Race 3: JOHNS LYNG MAIDEN H'CAP – 1640M ACEME, which became fractious in the barriers, was removed, examined by the veterinary surgeon and declared a late scratching at 2:57 pm on veterinary advice that the gelding was lame in the near hind leg. Mr Elliott indicated that consideration would be given to removing the blinkers for the gelding’s next race start. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a superficial laceration over the off hind tendon. ARGYLE SOLITAIRE – Had to be checked to avoid the heels of STEELCAPSTILETTOS near the 400m. FIZZ – Hampered and taken wider from the 400m until shortly after straightening. GOLDEN BASIL – Weakened badly over the final 600m. Trainer S. Du Plessis reported on scale that his mount was inclined to shift out under pressure in the home straight and it was his view that the horse was trying to get its tongue over the bit and he advised connections that the horse will benefit from the application of a tongue tie in future starts. Race 5: MORSE BUILDING CONSULTANCY BENCHMARK 70 H'CAP – 1640M ALPINE DANCER – Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice S. Thornton regarding the riding tactics she adopted on the gelding, which settled at the rear of the field in the early stages, which was in contrast to its most recent starts where it settled in a midfield position. Apprentice Thornton explained that in the early stages she was unable to maintain a position inside GREGORY as she was momentarily tightened and when the tempo of the race was fast she was not dissatisfied with her position in the early stages. Ms Thornton added that approaching and passing the 600m she was unable to shift out to improve as GREGORY was racing to her outside. Ms Thornton further explained that as she was unable to shift wider on the track at that stage, rather than cover additional ground on the home turn, she elected to remain to the inside and attempt to improve between GREGORY on the outside and COURAGEOUS ROCK on the inside. She was then obliged to race in restricted room when GREGORY shifted away from DANTE ROSSETTI near the 200m and over the final stages she was unable to fully test her horse when racing between GREGORY and CULLINGWORTH. When asked to comment on the instructions, trainer R. Heathcote explained that he was surprised that Ms Thornton did not make greater use of the horse in the early stages to settle further forward, particularly in front of GREGORY. He added that he was of the view that had the horse been ridden more aggressively in the early stages this may have been more beneficial to its winning chances. The explanations of both parties were noted. ELMO’S FIRE – Hampered at the start. SOLDIERS – Unable to secure clear running rounding the home turn and in the home straight until near the 250m. Race 6: ADVANCED BUILDINGS CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1350M METSON – Rider S. Cormack eased the pace when crossing to the lead near the 900m, resulting in THE BUMBLEBEE, which was following, having to be checked to avoid that runner’s heels. Jockey Cormack was cautioned for slowing the pace excessively at that stage. MY DELILAH – Had to be eased from the heels of RICHETTI near the 800m and shifted out and raced three wide from that point without cover. SAUTE – Shifted in under pressure near the 350m. EIRA – Had to be eased to avoid the heels of CURRUMBIN CRAFT when the pace slowed near the 900m. Momentarily tightened for room near the 350m. THE BUMBLEBEE – Had to be checked near the 900m to avoid the heels of METSON, which eased the pace. Race 7: STEAMATIC CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200M ZEPHETTO, which refused to parade to the barriers when entering the track, was declared a late scratching at 5:24 pm. On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on ZEPHETTO be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 5:24 pm: 5 cents in the dollar for the win #1210 cents in the dollar for place of winner #125 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #410 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #13 Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that ZEPHETTO must complete an official barrier trial prior to racing again.
