GENERAL
As Jockey P. Hammersley and J. Huxtable were not riding at today’s meeting due to being indisposed, rider changes were made as per the Race Day Summary.
Race 1: GIRLS DAY OUT ON SALE NOW QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE 1110M
The start of this event was delayed after MISHANI I AM reared up in the barrier and became momentarily cast. MISHANI I AM was removed and underwent a veterinary examination and was subsequently declared a late scratching at 1:41pm on veterinary advice. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards declared all successful bets placed on MISHANI I AM to be refunded with the following deductions to apply.
1st – 0c the win, 2c the place.
2nd – 6c the place.
3rd – 1c the place.
Trainer L. Ross was advised MISHANI I AM would require a barrier certificate prior to resuming.
DUE CALZINI – Began awkwardly and bumped shortly after. Raced wide for majority of the event. Jockey B. Thompson reported at scale that after beginning only fairly and being bumped by another runner, he settled further back than anticipated. He further added that the gelding raced greenly throughout, however, finished the race off fairly and would derive benefit from the race day experience. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying mild clinical signs of the thumps.
TIGER TIE – Began awkwardly.
LADY BOSSA NOVA – Shifted out under pressure over the final 100m.
MISHY – Began awkwardly. Raced greenly in the early stages. Leaving the 50m shifted out and away from LADY BOSSA NOVA.
SHINING SPIRIT – Raced greenly and had a tendency to lay in during various stages of the event.
SWEET CANDY – Began awkwardly and shifted in, bumping with DUE CALZINI. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
Race 2: BECOME A BRC MEMBER COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200M
BOOM COURT – Jockey R. Wiggins reported at scale that his mount failed to quicken when asked for an effort in the home straight, he also added that in his opinion the gelding may not have appreciated today’s track conditions. Trainer S. Kendrick concurred with the comments of R. Wiggins and that he would monitor the gelding’s recovery and would advise Stewards of anything that may come to light.
ALAKAI SWAMP – Reared at the start and lost ground. Raced keenly in the early stages. Momentarily had difficulty obtaining clear running leaving the 300m.
DARK TANGENT – Slow to begin. Held up approaching the home turn. Jockey M. Harley reported at scale that the gelding failed to quicken when asked for an effort in the home straight and proved disappointing in its finished effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
FIERY RING – Shifted its near hind plate and had to be re-fitted prior to entering the mounting yard. Underwent a veterinary examination and was subsequently cleared to start. Blundered after the start. Raced keenly in the early stages when being restrained to position with cover approaching the 900m.
ONE IN ALL – Raced keenly in the early stages.
Race 3: SKY RACING FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200M
PETERSHAM – Slow to begin. J. Orman advised Stewards that after beginning awkwardly, he was unable to secure a more forward position and rather than being caught 3 wide, he elected to take a position behind DUCHESS BREE in the early stages. He further added that PETERSHAM finished the race off well and would also appreciate a step up in distance.
GLEEFILLY – Over raced in the early stages and improved onto heels approaching the 800m.
FIRE LOVE – Raced wide for the majority. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have a slow post-race recovery.
MARLEEDOONE – Slow into stride.
SHOT OUT – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
CLASSIQUE GAL – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
DUCHESS BREE – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was subsequently cleared to start. Began awkwardly. Held up during the early stages of the home straight.
Race 4:CASCADE MAIDEN PLATE 1350M
SIR LEONIDAS – Trainer W. Hulbert advised Stewards a change of tactics and SIR LEONIDAS would be ridden further forward if circumstances permit. Began awkwardly. Approaching the 1200m, improved to the inside of GURU CLASS and became awkward at that runners’ heels, shifting in and bumping with VOCALS for a short distance. Continued to over race for the remainder of the event. Approaching the 700m when the pace of the race steadied, had to be eased from the heels of DEEP DAWN for a number of strides. Laid in under pressure in the early stages of the home straight.
CAPTAIN FENKEL – Held up approaching and rounding the home turn.
MERCHANT FLYER – Shifted out at the start and bumped with MISS FARSTAR. Raced wide throughout.
