GENERAL
This report was updated on 18 October 2024 to include the Stewards findings of an adjourned inquiry from Race 8.
Stewards permitted the following overweights:
Race 5 – K. Wilson-Taylor +0.5kg
When no other Apprentice was available, Stewards permitted Apprentice C. Collis to claim only 2kg of his 3 kg allowance in races 2 (SAVANNAH GANSTER), 5 (WHEEPER) and 8 (PINK CASHMERE). Apprentice C. Collis was subsequently fined $500 under AR143(14)(a).
As Jockey R. Maloney was overweight in race 5, Stewards permitted Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor to replace him. Jockey R. Maloney was fined $400 pursuant to AR 190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight.
Race 1: LADBROKES YARD COMMENTS QTIS TWO-YEARS-OLD PLATE 1050 M
SOUL INTENT – Leaving the 150m, shifted out obliging its rider to stop and straighten the gelding.
CUDDLES FOR KIMMY – Held up rounding the home turn up until passing the 150m.
ELODIE'S RAINBOW – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be shin sore. Trainer C. Geran was advised the filly would require a veterinary clearance if starting again within the next 6 weeks. C. Geran advised Stewards that it was now his intention to send the filly for a spell.
GEITZ – Slow to begin. Raced wide early. Jockey C. Graham reported her mount raced greenly throughout but would derive benefit from today’s performance.
OUR KUNOICHI – Slow to begin. Near the 700m had to be steadied from the heels of CUDDLES FOR KIMMY which shifted in. Apprentice C. Collis rider of CUDDLES FOR KIMMY was severely reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a). Passing the 100m improved onto the heels of SOUL INTENT and was obliged to shift out. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have bled bilaterally for the first time. Trainer R. Tyrell was advised the filly would be stood down from racing pursuant to AR 79(4) for 3 months and must trial or gallop 1000m prior to being permitted to race again.
Race 2: NATIONAL LEAK DETECTION MAIDEN PLATE 2070 M
CROC FIGHT – Near the 1500m raced in restricted room inside DONI TONDO, shifted in and hampered VENCE. C. Graham rider of DONI TONDO was advised to exercise greater care.
DONI TONDO – Raced wide in the early stages before taking up a leading position passing the 1400m. Commenced to weaken from the 900m and near the 700m raced in restricted room to the inside of MIDNIGHT SEAS which laid in. Eased down over the final 600m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying signs of cardiac arrythmia. Trainer K. Schweida was advised the gelding would require a veterinary clearance inclusive of ECG results and would also require a cardiac auscultation performed by a veterinarian following a gallop, trial or jump out of 1000m prior to being permitted to race again.
PAPAL WARS (NZ) – Approaching the 900m, shifted out to avoid the tiring DONI TONDO, a short distance later became awkwardly placed at the heels of CROC FIGHT, shifted out and bumped VENCE. Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.
VENCE – Began awkwardly. Bumped and taken wider near the 800m when PAPAL WARS shifted out. Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor rider of PAPAL WARS was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) for this incident.
BETTER DRAW (NZ) – Slow to begin. Jockey A. Jones stated the gelding was disappointing and could offer no explanation for today’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
SAVANNAH GANGSTER – Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.
Race 3: EZY PROJECTS BM68 HANDICAP 1660 M
Correct weight was delayed allowing Stewards to review the photo finish in relation to the judge’s placings of the 3rd and 4th place getters. Stewards were subsequently satisfied with the judge’s declaration and declared correct weight on the semaphore board numbers.
BASARWA (NZ) – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
TEXAS (NZ) – Shifted in on jumping. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
JUPITUS – Laid in under pressure in the early stages of the home straight. Jockey J. Orman reported his mount felt comfortable during the race but raced flat when asked for an effort near the 400m and was disappointing in its finishing efforts.
TAMBOURINE MAN – Shifted out on jumping and bumped SMART AS SMART.
SECURITY ADVISOR – Shifted out on jumping.
SMART AS SMART – Hampered between runners after the start and blundered shortly after.
Race 4: STEAMATIC FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1350 M
IVY DEXSTRESS – Bucked after the start and continued to buck until being retired from the event approaching the 1200m. Trainer T. Gollan was advised IVY DEXSTRESS would be required to barrier trial satisfactorily prior to resuming. Trainer T. Gollan advised Stewards it was now his intention to send IVY DEXSTRESS for a spell.
DIVINE GEM – Shifted in on jumping.
SILVER GODDESS – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
ADORADEC – Trainer B. Lockwood advised a change of tactics, and the mare would be ridden further back if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly. Commenced to lay out under pressure approaching the 150m and became awkwardly placed between JUNGLE LAW and ARAMINTA, resulting in JUNGLE LAW and ARAMINTA bumping and becoming unbalanced.
ARAMINTA – Crowded after the start.
Race 5: JOHNS LYNG GROUP MAIDEN PLATE 1110 M
BUNDELLA – Jockey J. Orman reported that his mount was under pressure before the home turn and was disappointed in its finishing efforts. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
DIBBA DOBBA – Raced wide throughout.
ROSEBERY TERRACE – Over raced near the 800m when racing in restricted room. Raced greenly in the home straight when placed under pressure.
CANTANKEROUS – Raced wide throughout. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor reported his mount raced greenly throughout and he had hoped to have secured a forward racing position, however he was unable to do so and was obliged to race three wide with cover and in his opinion this did not suit the gelding.
RUM RUNNER (NZ) – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority.
WHEEPER – Approaching the 800m, had to be steadied after improving onto the heels of DIBBA DOBBA. Leaving the 200m, when shifting around heels to improve became unbalanced for a short distance. Raced greenly in the home straight.
