GENERAL
As jockey B. Thompson was indisposed, rider replacements were as per the Raceday Summary Report.

Stewards approved the following overweights:

Race 1: STRADBROKE SEASON ON SALE NEXT WEEK MAIDEN PLATE  2040 Metres
 
BRING THE CHAMPERS – Over raced during the early stages. Raced wide throughout. Approaching the 500m, whilst weakening had to be steadied when racing in restricted room. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying an upper respiratory noise. Trainer B. Ahrens was advised that BRING THE CHAMPERS must obtain a veterinary clearance including the results of an endoscopic examination prior to racing again.
 
HOW YA BEEN ANYWAY – Shifted out on jumping and bumped LICENSE TO THRILL. Over raced during the early stages. Leaving the 600m had to be steadied from heels. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn then disappointed for a run leaving the 250m and had to steady, shifted outwards and was then held up for a short distance before shifting in approaching the 100m to secure clear running.
 
LICENCE TO THRILL – Bumped on jumping. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion commenced to lay in when racing in restricted room then continued to over race for the majority of the event.
 
SUPER FENKEL – Shifted in on jumping and bumped PLEADEEL. Raced wide throughout.
 
THE IRISH (IRE) – Hampered on jumping. Bumped and became unbalanced leaving the 400m.
 
VENTUROUS – Over raced during the early stages.
 
TARANAKI (NZ) – Held up leaving the 600m, shifted out in an attempt to secure clear running leaving the 400m but was unable to do so when THE IRISH held its racing line and as a result TARANAKI had to be checked before then shifting wider upon entering the home straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stewards opened an inquiry into the tactics adopted by jockey J. Orman. After taking initial evidence, Stewards adjourned the matter to a date and time to be fixed.  
 
THE GARF – Leaving the 1600m had to be steadied when crowded for room from MISS BRITTANY when that runner shifted in and away from IN THE PICTURE, which shifted in when racing ungenerously.
 
AQUA ROSA – Momentarily steadied approaching the 100m whilst weakening.
 
FRIJOLES – Raced in restricted room approaching the winning post on the first occasion, bumped and became unbalanced. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn until a point approaching the 150m.
 
IN THE PICTURE – Shifted in on jumping and bumped THE IRISH. Over raced approaching the winning post on the first occasion when the pace was only steady and shifted out abruptly from heels, and then continued to over race for some distance. Raced wide throughout. Approaching the 300m, clipped the heels of PLEADEEL and blundered. At a subsequent inquiry, M. Hellyer, rider of PLEADEEL pled guilty to a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in that he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting wider approaching the 300m which resulted in IN THE PICTURE clipping his runner’s heels and blundering. Jockey Hellyer’s license to ride in races was suspended for 13 days commencing midnight the 13th of January and ending midnight the 26th of January 2024. Jockey Hellyer was advised of his right of appeal.
 
PLEADEEL – Over raced during the early stages.
 
Race 2: BECOME A BRC MEMBER MAIDEN HANDICAP   1110 Metres
 
The start of this event was delayed slightly when DREAM SMART proved difficult to load. Trainer Mr L. Birchley was advised that a warning would be placed on the barrier manners of the filly.  
 
SIR LEONIDAS – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 700m, improved onto heels. Approaching the 200m, improved onto the heels of ABRACAZAM, and had to be steadied for a short distance.
 
PRAIRIE LEGEND – Approaching the 700m, improved onto heels. Held up for clear running approaching the home turn. Leaving the 200m, raced in restricted room and had to be momentarily steadied when SIR LEONIDAS shifted in after improving onto heels.
 
CAXTON LASS – Raced wide throughout. When asked to comment on the performance of the filly, rider R. Rolan reported that she had a tough run, and raced wide throughout and he was satisfied with the effort of the filly.
 
PINK THUNDER – Obliged to alter course approaching the 100m. When questioned regarding her decision to shift to the outside of ARISPHERE approaching the 100m, apprentice C. Graham stated that her mount failed to quicken as expected in the home straight and was somewhat one paced and although a run had started to present between BLOODHAWKE and ARISPHERE approaching the 100m, she felt that both runners were showing a tendency to shift ground and for this reason she elected to shift wider around ARISPHERE to secure clear running. Apprentice Graham further added that her mount only finished off fairly over the final 100m. Stewards noted apprentice Graham’s comments.  
 
DREAM SMART – When asked to comment on the performance of the filly, jockey M. Rodd stated that the filly raced greenly particularly in the early stages when attempting to get the filly to settle into a rhythm, DREAM SMART came off the bridle and raced greenly. He added that DREAM SMART finished the race off well and will benefit from the raceday experience. A post race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Jockey M. Rodd was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on six occasions prior to the 100m.
 
ENUFF STOP IT – Raced wide throughout.
 
 
Race 3: SKY RACING BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP   1110 Metres
 
BETTER BE NORDY – A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be stepping short in the near hind leg with a minor abrasion to the stifle area. Trainer Mr R. Heathcote advised Stewards that he will have his stable veterinarian examine the gelding and will report back on its post race condition.  
 