FIDDLER ONTHE ROOF – At the 1100m, had to be momentarily steadied after becoming awkward at the heels of VOCALS when that runner was taken inwards by SIR LEONIDAS.
GURU CLASS – Jockey C. Bayliss was reprimanded pursuant to AR128(2) for leaving the racecourse without seeking approval from Stewards.
VOCALS – Approaching the 1200m, bumped and taken inwards by SIR LEONIDAS when that runner improved to the inside of GURU CLASS. A short distance later had to be steadied from the heels of SIR LEONIDAS when that runner, whilst over racing, continued to shift in when awkwardly placed at the heels of GURU CLASS. Jockey C. Bayliss, rider of GURU CLASS was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding. Approaching the 100m, whilst weakening was momentarily steadied.
HATASU – Approaching the 800m, improved onto the heels of COSMIC IMAGE and had to be steadied for a number of strides.
MISS FARSTAR – Shifted in at the start and bumped with MERCHANT FLYER. Obliged to alter course approaching the 250m.
COSMIC IMAGE – Raced keenly leaving the 800m.
Race 5: RUSSIAN CAMELOT 1ST YEARLINGS ON OFFER @WIDDEN MAIDEN PLATE 1650M
AMERICAN PHIREBALL – Slow to begin. Held up approaching the home turn and was then checked from the heels of WINUSA STAR. Had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure in the home straight.
ELROY – Held up rounding the home turn. Disappointed for a run approaching the 200m and was obliged to steady and shift outwards to secure clear running.
HEREDITARY (NZ) – Shortly after the start was bumped by PICADOR and became unbalanced and lost ground. Held up rounding the home turn.
IL TORO D'ORO – Raced in restricted room approaching the 1400m. Leaving the 600m, raced in restricted room to the inside of PRIDE AN’ JOY.
ITALIAN AWARD – Shifted out on jumping and bumped with AUTMN SONG. Shifted out under pressure approaching the 200m.
PICADOR – Shortly after the start, bumped with HEREDITARY. Laid in approaching the 1400m. Raced greenly in the home straight when placed under pressure. Cast its off-hind plate in running.
AUTUMN SONG – Bumped on jumping. Jockey J. Orman reported that he was of the opinion the gelding may not have appreciated today’s track condition but would derive benefit from the run. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
SHARMAN PETE – Began awkwardly.
GRANDCOEUR – Trainer P. Duncan was fined $100 pursuant to LR67(1) for failing to declare a rider within the prescribed time. Raced in restricted room approaching the 1400m. Held up rounding the home turn up until a point approaching the 200m.
PEONY SURPRISE – Began awkwardly. Rider R. Maloney advised that from a wide draw he had to make use of the mare to secure a position closer to the rail. He further added that the mare had a tendency to over race when leading which he attributed to PEONY SURPRISE having not started since the 1st of December 2023 and for this reason, he felt the mare failed to finish off the event as anticipated. Trainer C. Meagher concurred with the comments of R. Maloney and advised Stewards he would monitor the mare’s recovery and would advise Stewards of anything that may come to light. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
PRIDE AN' JOY – Raced wide throughout.
WINUSA STAR – Rounding the home turn, had to be directed away from the heels of PICADOR which shifted out under riding and as a result became severely unbalanced and lost ground. At a subsequent inquiry Apprentice J. Molloy as the rider of PICADOR was found guilty of careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) in that when riding his mount along and placing it under pressure rounding the home turn, he made insufficient effort to prevent his horse from shifting outwards which resulted in PICADOR shifting into the rightful racing line of WINUSA STAR, causing that rider to become severely unbalanced after being steadied to avoid PICADOR’S heels. As a consequence, AMERICAN PHIREBALL which was awkwardly placed behind WINUSA STAR, was also checked as a result of this incident. Apprentice J. Molloy’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 9 days commencing midnight the 24th of January up to and including midnight the 2nd of February. Apprentice Molloy was advised of his rights to appeal.
