GENERAL
As B. Stewart was to be overweight in Races 2 and 3, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. B. Stewart was fined $150 for each infringement.
Jockey R. Plumb, apprentice J. Guthmann-Chester and apprentice J. Huxtable were each fined $200 under AR218(4) for being in possession of a mobile phone in the jockeys’ room.
B. Stewart pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct under AR228(c) in that he made insulting comments to the starter Mr R. Smith following the running of Race 10. Jockey Stewart was fined $500.
Race 1: TAB QTIS 2YO H'CAP – 1200M
MOONSHINER – Jumped away awkwardly. Raced ungenerously when being restrained in the middle stages.
THUNDER MANIA – Had to be eased near the 900m when briefly tightened for room by QUEEN SWEEPER, which shifted in slightly. Shifted out when improving around the field rounding the home turn, made the turn wide and had to be corrected by its rider.
QUEEN SWEEPER – Held up for clear running in the early part of the home straight until improving between MOONSHINER and COSMIC GOSSIP near the 200m, and in doing so made contact with the hindquarters of MOONSHINER.
Race 2: MEMBERSHIPS @ BRC MAIDEN H'CAP – 1200M
KIWI SHOWGIRL was a late scratching at 12:43 pm on veterinary advice that the horse had an elevated temperature. On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on KIWI SHOWGIRL be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 12:43 pm:

1 cent in the dollar for 2nd place #8
1 cent in the dollar for 3rd place #7
Trainer T. Cotsiopoulos advised that she will have blood tests carried out on the mare, the results of which will be reported to stewards.
The start of this race was delayed when TICINO BELLE and MORE SHOTS proved difficult to load.
HALLSIDE HOT STUFF – Blundered soon after the start. Raced three wide without cover.
MISS PENFOLD – Bumped soon after the start and lost ground. Had to be restrained near the 1000m when tightened for room between CLAIRVUE SPIRIT and MORE SHOTS, which was taken in by TICINO BELLE, which shifted in when not fully clear. D. Smith, the rider of TICINO BELLE, was severely reprimanded and advised to show greater care when shifting ground.
MORE SHOTS – Proved difficult to load. Had to be restrained near the 1000m when tightened for room between MISS PENFOLD and TICINO BELLE, which shifted in when not fully clear. Held up for clear running approaching and rounding the home turn. Had to be checked near the 50m when tightened for room.
TICINO BELLE – Proved difficult to load. Held up over the final stages and went to the line not fully tested.
DARING BELLE – Raced three wide throughout.
JOMERA – Raced wide throughout.
CLAIRVUE SPIRIT – Jumped away awkwardly and made contact with MISS PENFOLD. Held up badly in the home straight and went to the line not fully tested. The veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding had a laceration to the tongue post-race.
Race 3: GIRLS DAY OUT RACEDAY MAIDEN H'CAP – 1640M
HUSTLED – Overraced and threw its head in the air in the early and middle stages. Inclined to hang in under pressure in the home straight.
NEPTUNE’S CHOICE – Held up approaching and rounding the home turn.
BETTER BROTHER – Shifted in abruptly at the start, despite the efforts of its rider, and made heavy contact with BAMBALAM, which in turn bumped THE GOOD THE BAD, which had to be checked when taken across the heels of SUCCEEDANDCONQUER. Raced wide in the early stages. Had to be restrained from the heels of HUSTLED near the 1000m when that runner was racing fiercely and throwing its head in the air and improved around the field three wide to race outside the leader by the 800m.
BAMBALAM – Bumped heavily at the start and in turn bumped THE GOOD THE BAD. Raced three wide in the early stages before being ridden forward to eventually take the lead near the 900m.
SUCCEEDANDCONQUER – Shifted three wide in an attempt to improve after passing the 800m.
VINASTA – Began very awkwardly and lost ground.
ARCING HARD – Overraced in the lead.
OCTAVIAN – Raced three wide without cover in the early stages.
THE GOOD THE BAD – Bumped at the start and had to be checked when taken across the heels of SUCCEEDANDCONQUER.
Race 4: SOCIETY ROKU GIN NYE PARTY QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H'CAP – 1350M
NAVAL STRIKE – Slow to begin.
STEP ASIDE – Raced three wide without cover. Lost the off hind plate in running.
NALSSENDORI – Commenced to overrace after passing the 1200m and had to be restrained from the heels of MISS ALLE BE. Again improved on to heels approaching the 1000m and had to be restrained. Laid out passing the 500m and became awkwardly placed at the heels of WHOSTOPPEDTHERAIN. It was reported post-race that the gelding had sustained an abrasion to the offside hock.
SHONO MERCY – Commenced to overrace after passing the 1000m and had to be steadied away from the heels of NALSSENDORI. Approaching the 900m, when overracing, was unable to avoid the heels of NALSSENDORI, clipped that runner’s heels and fell. In this incident SHONO MERCY sustained a fractured off fore humerus and had to be euthanased on humane grounds. Stewards will interview D. Smith and N. Day, the rider of NALSSENDORI, at a later date regarding this incident. Rider D. Smith was conscious following the incident and advised that he had sustained no injury other than some soreness to his left knee. However, jockey Smith was advised that he would be required to produce a medical clearance prior to his next race ride. Post-race swab samples were taken from SHONO MERCY.
SPURIOUS – Raced three wide with cover.
FLICK – Connections advised that the horse would be ridden forward if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
WHOSTOPPEDTHERAIN – Raced three wide with cover.
Race 5: GALLOPERS SPORTS CLUB CLASS 5 H'CAP – 1200M
SMARTYPY – Inclined to lay in for a major part of the race.