ISLAND MAGIC – Slow to begin. When asked to comment on the performance, rider R. Maloney commented that the mare was somewhat fractious as the start was effected and that ISLAND MAGIC was somewhat off balance hence losing ground at the start and settling further back than anticipated. He further added that the mare finished the race off well.   
 
THE LIONS' GATE – When asked to comment on the performance, rider B. Loy advised that the gelding over raced when leading which he attributed to the application of blinkers for the first time and he felt this resulted in the horse not finishing off as well as expected. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.  
 
 
Race 4: CASCADE CLASS 6 HANDICAP  1350 Metres
 
Following the running of race 3, the track was upgraded to a Soft (6).
 
SOLAR APEX – Began awkwardly.
 
REGAL POM – Laid in and away from HOLLYWOOD NORTH approaching the 200m.
 
BUTCH'N'BUGS – Held up for clear running on entering the home straight. Approaching the 300m became awkward on heels before shifting out approaching the 250m in an attempt to secure a run between FIVE OXFORD and REGAL POM, however was disappointed and had to be steadied at the 200m when FIVE OXFORD shifted out slightly and REGAL POM shifted in and away from HOLLYWOOD NORTH. Approaching the 100m, in an attempt to secure clear running was directed inwards and was then steadied at the winning post when crowded for room to the inside of INDIFFERENCE. Stewards opened an inquiry into the tactics adopted by jockey S. Galloway, particularly the tactics adopted in the home straight. After taking initial evidence, Stewards adjourned the matter to a date and time to be fixed.  A post race veterinary examination of BUTCH’N’BUGS revealed no abnormalities.
 
 
Race 5: DOUBTLAND 1ST YEARLINGS ON OFFER @ WIDDEN QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE  1350 Metres
 
BLOOD RED – Slow to begin.
 
IRISH ACCOLADE – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped KING TARIK.  
 
EXSIDEE – Bumped on jumping. Raced wide throughout. Raced greenly under pressure in the home straight.
 
KING TARIK – Bumped heavily at the start and lost ground. Inconvenienced approaching the 1200m by the riderless horse.
 
SCOTTISH LAIRD – Raced wide throughout. Obliged to alter course approaching the 100m after becoming awkward at the heels of EXSIDEE which shifted out when racing greenly.
 
ZINOTAR (NZ) – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped heavily with EXSIDEE, causing rider R. Maloney to be dislodged. A post race veterinary examination of ZINOTAR revealed no abnormalities. Jockey Maloney was cleared by the club Doctor to fulfil his remaining engagements.
 
PARCHEMIN – Began awkwardly and bumped LOST MY NIGHTIE. Inconvenienced for some distance leaving the 1200m by the riderless horse. Raced greenly under pressure leaving the 300m.
 
LOST MY NIGHTIE – Bumped on jumping. Improved onto heels and shifted wider leaving the 700m.
 
SHARP DAZZLER – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn and was then disappointed for a room approaching the 200m and had to be steadied.
 
 
Race 6: XXXX GOLD BENCHMARK 72 HANDICAP 1200 Metres
 
I PROMISE YOU – Began awkwardly.
 
MAXCALEMMA – Raced wide throughout. Eased down over the final 200m due to rider having concerns with the gelding’s action. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying symptoms of mild heat stress. Stewards will follow up with Mr Vandyke on the post race condition of the gelding.
 
MAJORELLE – Over raced during the early stages and improved onto heels at the 800m and had to be steadied. Raced three wide with cover the majority.
 
BURNING BELL – Began awkwardly. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn. Leaving the 200m, disappointed for a run and had to be momentarily eased. Jockey A. Mallyon reported that the mare raced flat and had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure in the home straight. Underwent a post race veterinary examination which revealed the mare to be displaying clinical signs of heat stress. Stewards will follow up with the stable on the post race condition of the mare.  
 
 
Race 7: LADBROKES SAME RACE MULTI CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1640 Metres
 
DARK CHILL – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
 
TAUPO TIGER – Hampered and taken wider rounding the home turn when VANCITY shifted out to improve. Jockey R. Dolan reported that the gelding was disappointing and also that it had a tendency to lay out when placed under pressure and failed to run on as expected. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
VICTORIA ROC (NZ) – Shifted in abruptly on jumping and bumped AMISFIELD. Laid in leaving the 600m before being corrected by its rider. Raced wide throughout.
 
FREE CARRY – Began awkwardly and bumped POWER GLIDER.
 
SO YOU KNEW – Momentarily raced in restricted room leaving the 600m.
 
FRENCH STEP – Raced wide until the 900m.  
 
AMISFIELD – Hampered shortly after the start and became awkward at heels of VICTORIA ROC when that runner shifted in abruptly. Approaching the 1400m had to be steadied when tightened for room to the inside of DARK CHILL when that runner was carried in by FRENCH STEP. Jockey J. Huxtable, rider of FRENCH STEP, was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) for not allowing sufficient racing room to runners to his inside when shifting ground.
 
POWER GLIDER – Bumped heavily at the start with rider G. Cartwright becoming momentarily unbalanced and consequently lost ground.  
 
VANCITY – Slow to begin. Jockey W. D’Avila was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on six occasions prior to the 100m.