Race 6: XXXX GOLD BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP 1650M
PATMOS ISLAND – Apprentice M. Castle was fined $300 pursuant to AR 132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip 6 times prior to the 100m, one more than permitted.
TUHINGA – Raced wide early until leaving the 1200m.
SEMAPHORE GIRL – Slow to begin.
DIACO – Laid in under pressure from the 150m. Jockey B. Thompson reported that in his opinion the gelding may not have appreciated today’s racing conditions.
FLYING ROTHE – Trainer R. Heathcote advised Stewards he was somewhat disappointed with today’s performance and the stable would be reviewing the horse’s preparation.
JUBAI PRIDE – Began awkwardly.
LEITZEL – Had to have its crossover-nose band readjusted after being loaded in the barriers. Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced fiercely in the early and middle stages and proved difficult to settle. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with the Waller stable regarding the filly’s performance.
TOOLATEMATE – Raced wide until approaching the 1000m. Approaching the 200m, was obliged to shift outwards to secure clear running and had a tendency to lay in.
Race 7: LADBROKES HUB BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1350M
BANDIT – Raced wide throughout.
GRANITE PRINCE – Raced keenly in the early stages. When asked to comment on the gelding’s form improvement, trainer M. Nolan stated that the gelding was second up today from it’s most recent start at Ipswich 6/1/2024. Mr Nolan noted that on that occasion, GRANITE PRINCE did not have a lot of luck approaching the home turn and as it was first up, it would derive natural improvement from the run. Mr Nolan also added that GRANITE PRINCE was better suited over today’s distance and on a more favourable racing surface he did expect improvement. Stewards noted his comments.
TARPS – Began awkwardly. Over raced in the middle stages.
DESTINY'S REPUBLIC – Trainer B. Gentle was fined $100 pursuant to LR67(1) for failing to declare a rider within the prescribed time.
WHISTLING SPIRIT – Began awkwardly. Over raced in the middle stages.
O'MISS BEHAVING – Began awkwardly, shifted in, and bumped DEEP CLEAN. Jockey J. Orman advised Stewards he was obliged to race further back than he anticipated. Furthermore, when attempting to secure clear running approaching the 200m he was obliged to shift inwards into clear running and finished the race off well.
REEANON – Slow to begin and was bumped shortly after.
DEEP CLEAN – Began awkwardly and was bumped shortly after. Over raced in the middle stages. Bumped on the hind quarters leaving the 250m by O’MISS BEHAVING. Rider B. Thompson could offer no explanation for the mare’s disappointing performance. Trainer M. Hoysted advised Stewards they would give consideration to dropping the mare back in distance at its next start. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
Race 8: GALLOPERS SPORTS CLUB BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 2050M
The start of this event was delayed owing to the late arrival of the field at the start and the barriers having to be positioned.
UNCOMMON VALOUR – Approaching the 500m, had to be steadied from the heels of KNEZE when attempting to improve.
DEMARCAY (GB) – Trainer C. Waller advised Stewards a change of tactics and from a better barrier today, DEMARCAY would attempt to settle further forward. Ridden accordingly.
KNEZE – Leaving the 600m, was awkwardly placed and carried wider from the heels of KINGSTAR BULLET.
VAN GOGH – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped SHEZADANDI.
FOXY FRAULIEN – Laid in approaching the 1400m. Raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in its off-hind leg. Trainer R. Singleton was advised FOXY FRAULIEN would require a veterinary clearance prior to resuming.
GOOGAZ – Raced wide throughout.
SHEZADANDI – Began awkwardly and was bumped after the start. Laid in under pressure leaving the 300m before being corrected by its rider.
ARTFUL GIRL – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Held up rounding the home turn.
STAR SEEKER – Began awkwardly and shifted out on jumping into the line of KINGSTAR BULLET.
NIPPA'S NIGHTCAP – Laid in approaching the 800m. Raced wide for the majority. Laid in under pressure leaving the 100m resulting in the rider having to stop and straighten.
KINGSTAR BULLET – Tightened for room on jumping and contacted the heels of STAR SEEKER and blundered.
