Bruce. Apprentice C. Collis when questioned if there was an opportunity to shift wider and trail YES TO EXCESS forward leaving the 700m, he explained that in his opinion the gelding may have not have finished the race off if he elected to do so at that point. Apprentice C. Collis further explained that in approaching the home turn, he was attempting to trail DWINDLING SPIRIT into the race however, when it failed to quicken as anticipated, he then elected to shift very wide on the course to secure clear running. When asked to comment regarding his vigour on the gelding approximately 60m from the finishing line, Apprentice C. Collis stated he had misjudged where the finishing line was and his vision was slightly obscured by the afternoon sun. Stewards when assessing Apprentice C. Collis ride in its entirety, feel that he made an error in judgment by not electing to ease wider approaching the home turn which would have afforded him an uninterrupted run to the finish. Stewards noted Apprentice C. Collis’s error in misjudging the finishing line was due to his inexperience however there is an expectation and requirement of riders to ensure their mounts are fully tested in order to finish in their best possible position.
