GENERAL
Trainer M Brosnan was fined $200 under LR67(1) for the late declaration of A Thompson as the rider of SARSEN in Race 5.
 
 
Race 1: SPRING CARNIVAL BOOK NOW QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP  1350 M
 
ESTRONDO – Raced keenly in the early stages. Inconvenienced and bumped rounding the home turn when THE TORQUE FACTOR was taken out by HERBIE TOWN (G Cartwright) which shifted out to improve. G Cartwright was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. When asked to comment on tactics adopted rider B Wheeler stated with the step up in distance from 1000m to 1350m, instructions were to ride the gelding with cover, however from the wide barrier draw and with the slow early tempo ESTRONDO settled further back in the field than anticipated.
 
HERBIE TOWN – Slow to begin.
 
RAMP IT UP – Bumped at the start and taken in. Raced keenly in the early stages. Leaving the 100m obliged to shift in to secure clear running.
 
THE TORQUE FACTOR – After being slow to begin was then bumped by RAMP IT UP and lost ground. Rounding the home turn forced wider and bumped ESTRONDO.
 
MARAGICAL – Jumped in abruptly at the start and bumped RAMP IT UP.
 
 
 
Race 2: THE GIBSON MAIDEN PLATE  1640 M
 
The start of this event was delayed approximately 2 minutes when a number of runners were slow to arrive at the barriers and OUT OF ACES was required to undergo a veterinarian examination.
 
AMADOR – Began awkwardly.
OUT OF ACES – After contacting the enclosure gate moving onto the track underwent a veterinarian examination on arrival at the barriers and was cleared to start. Began awkwardly. Rider C Collis reported the saddle on the gelding shifted back shortly after the start.
 
EFFIE'S JOY – Leaving the 1500m momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of OUT OF ACES (C Collis) which shifted in. C Collis was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. After being crossed by AIKAU near the 1400m and when the pace of the race eased, had to be restrained from heels. DULVERTO CHARM, which was following was as a result forced wider on the track as a consequence. Inclined to over-race for some distance thereafter.
 
SUSPICIOUS AL – From the wide barrier restrained shortly after the start to a rearward position closer to rails.
 
 
Race 3: RACECOURSE VILLAGE MAIDEN HANDICAP  1200 M
 
BIG DEMEANOR – Jumped in at the start and bumped KAMARIYA.
 
DUKE OF LANCASTER - From the wide barrier restrained shortly after the start to a rearward position closer to rails. Rider A Donald reported the gelding felt awkward in its action at the completion of the event.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying symptoms of the thumps and lameness in the near foreleg. Trainer A Robinson was advised DUKE OF LANCASTER would require a veterinary clearance prior to its next race start.
 
ELROY – Approaching the 200m shifted out under pressure before being corrected.
 
DESERT COUGAR – Laid out under pressure in the home straight. Rider S Cormack reported the mare travelled comfortably during the race however when placed under pressure in the home straight was disappointing and laid out.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality. Co-Trainers Edmonds and McLean were advised a warning would be placed on the racing manners of DESERT COUGAR.
 
KAMARIYA – Bumped at the start. Laid in for a short distance leaving the 900m when over-racing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed minor upper respiratory noise. A subsequent scope of the mare on return to the stables revealed mucus in the airways and treated accordingly. Stable representative for trainer R Heathcote was advised KAMARIYA would require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
 
OUR BENEFACTOR – Slow to begin. Inclined to lay in in the home straight. Rider M Harley was reprimanded under AR132(6)(b) for raising his whip arm above shoulder height.
 
TOP ACT – In light of today’s performance Trainer M Dunn reported it would now be his intention to add blinkers to mare.
 
 
Race 4: SKY RACING CLASS 3 HANDICAP  2040 M
 
HILLCREST AVENUE – Approaching the 150m bumped and became unbalanced when PORT MOURANT shifted in and away from HELL FOLLOWS which was inclined to lay in.Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
SHY GUY – Held up for clear running between the 500m until a point near the 250m. Improved onto heels and was steadied near the 150m before being disappointed for a run near the 50m and went to the line unable to be fully tested by its rider. When asked to comment on the performance of the gelding rider J. Orman stated the gelding was first up today after a four-week break and instructions were to ride the horse midfield with cover. He added he was reluctant to pressure the horse near the 1200m to take the field up to the two leaders as he was mindful of the instructions issued, and also felt it would have been detrimental to the finishing effort to pressure SHY GUY at that point of the race. He further stated he did not expect SIR LEONIDAS, who had improved to his outside near the 1200m, to then shift down to the rail forward of him near the 1000m. Stewards noted the explanation of J Orman. Lost off fore plate in running. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.
 
