SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
From Sunshine Coast 21/8/2024 – Race 3
Jockey R. Maloney rider of BUFFET was charged and pleaded guilty to careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) in that near the 400m he directed his mount out in order to secure clear running when not clear of QUEEN OF DARK causing that horse to be checked and lose ground. Jockey R. Maloney’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 12 days, commencing midnight 24/8/2024 up to and including midnight 5/9/2024.

POPE CODY – Began awkwardly and lost ground. On entering the home straight became awkwardly placed at the heels of SHEZA CHIQUITITA when attempting to improve, when unable to do so shifted back in and continued to lay in under pressure. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey J. Orman stated that after beginning awkwardly, he was `obliged to race further back than anticipated and he felt as though the colt was doing its best work over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

Castle in the presence of her master C. Meagher stated that she was instructed to settle in a prominent position and after beginning fairly, was obliged to urge her mount in the early stages to cross and obtain a position to the outside of FREE CARRY. She added that she was unaware of the fast early tempo and that both her mount and FREE CARRY had established a significant gap to the remainder of the field. Apprentice M. Castle also added that she had been mindful of TAMBOURINE MAN’s last start when FREE CARRY was permitted to lead without being challenged, so rode her mount to maintain a position at the flank of FREE CARRY for an extended period. Apprentice M. Castle added that she commenced to place her mount under pressure passing the 800m and on entering the home straight, her mount commenced to weaken. Apprentice M. Castle accepted that in hindsight, she should have made an effort to restrain TAMBOURINE MAN in the early stages rather than pressure the gelding over a significant distance. Stewards were of the opinion that Apprentice M. Castle erred in riding her mount to maintain a position outside of the lead and should have restrained to take up a position behind FREE CARRY. In considering the matter, Stewards did not believe Apprentice M. Castle’s ride was culpable but was below the acceptable standard of a Metropolitan Apprentice and under AR144(2) advised Apprentice M. Castle must attend the Riders Skills Panel for remedial and technical assistance.
