SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
Doomben 3/8/2024
Race 5 – Stable representative for R. Heathcote advised that whilst they were satisfied in the manner in which POUTCHEK had pulled up post-race, it is now their intention to send the mare for a spell.
 
GENERAL
Stewards permitted the following overweight
Race 8 – M. Rodd +0.5kg
 
Race 6 – YANGARI was declared a late scratching at 11:13am. Trainer R. Heathcote was subsequently fined $200 pursuant to LR 68(1) for failing to scratch within the prescribed time.   
 
Race 1: HENDRA STATE SCHOOL 160TH ANNIVERSARY QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE 1350 M
 
ENTERPRISE VALOUR – Near the 700m was momentarily taken wider when FRATIANNO shifted out to improve. Raced greenly for a short distance thereafter when being restrained.
 
EXPLOSIVE TYCOON – Raced wide early. Leaving the 300m when commencing to weaken, was momentarily brushed by PRIDE OF SAVABELLA which shifted out to improve. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey J. Orman stated that in his opinion the gelding had to work excessively in the early stages of the event which in his opinion had a detrimental effect on its finishing effort.
 
SAMURAI WAND – Began awkwardly.
 
THE DARK SIDE – Bumped on jumping and shortly thereafter steadied from heels and lost ground. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey J. Stanley stated that after being hampered shortly after the start he was obliged to settle further back than anticipated. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a minor laceration to its near foreleg.
 
WHATABOOM – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped UMABETT before shifting out and bumping with THE DARK SIDE.
 
LADY BOSSA NOVA – Began awkwardly.
 
TESSATORI – Began awkwardly, bumped on jumping and became unbalanced. Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
UMABETT – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped with WHATABOOM shortly after the start. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor stated that in his opinion the filly may be better suited to a distance shorter than 1350m.
 
Race 2: BECOME A BRC MEMBER MAIDEN PLATE 1350 M
 
BIG DEMEANOR – Began awkwardly. Raced wide throughout.
 
CASANOVA MAN (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Leaving the 100m, became awkwardly placed at the heels of QUEEN OF DARK and was obliged to shift outwards. When questioned regarding his riding over the final 100m, Jockey D. Smith advised that he improved into a position behind QUEEN OF DARK nearing the 100m and he was mindful that when he shifted to the outside of that runners heels, due to QUEEN OF THE DARK racing wayward he was cautious about placing his mount under further riding. He further added that shortly passing the winning post, QUEEN OF DARK was wayward again resulting in him becoming awkward and having to restrain away from that runner’s heels. Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by D. Smith however reminded him that he should make every effort to fully test his mount to the finish.
 
CRUSADER RAZOR – Bumped and hampered on jumping. Leaving the 900m momentarily shifted out and raced in restricted room for a number of strides.  When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey M. Rodd reported the gelding raced ungenerously at various stages of the event and recommended to connections to experiment with some possible gear adjustments.
 
NO BRAKES – Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey J. Orman reported that he was disappointed with the gelding’s performance, however, did note that in his opinion the gelding may appreciate a step up in distance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
PAPAL WARS (NZ) – Raced wide throughout
 
STEALING SOULS – Approaching the winning post had to be steadied after improving onto the heels of the tiring STEEL KING which shifted in. Jockey C. Graham was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) and was advised to exercise greater care when her mount is shifting ground. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor stated in his opinion the gelding would appreciate a step up in distance.
 
STEEL KING (NZ) – Began awkwardly. When questioned regarding today’s performance, Jockey C. Graham stated that the gelding over raced when leading and in her opinion, this had a detrimental effect on its finishing effort. She was also of the opinion her mount would be better suited to a shorter distance. Trainer B. Lockwood concurred with C. Graham’s comments and advised that he may elect to drop the gelding back in distance.
 
AUTORA – Bumped on jumping and became unbalanced.
 
FREE AS THE WIND – Began awkwardly.
 
ISLE ORNSAY – Held up rounding the home turn.
 
ON THE VEUVE – Leaving the 300m was obliged to alter course to secure clear running, was then held up until approaching the 200m.
 
QUEEN OF DARK – Restrained from a wide barrier to a rearward position. Near the 1100m improved onto heels and was steadied. Approaching the 700m improved onto heels and had to be steadied. Held up rounding the home turn. Approaching the 50m, laid in and became awkwardly placed at the heels of BIG DEMEANOR and was unable to be fully tested to the finishing line.
 
MADAM BORODINA – Began awkwardly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have suffered a minor laceration to its off foreleg.  
 
