Prior to the declaration of correct weight, stewards considered an objection lodged by jockey D. Smith the rider of the second placed YOU AND I against EL PENSADOR (K. Wilson-Taylor) being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 200m. Stewards after hearing evidence from the relevant parties and viewing the stewards patrol footage, found that near the 200m, EL PENSADOR improved into a tight run between FREEMAN and YOU AND I which shifted in slightly resulting in those runners bumping. Stewards however bearing in mind the half head margin and how both runners finished the race off, could not be satisfied that had this incident not occurred that YOU AND I would have finished ahead of EL PENSADOR at the conclusion of the event and therefore the objection was dismissed, and correct weight was given on the judges semaphored numbers.

FREEMAN – Passing the 200m, tightened for running between CLUEDO which shifted out marginally and EL PENSADOR which improved to the mares outside and while racing in restricted room, had to be checked after being contacted from either side.

CLUEDO (NZ) – Passing the 200m, after laying out marginally, made contact with FREEMAN resulting in the hindquarters of CLUEDO being turned and being severely hampered.

YOU AND I (NZ) – Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide until the 1000m. Shifted in marginally passing the 250m and shortly thereafter made contact with EL PENSADOR which improved to the inside of the gelding. Jockey D. Smith the rider of YOU AND I was reminded of his obligations to stop and straighten his mounts when they shift ground.
