GENERAL
Stewards approved the following overweights:
Race 9. R. Maloney +0.5kg
Race 9. J. Huxtable +0.5kg
Race 1: RACECOURSE VILLAGE QTIS Two-Year-Old Fillies Handicap 1200 metres
MIGHTY – Approaching the winning post had to be steadied when placed in restricted room between SURREAL ASCOT which shifted out under pressure and STAR ACT which shifted in. Apprentice A. Jones, rider of SURREAL ASCOT, was advised to stop riding and straighten her mounts in future.
KITRI – Bumped on the hindquarters shortly after the start. Leaving the 1000m, became momentarily awkward at the heels of BERNICE’S SPIRIT after that runner was carried wider. Passing the 200m was obliged to shift wider to secure clear running.
STAR ACT – Bumped on jumping with FIVE STAR VIXEN. Approaching the 1100m momentarily raced in restricted room to the inside of RICH MINX which shifted in whilst racing greenly. Leaving the 200m, momentarily steadied when racing in restricted room between RICH MINX and FIVE STAR VIXEN.
FIVE STAR VIXEN – Bumped on jumping with STAR ACT. Held up for clear running for the majority of the home straight and was unable to be fully tested by its rider.
RICH MINX – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 1100m, commenced to race greenly whilst being steadied and continued to race greenly for the majority of the event. Ride B. Thornton advised that the filly raced greenly throughout which was detrimental to its performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.
BERNICE'S SPIRIT – Bumped shortly after the start. Leaving the 1100m was inconvenienced and carried wider by RICH MINX which was racing greenly.
THREDBO – Hampered shortly after the start and lost ground. Raced keenly at heels leaving the 900m and had to be steadied on a number of occasions. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
Race 2: TEDDY BEARS PICNIC AT THE RACES Class 3 Plate 2020 metres
The start of this race was delayed when PIRAEUS became cast in the barriers and had to be removed and undergo a veterinary inspection. PIRAEUS was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 12.36pm after becoming cast in the barriers. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all bets on PIRAEUS be refunded with the following deductions:
1st CHAYSE ‘N’ ARTIE 5c win, 4c place
2nd SHEZADANDI 8c place
3rd CRADLE OF LIFE 9c place
Co-trainer Mr R. Freedman was advised that PIRAEUS will require a further barrier certificate prior to racing again.
BOLD DELAGO – Slow to begin. Over raced during the early and middle stages.
GULF OF SAROS – Raced wide until ridden forward to take up a leading position near the 1100m.
MASTER MARKO (NZ) – Raced wide until the 1400m.
TONY BE – Leaving the 900m improved onto heels, shifted out and bumped MARIINSKY.
BUMP'N'RUN – Raced wide throughout.
MARIINSKY – Leaving the 1000m, shifted wider when the pace of the race steadied. Passing the 900m was bumped by TONY BE. Leaving the 300m, obliged to shift out and away from the heels of CONTRIBUTE which shifted out to improve. Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor, rider of CONTRIBUTE, was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident.
VIADELAMORE (IRE) – Near the 1300m, improved onto heels when the pace of the race steadied and shifted wider.
CRADLE OF LIFE – Apprentice A. Jones advised at scale that it wasn’t her intention to race in a forward position however after beginning well, and being caught wide she elected to allow her mount to stride forward when the pace of the race was only steady.
SHEZADANDI – Held up for clear running on rounding the home turn until a point leaving the 300m.
Race 3: BRC MEMBERSHIP ON SALE NOW BENCHMARK 90 Handicap 2020 metres
MISSISSIPPI PRINCE – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
OTYRAR (GB) – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
STUCK WITH YOU (NZ) – Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor reported at scale that with the small field and with no other runners electing to take up a forward position, he allowed the horse to stride to the lead.
WAIRERE FALLS (NZ) – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
MUBARIZ (GB) – Raced in restricted room shortly after the start. Jockey S. Collett, rider of WAIRERE FALLS, was advised to stop and straighten her mounts in future.
ATLANTIC EAGLE (NZ) – Raced in restricted room shortly after the start. Retired from the event near the 700m due to the rider having concerns with the mare’s action. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be significantly lame in the off foreleg, and was treated on course for a tendon injury. Trainer P. Duncan was advised that the mare will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
Race 4: CASCADE Fillies and Mares No Metro Wins Handicap 1110 metres
RELIABLE RUBY (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Steadied from heels at the 700m. Held up for clear running approaching the home turn. Held up for clear running approaching the 200m before shifting inwards to secure clear running.
MISS BARTY – Raced wide throughout.
INASEC – Momentarily raced in restricted room leaving the 600m. Apprentice A. Jones dropped her whip near the 150m.
BARISTASISTA – Leaving the 800m raced keenly at heels before shifting wider on the track. Bumped on the hindquarters at the 500m and became unbalanced.
FIELD WIRI – Slow to begin. Approaching the 500m, laid out and away from GEE BEE ESS, becoming awkward at the heels of BARISTASISTA, making contact with that runners’ hindquarters and having to be checked.
GEE BEE ESS – Leaving the 800m raced keenly at heels. Steadied from heels at the 700m. At the 500m laid out when racing greenly. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn until leaving the 300m. Approaching the winning post appeared to jump a shadow resulting in its rider becoming unbalanced. Rider S. Cormack reported that his mount had a tendency to race erratically during the event.
POWER BOOM – Over raced leaving the 800m and improved onto heels and had to be steadied.
Race 5: SKY RACING Class 6 Handicap 1615 metres
BE WATER MY FRIEND – Bumped after the start. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
ASHGROVE – Shifted out at the start and bumped BE WATER MY FRIEND. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
SELEQUE – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages.