JOHNNY WHITESOX – Raced three wide without cover throughout.
BOLD WARRIOR – Overraced in the middle stages. Held up rounding the home turn.
QIJI PHOENIX – Slow to begin.
TAKOTSUBO – Whilst weakening approaching the 300m, became awkwardly placed at the heels of DOWNLOADING, which shifted out to improve. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be showing some soreness in the near fore foot. Trainer R. Lipp advised that the mare is better suited on rain-affected tracks and would now be sent for an immediate spell.
Race 6: SOUTHS SPORTS CLUB CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1640M
CANAPES was a late scratching at 3:22 pm on veterinary advice after the horse dislodged rider L. Cassidy during its preliminary and galloped for a considerable distance. On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on CANAPES be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 3:22 pm:

IPSO NEM FELEK – Raced three wide in the early stages before taking up a position outside the leader by the 1000m.
SLOW HANDS – Reared at the start and lost ground. Bumped on the hindquarters by CURRUMBIN CRAFT approaching the 600m.
SCILAGO – Became awkwardly placed at the heels of CURRUMBIN CRAFT approaching the 250m and had to be steadied.
PINTANG PRINCE – Overraced in the early stages.
STARBUSTER – Shifted to a three wide position to improve after passing the 800m.
CURRUMBIN CRAFT – Laid in approaching the 600m and bumped the hindquarters of SLOW HANDS. Approaching the 400m forced wider on the track by SLOW HANDS, which shifted out to improve. Laid in when placed under pressure approaching the 300m, causing its rider to stop riding and straighten, and in doing so shifted back out slightly, inconveniencing SCILAGO.
Following this event L. Cassidy was examined by the Club doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.
Race 7: THE SPIRIT OF BOOM PHELAN READY STAKES – 1110M
WAR MEMORIAL – Made contact with the outside rail in the saddling enclosure, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.
On pulling up, RATHLIN appeared to take fright and shied, dislodging rider L. Currie. As a consequence, KAVAK (J. Byrne) and WAR MEMORIAL (L. Cassidy) took fright at jockey Currie, also dislodging their respective riders. As the fallen riders were being attended to by paramedics and unable to weigh in, stewards exercised their powers under the provisions of AR208(3)(b) and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings.
After examination by the Club doctor, jockey L. Currie was cleared to fulfil his remaining engagement and riders J. Byrne and L. Cassidy were stood down from their remaining engagements and riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
Race 8: BRC ROYAL ASCOT TOUR BENCHMARK 65 H'CAP – 1110M
BRINKMANSHIP – Jumped awkwardly and lost ground. Overraced in the early and middle stages.
I AM THE GENERAL – Had to be restrained passing the 600m when tightened for room between ARTERIAL and MICK THE HAT, which shifted out when not fully clear. Apprentice J. Murphy, the rider of MICK THE HAT, was reprimanded.
I LIKE CANDY – Raced three wide without cover.
SISTER KITTY MAC – The veterinary surgeon reported that the horse had sustained lacerations to the off hind cannon consistent with being galloped on.
SEND US A SIGN – Slow to begin. raced three wide with cover.
FACTORY WARRIOR – Approaching the 900m had to be steadied away from the heels of SUPERSONIC BOOM, which shifted in. S. Cormack, the rider of SUPERSONIC BOOM, was advised to show greater care when shifting ground. Improved to the inside of the heels of SUPERSONIC BOOM passing the 600m and had to be restrained. Had some difficulty securing clear running rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight.
ARTERIAL – Raced three wide throughout. Approaching the 250m had to be checked away from the heels of MICK THE HAT, which shifted out when not fully clear. Apprentice J. Murphy, the rider of MICK THE HAT, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR131(a) in that at that point he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of ARTERIAL, resulting in that runner having to be checked. Apprentice Murphy’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 6 days, commencing midnight Saturday 21 December and expiring midnight Friday 27 December 2019. In determining penalty, stewards took into account apprentice Murphy’s plea of guilty, his extremely good record in relation to this rule and that the interference was in the low range.
Race 9: BOOMER BLOODSTOCK CALAWAY GAL STAKES – 1110M
MISS LOT WON – Slow to begin.
SIP IT SLOW – Shifted out abruptly soon after the start and lost ground. Raced three wide without cover.
SMART ‘N’ SEXY – Slow to begin. Held up in the early part of the home straight and passing the 200m had to be steadied away from the heels of HAMILTON HILL.
Race 10: HAMILTON HOTEL CLASS 2 PLATE – 1350M
AJANI – Raced three wide in the early stages.
METAMORPHIC – Held up from the 500m until over the concluding stages.
P’ARTIE TOWN – Slow to begin.
DIOMEDES – Raced three wide.
HEART ATTACK – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped MULWALA CANAL, which in turn shifted in and bumped NATASSA.
MULWALA CANAL – Bumped at the start, shifted in and bumped NATASSA. Raced three wide without cover throughout.
ABB ROY – When questioned regarding the horse’s seemingly improved performance, connections advised that at its previous start at Texas the mare did not appreciate the firm track on that occasion and had jarred up. They added that the mare was suited by today’s bigger track and the step up in distance and that a forward showing was expected. They further added that the horse will now be sent for a spell. The veterinary surgeon reported that the mare was showing signs of soreness in its near fore foot post-race.
PORTUGUESE TART – Raced three wide.
SANTARENE – Trainer D. Murphy was fined $100 under AR65(1) for failing to produce the horse’s Thoroughbred Identification Card. Improved into restricted room to the inside of BIRKIN BLACK approaching the 400m and had to be steadied.
NATASSA – Bumped at the start.
