood and further evidence was taken from apprentice Bayliss. Mr Lockwood explained that the racing manners of HOLDIN’ MY OWN, with the horse racing with a high head carriage and racing ungenerously, may have contributed to HOLDIN’ MY OWN not showing the necessary speed to hold a more forward position.
Stewards were not entirely comfortable that apprentice Bayliss had attempted to fully comply with instructions in the early stages and, furthermore, were concerned with the evidence apprentice Bayliss gave on the day regarding why the horse was not ridden forward. Whilst stewards were of the opinion they could not substantiate a charge under the rules, they referred apprentice Bayliss to the Riding Skills Panel for further tutelage regarding rides of this nature and the forthrightness with which he presents evidence in stewards’ inquiries to assist them with determining riding matters.