MATOWATAKPE – Trainer J. Bruce advised that the gelding will be ridden more forward if circumstances permit. Began awkwardly and settled in a midfield position.
LOVE SENSATION – When asked to comment on the performance of the mare, apprentice A. Jones stated that the mare may not have run out a strong 1600m and in her opinion, may have come to the end of its preparation. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying signs of a poor post race recovery. Trainer T. Gollan advised Stewards that the mare would now be retired from racing.
KAIBERRY (NZ) – Stewards noted the explanation of trainer Mr R. Laming for the late declaration of rider. Raced wide throughout.
LE HEROS – Approaching the 1500m, became awkwardly placed on the heels of AZZAREACH when racing in restricted room and had to be steadied. When racing wide, commenced to race erratically approaching the 1400m when being restrained, and continued to do so for some distance.
ROMAN HEIR – Slow to begin.
Race 6: XXXX DRY QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap 1050 metres
JEMELDI – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
MATILLY – Began awkwardly.
REDZOUST – Slow to begin. Shifted out under pressure near the 150m.
BRING ME KASH – At the 700m, steadied from the heels of VODKA MARTINI which shifted out after being crossed by MATILLY. Over raced during the middle stages.
VODKA MARTINI – Leaving the 800m, commenced to race keenly after being crossed by MATILLY and shifted out.
QUEEN ASSASSIN – Co-trainer Mr S. O’Dea was fined $100 under LR67(1) for the late declaration of rider. Approaching the 900m, had to be checked from the heels of MATILLY which shifted in when not fully clear. Rider of MATILLY, J. Stanley pled guilty to a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a). Stewards after taking into account rider Stanley’s guilty plea and excellent riding record over a significant period of time, suspended his license to ride in races for a period of seven days commencing at midnight the 29th of July 2023 and ending at midnight the 5th of August 2023. Mr Stanley was advised of his rights of appeal. Steadied from the heels of BRING ME KASH at the 700m. Over raced during the middle stages.
STREET SMARTS – Brushed at the 150m by REDZOUST.
WISH I HAD – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
Race 7: LADBROKES MATES MODE Colts, Geldings and Entires No Metro Wins Handicap 1110 metres
PIVOTAL MOTION – Began awkwardly.
ANDY – On entering the home straight, became momentarily awkward when racing to the outside of RALPHIE which shifted out to improve.
RALPHIE – Over raced during the middle stages. Held up for clear running approaching the home turn.
READY FOR ANYTHING - Raced wide throughout.
SIDEARM – Approaching the 1000m raced keenly at heels for a short distance.
THELWELL – Began awkwardly.
ZINGALONG – Laid out on rounding the home turn.
UNCLE RUSS – Trainer Mr J. Bruce advised of a change of tactics in that the gelding will be ridden more forward if circumstances permit. After beginning only fairly, the gelding settled in a midfield position. Over raced during the early stages. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. Trainer J. Bruce advised he was disappointed with the performance, however he was of the opinion that the gelding may appreciate a step up in distance and he would be continuing with the racing preparation of the gelding.
ALL STARS – Hampered shortly after the start.
Race 8: COUNTRY MUSIC RACEDAY 9 SEPTEMBER OPEN Handicap 1200 metres
SIMPLY FLY – Began awkwardly. Raced wide throughout. Forced wider at the 700m. Leaving the 600m, had a tendency to lay in.
ROMAN AUREUS – Slow to begin. Leaving the 1000m, commenced to over race and got its head up. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn until the 250m.
BONAPARTE – At the 700m improved onto heels of WISDOM OF WATER which shifted out.
SNOWZONE – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
SALATEEN – Began awkwardly.
WISDOM OF WATER – Began awkwardly. Near the 700m, after racing keenly at the heels of BONAPARTE, was shifted wider on the track and then raced three wide from that point onwards.
BOMBASAY – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Leaving the 1000m commenced to over race and became very awkward in its action and lost ground. Laid in from the 600m and continued to do so for the remainder of the event. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. Trainer W. Bannerot was advised that the gelding must barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing again.
HARD LANDING – Raced wide until the 800m.
Race 9: GALLOPERS SPORTS CLUB BENCHMARK 78 Handicap 1350 metres
BEAUFORT PARK – Raced wide throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
ACCESSORY – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 1000m, raced in restricted room. Approaching the 900m was obliged to shift in when awkwardly placed at the heels of WOLF MOON.
PRINCESS TENKO – Raced wide throughout. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the mare, rider J. Orman advised that from the wide barrier he envisioned being able to secure a forward position with cover, however, he was unable to do so and raced three wide without cover throughout. He further added, that given the tempo of the event, he would have had to have placed PRINCESS TENKO under significant pressure to improve forward to find a position closer to the rail which in his opinion, would have been too much of an effort to ask of the mare. Stewards noted the comments of jockey Orman.
RAGING POLE – Raced wide throughout.
SCOTTISH PRINCE – Hampered shortly after the start. Raced wide throughout.
HOKAHEY – Began very awkwardly. Approaching the 900m, had to be steadied from the heels of ACCESSORY which shifted in when racing in restricted room. Improved onto heels approaching the 150m and was unable to be fully tested by its rider for the remainder of the event.
ROSE OF DUPORTH – Improved onto heels approaching the home turn and had to shift wider. Momentarily raced in restricted room approaching the 200m.
WOLF MOON – Knuckled on jumping. Approaching the 900m raced in restricted room for a short distance. Improved onto heels leaving the 200m and was obliged to shift wider at the 100m to secure clear running.
GAIUS – Hampered shortly after start.
TWO SMOKIN BARRELS – Slow to begin.