SIR LEONIDAS – Began awkwardly and lost ground.Raced keenly in the early stages and as a result near the 1500m left a rearward trailing position and progressed forward to race in a forward position with cover near the 1200m. Steadied near the 250m when awkwardly placed at the heels of SON OF SATONO (N Beriman) which shifted out under pressure. N Beriman was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.
 
JUMEIRAH TRIANGLE – When racing tightly to the inside of GODRA approaching the winning post on the first occasion, shifted in marginally, brushed the running rail, became unbalanced and lost ground.
 
PORT MOURANT – Began awkwardly and shifted out bumping HELL FOLLOWS. Approaching the 150m shifted in bumping with HILLCREST AVENUE and became unbalanced.
 
HELL FOLLOWS – After being slow to begin was then bumped by PORT MOURANT. Laid in for a short distance passing the 200m.
 
 
Race 5: EUREKA STUD BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP  1640 M
 
PENTITO – Raced keenly for the majority of the event.Held up for clear running rounding the home turn.Approaching the 300m disappointed for a run to the inside of WOWIT’S WILLYWONKA. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages and brushed the running rail approaching the winning post.
 
ULTIMATE OUTCOME – Slow to begin.
 
BITOFTHEBLARNEY – Near then 1500m bumped heavily and taken in by SARSEN (A Thompson) which shifted in at an acute angle. A Thompson was severely reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident. Rider J Orman reported he was somewhat disappointed in the horse’s finishing effort and was of the opinion that after becoming unbalanced near the 1500m, this may have had some effect on the overall performance of BITOFTHEBLARNEY.
 
TOROVISTA – Began awkwardly and shifted out at the start.
 
MOOTESSA – Rider N Beriman reported after beginning awkwardly the mare settled further back in the field than anticipated.
 
 
Race 6: XXXX GOLD CLASS 4 PLATE  1350 M
 
BASARWA – Lost the off-hind plate in running.
 
BULLION BOY – Approaching the 300m disappointed for a run to the inside of SUBSTANTIAL which shifted in. Held up for a short distance near the 100m.
 
SUBSTANTIAL – Crowded on jumping between SUBSTANTIAL which jumped out and NAVAL TRADER which jumped in. Laid out rounding the home turn.
 
KADALL – Jumped out at the start. Raced keenly in the middle stages.
 
NAVAL TRADER – Jumped in at the start. Leaving the 500m bumped, became unbalanced and taken wider when RAINBOW CONNECTION (J Orman) shifted out to improve.  J Orman was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident.
 
RAINBOW CONNECTION – Near the 1200m bumped and taken in by NAVAL TRADER. Approaching the 200m taken in and became awkwardly placed near the heels of KADALL after being taken in by NAVAL TRADER (N Beriman). N Beriman was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident. Rider J Orman was reprimanded under AR132(6)(b) for raising his whip arm above shoulder height
 
Race 7: LADBROKES FAST WITHDRAWALS BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP  1200 M
 
I SEE YOU COMING – Jumped in at the start. Shifted in under pressure approaching the winning post.
 
STRIKING PLAINS – Jumped out at the start.
 
ELLIBABY – Raced keenly in the middle stages. Shifted out under pressure leaving the 100m before being corrected by its rider.
 
SKYWRITER – Held up approaching the 200m.
 
SALT LAKE BETTY – Laid in for a short distance near the 800m.
 
BALTRAY – Crowded on jumping between STRIKING PLAINS which jumped out and I SEE YOU COMING which jumped in. Shifted out under pressure near the 100m before being corrected by its rider. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
LIMERO – When no other apprentice was available Stewards permitted C Collis to claim only 1kg of his 3 kg allowance. Apprentice Collis was subsequently fined $300 under AR143(14)(a). When asked to comment on the performance rider C Collis could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. Trainer S Kendrick advised LIMERO would be given a brief let up prior to racing again.
 
MISS EMMA – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.Raced wide for the majority of the event.