LUCKY LENI – Began awkwardly.
Following the running of race 5, the track was upgraded to a Soft 5.
Race 6: ARC PROJECTS BM78 HANDICAP 1200 M
This event was slightly delayed owing to AZZAREACH being reluctant to proceed to the barriers. Trainer D. Bougoure was advised a warning would be placed on AZZAREACH which was reluctant to proceed to the barriers.
POCKET FULL – Approaching the 200m, momentarily raced in restricted room when attempting to improve into the inside of AZZAREACH.
AZZAREACH – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped I AM ARTIE. Laid out rounding the home turn.
RAINBOW CONNECTION – Jockey A. Mallyon was fined $100 pursuant to AR 132(6)(b) for raising his whip arm above shoulder height. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account Jockey Mallyon’s recent poor record under this rule.
I AM ARTIE – Hampered after the start.
ROLL UP – Began awkwardly and shifted in abruptly, making contact with the rail and becoming very unbalanced.
HE'S HEAVEN – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped I AM ARTIE. Over raced in the early stages whilst attempting to restrain to find cover. Raced wide without cover throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Jockey L. Dempsey was reprimanded pursuant to AR 132(6)(b) for raising his whip arm above shoulder height.
MAYA BAY – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Lost it’s off-fore plate.
Race 7: PIRCSA COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1350 M
BOBBY SHIRAZ (NZ) – Slow to begin.
SUNLORD – Trainer T. Gollan advised a change of tactics, and the gelding would be ridden further back if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly. Had to be steadied from heels near the 900m when the pace of the race slackened. Shifted out rounding the home turn and bumped with THE PLAYER.
LISTENTOZOU (NZ) – Jockey J. Orman reported his mount over raced throughout the event which in his opinion, had a detrimental effect to the horse’s effort.
THE PLAYER – Raced wide throughout. Bumped rounding the home turn with SUNLORD.
SECOND SUN – Over raced during the early and middle stages of the event. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester was fined $800 pursuant to AR 131(b) in that he failed to ride his mount out fully to the end of the race. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account the racing characteristics of SECOND SUN over the final 100m when laying in and in the circumstances could not be comfortably satisfied that solely the actions of Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester in failing to ride his mount out to the completion of the event, had a material effect on the finishing position of SECOND SUN.
ACAPPELLA NOVA – Began awkwardly and bumped shortly after the start.
AIRSWING – Apprentice E. Lang reported that gelding over raced throughout the event and may have got its tongue over the bit. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
WAYFARER'S WAY – Shifted in on jumping.
CLAUDIUS – Raced keenly during the middle stages of the event. Held up on entering the home straight until approaching the 200m.
Race 8: INSUREBUILD BM65 HANDICAP 1200 M
STRAPPARSI – Approaching the 800m, momentarily steadied from the heels of MISS BAYLES which shifted in when not fully clear. Jockey J. Huxtable, the rider of MISS BAYLES, was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.
TALANA – Bumped after the start. Raced in restricted room approaching the 1000m. Raced greenly in the middle stages. Approaching the 300m, shifted in and away from DEALING’S DONE when racing greenly. Approaching the 200m, shifted out under pressure before being corrected by its rider. Continued to shift out under pressure over the concluding stages.
I AM A MARVEL – Laid out under pressure over the final 150m.
KEMI ZABI – Approaching the 800m, severely checked and blundered resulting in rider E. Lang becoming unbalanced in the saddle and as a consequence, shifted out and bumped SALT LAKE BETTY. Stewards subsequently issued a charge of careless riding under AR 131(a) against Jockey T. Thornton rider of DEALING’S DONE and adjourned the inquiry until Thursday the 17th of October 2024 at the request of Jockey T. Thornton to provide further evidence in defence of the charge. At the resumed inquiry on Thursday 17 October 2024, T. Thornton was found guilty of careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) in that as the rider of DEALING’S DONE, when approaching the 800m she allowed her mount to shift in from a position 4 wide on the track to a three wide position when insufficiently clear of Emily Lang, the rider of KEMI ZAMBI, as a consequence of that shift, the racing room became severely restricted for KEMI ZAMBI resulting in Emily Lang having to severely check KEMI ZAMBI from the heels of DEALING’S DONE, becoming severely unbalanced and losing its rightful running. After hearing submissions on penalty, Stewards suspended Jockey Thornton’s licence to ride in races for a period of 16 days commencing midnight Sunday 20 October 2024 up to and including Tuesday 5 November 2024. Jockey T. Thornton was advised of her appeal rights.
MISS TAMBO – Reared as the start was affected and lost ground. Trainer T. Gollan was advised a warning would be placed on the mare’s barrier manners.
SALT LAKE BETTY – Leaving the 900m, bumped by KEMI ZABI when that runner was checked. Raced wide majority. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
MISS EMMA – Raced in restricted room approaching the 900m.
MISS BAYLES – Laid out under pressure over the final 150m.
DEALING'S DONE – Raced wide throughout. Laid in when placed under pressure near the 300m. Leaving the 250m, shifted out under pressure.
PINK CASHMERE – Leaving the 900m, inconvenienced and had to be steadied from the heels of KEMI ZABI which was checked and became unbalanced. Leaving the 250m, improved on to the heels of DEALING’S DONE, resulting in rider C. Collis shifting inwards in an attempt to secure a run between DEALING’S DONE and TALANA. Approaching the 200m, had to be steadied from the heels of TALANA which shifted out under pressure. Apprentice J. Molloy rider of TALANA was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding in this incident.