Race 3: MEKKA RACEDAY 17 AUGUST BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1110 M
 
XERRI – Began awkwardly and shifted out.  Near the 1000m, shifted in and away from BULSARA.
 
BULSARA – Bumped on jumping.
 
DIRT CHEAP – Near the 1000m, raced in restricted room to the inside of XERRI which shifted in and away from BULSARA. Apprentice E. Lang was advised to greater care when crossing. Held up rounding the home turn until leaving the 300m. Jockey J. Orman reported it was his intention to try hold a leading position but after being crowded for room in the early stages he was obliged to steady to allow outside runners to cross.
 
VELOCE METEOR – Raced awkwardly at heels from a point leaving the 700m until approaching the 500m.
 
FIELD OF MYRTLE – Approaching the 1000m, when awkwardly placed to the inside of DIRT CHEAP, had to be steadied and lost ground shortly thereafter when DIRT CHEAP was taken in by XERRI which shifted in and away from BULSARA. Near the 700m became awkwardly placed at heels when the pace of the race slackened and was obliged to shift out.
 
FIRST PERSON – Near the 800m, commenced to race keenly and was steadied from heels, shifted out and raced wide for the remainder. Bumped near the 600m when VELOCE METEOR shifted out momentarily. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
Race 4: EUREKA STUD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1640 M
 
The start of this event was delayed owing to IT’SALLSAIDANDONE being presented without earmuffs which was part of it’s advertised gear. Trainer L. Mayfield-Smith was reprimanded pursuant to AR 106(2) for presenting his runner with the incorrect gear.
 
RESURRECTED – Raced keenly in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
BENZINO – Near the 1300m, improved onto heels and shifted out before restraining to find cover. Shifted out approaching the 250m and bumped TARANAKI. Shifted out under pressure over the final 150m.
 
GENZEE (NZ) – Slow to begin and then hampered shortly after.
 
SHABOOH SHALAA – Raced wide until the 1000m.
 
TARANAKI (NZ) – Hampered shortly after the start. Near the 1300m, obliged to steady from heels when racing in restricted room. Approaching the 250m was bumped by BENZINO which shifted out to improve.
 
MIDORI MOVER – Slow to begin.
 
BELMONT PARK – Near 1350m when over racing, shifted in and bumped TARANAKI. Continued to over race and raced wide for the remainder. Taken wider near the 900m when DON’T TELL PEGGY (NZ) laid out. Near the 800m, bumped with IT’SALLSAIDANDONE and became unbalanced.
 
DON'T TELL PEGGY (NZ) – Began awkwardly and shifted out.  Approaching the 1350m commenced to over race when being restrained in an attempt to find cover. Leaving the 1000m, commenced to over race and brushed with BELMONT PARK for a number of strides. Approaching the 900m, shifted out and again contacted BELMONT PARK when over racing. Raced three wide from that point onwards.  
 
SHY REBEL – Trainer D. Vandyke advised a change of tactics and SHY REBEL would attempt to be ridden further forward if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly. Jockey M. Rodd reported that the mare raced keenly when racing in a forward position.
 
IL TORO D'ORO – Slow to begin. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey T. Marshall stated that the gelding was under pressure for the majority of the race, however could offer no other explanation for today’s performance.
 
IT'SALLSAIDANDONE – Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 1400m, commenced to race ungenerously and proved difficult to settle. Approaching the 1300m, whilst over racing, shifted out abruptly forcing BENZINO wider, continued to race ungenerously and proved difficult to settle when racing wide for the remainder of the event. Near the 900m was forced wider when BELMONT PARK was carried out by DON’T TELL PEGGY. Shortly thereafter, shifted in and bumped with BELMONT PARK and became unbalanced.
 
Race 5: THE GIBSON BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1640 M
 
NO GOING BACK – Raced keenly when restraining for cover near the 1400m. Raced keenly near the 1000m when the pace of the race steadied.
 
TAMBOURINE MAN – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Approaching the 1000m commenced to over race when the pace of the race steadied and shifted wider. Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight, obliging its rider to stop and correct her mount near the 100m.
 
KIND WISH (NZ) – Leaving the 1000m when the pace of the race slackened, Apprentice B. Wheeler elected to shift three wide and allowed his mount to stride forward and find a position outside the leader near the 800m.
 
CAPE CRUSADER – Slow to begin. Shifted in under pressure approaching the winning post, obliging its rider to stop and straighten the gelding.
 
FREE CARRY – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
SLY CORNER (NZ) – Raced wide until finding a position outside the leader near the 1000m.  
 
PICKAXE – Near the 600m was held up behind the weakening SLY CORNER and lost ground. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Apprentice C. Collis reported he was unable to improve when approaching the 600m when he was caught behind the tiring SLY CORNER. He further added PICKAXE was one paced in its finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
BIG TICKET BOY – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Approaching the 900m had to be momentarily steadied when the pace of the race was only steady.
 
Race 6: EVA AIR BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP 2040 M
 
FERNAO (IRE) – Slow to begin. Approaching the 1900m raced in restricted room. Apprentice B. Wheeler reported his mount was one paced in its finishing effort.
 
SECURITY ADVISOR – Slow to begin and hampered shortly after.
 
HURACANEVO – Raced keenly in the early stages when being restrained to obtain cover. Inclined to lay in for the majority of the event.
 
SNATCH (NZ) – Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the early stages. Approaching the 500m, was bumped when racing in restricted room to the inside of HURACANEVO which was laying in. Trainer D. Forester stated in her opinion the gelding over raced, she may consider some gear changes, however it was her intention to continue with its preparation and if anything was to come to light regarding today’s performance in the coming days, she would report back to Stewards. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery.
 
FARWEST – Approaching the 1900m had to be momentarily steadied whilst racing in restricted room. Held up when awkwardly placed between runners leaving the 600m. When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding, Jockey A. Jones advised that when the pace increased at the 800m, FARWEST was left flat footed. She further added that approaching the 600m, she was awkwardly placed on the heels of the tiring SNATCH (NZ) and when asked for an effort shortly after, the gelding was only one paced, however finished off fairly over the final 150m. She further added that approaching the winning post she was mindful of movement of inside and outside runners, as well as her mount having a tendency to lay in, and due to these reasons, she did not ride her horse out with full vigour. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
SIENNA'S AWARD – Began awkwardly and shifted out.
 
Race 7: U&U RECRUITMENT CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200 M
 
BEAUTANTES – Raced wide throughout.
 
CALIFORNIAN – Commenced to race keenly approaching the 900m and had to be steadied.
 
DANCE WIZZARD – Began very awkwardly. Raced wide throughout. Had a tendency to lay out during the middle stages of the event. Shifted wider approaching the home turn. Trainer T. Gollan advised that the gelding was only having its second start and raced very greenly. He further added that he would report back in the following days regarding the gelding’s condition.
 
MYSTIC MAC – Held up rounding the home turn. Approaching the 200m, after improving into a narrow run to the inside of ANTONITO (NZ) raced in restricted room until approaching the 100m. Approaching the 50m, shifted out marginally under pressure and bumped with ANTONITO (NZ) which laid in under pressure.
 
VOLCANIC LOVE – Slow to begin.
 
ANTONITO (NZ) – Approaching the 50m, shifted in and bumped with MYSTIC MAC.
 
LUMENS LENNY – Jockey J. Orman reported that the gelding appeared to lose focus in the home straight and was disappointed in the way it finished off the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery.
 
GURU CLASS – Laid in under pressure approaching the 100m before being corrected by its rider.
 
DUCHESS BREE – Had difficulty obtaining clear running between the 200m and 100m.
 
Race 8:LADBROKES YARD COMMENTS CLASS 5 HANDICAP 1350 M
 
LUBRICATION – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
 
TONY BE – Improved onto heels near the 100m and had to be steadied and went to the line without being fully tested by its rider.
 
ZUMA CALIFORNIA – Jockey A. Jones was reminded of her obligation to ensure she rides her mount out to the end of the race.
 
SHA OF GOMER – Raced keenly approaching the 1100m when being restrained to a position with cover. Held up rounding the home turn before being awkwardly placed at heels.
 
MAID TO FIT – Raced keenly in the middle stages. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey J. Orman stated that his mount raced flat and proved disappointing. Trainer K. Schweida advised it was now his intention to send the mare for a spell.
 
COLLEAGUES (NZ) – Bumped with FLEUR DE MONDE approaching the 600m.
 
DWINDLING SPIRIT – Raced keenly during the early and middle stages. Improved onto heels near the 500m. Laid out when placed under pressure approaching the 200m.
 
FLEUR DU MONDE – Began awkwardly and was bumped shortly after by BECAMO. Bumped with COLLEAGUES (NZ) approaching the 600m.
 
BECAMO – Began awkwardly and bumped with FLEUR DE MONDE. Over raced in the middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery. Trainer S. Dwyer advised it was now his intention to send the gelding for a spell.
