Race 1: TATTERSALL’S ARCADE H’CAP - 1600m

GENERAL PURPLE (A. Pattillo) raced wide in the early stages until pressing forward to take a position one off the fence near the 1000m.
ESPARANZA (Matthew Palmer) raced fiercely in the early stages at the heels of DELAGO PILLI (L. Cassidy).
PRIMEVAL DEMAND (P. Hammersley) hung out rounding the home turn.
Jockey R. Goltz, the rider of CHANNEL CROSSING, explained that he had anticipated positioning his mount midfield; however from his wide barrier draw and due to the pace of the race in the early stages, he was obliged to settle CHANNEL CROSSING at the rear of the field. R. Goltz added that CHANNEL CROSSING was momentarily held up rounding the home turn until securing clear running in the early stages of the straight, at which stage the horse found the line strongly.
A post-race veterinary examination of DELAGO PILLI failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 2: HAMILTON HOTEL QTIS 600 H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Marking Time 2nd – Norocos 3rd – Rapid Leica Dane 4th - Cavaliered
HIGH CHANCELLOR (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.
Near the 600m HIGH CHANCELLOR overraced for a short distance at the heels of CAVALIERED (J. Byrne).
Near the 300m MARKING TIME (G. Colless) was disappointed for a run between THE BARRACKS (B. Stewart) and NOROCOS (R. Goltz), both of which shifted ground slightly.
Approaching the 200m RAPID LEICA DANE (B. Pengelly) was disappointed for a run between MARKING TIME and THE BARRACKS and was obliged to then shift ground to obtain clear running.
Stewards sought an explanation from M. Cahill and trainer L. Birchley in respect of the performance of SLICE AND DICE. M. Cahill stated that the horse travelled comfortably even though he was unable to obtain cover; however when he placed the horse under pressure approaching the home turn SLICE AND DICE failed to respond as it had on its previous occasions and in his opinion performed very disappointingly. M. Cahill added that the firm surface of the track today may have also had an effect on the overall performance of SLICE AND DICE. Trainer L. Birchley was unable to offer an explanation and advised stewards that SLICE AND DICE had trained on well from its previous win and he was confident the colt would perform well today. Mr Birchley undertook to advise stewards of anything that came to light in the days subsequent to the event that may have had an effect on the horse’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of SLICE AND DICE failed to reveal any abnormalities and a swab sample was taken.
The Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that NOROCOS bled from one nostril. Trainer N. Hilton was advised that under the provisions of AR. 53A NOROCOS must undergo a satisfactory gallop of 1000m in the presence of a steward.
Race 3: SKY RACING PLATE - 2118m
1st – Moon Chaser 2nd – Forbes 3rd – Never You Mind 4th – Lucky Toss
TANZILL (J. Taylor) overraced in the early stages.
NEVER YOU MIND (M. Cahill) raced extremely wide until assuming the lead at the 1200m.
DAWNS QUEEN (C. McIver) was momentarily held up for clear running upon straightening.
Jockey L. Rolls reported to stewards that SHOOTING SCENE overraced until a point near the 1200m and added that the finishing effort of SHOOTING SCENE, when considering this, had merit.
A post-race veterinary examination of FORT ‘N’ WON (B. Pengelly), which compounded to finish a distant last, failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer T. Crane advised stewards that the horse would be sent for an immediate spell.
Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy in respect of the performance of UNDER THE COUNTER. L. Cassidy stated that as a result of being obliged to race wide he was forced to restrain his mount to a position further back then he would have liked; however when he placed UNDER THE COUNTER under pressure near the 600m the horse failed to respond to his riding and proved very disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of UNDER THE COUNTER revealed that the gelding was exhibiting a slower than normal recovery rate.
Race 4: NORTHSIDE ROOFING H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Deception Bay 2nd – Woorim 3rd – I’m Ruthless 4th – Jazz Heart
THORONDO was declared a late scratching by order of the stewards on veterinary advice at 12.42 p.m. when the Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that it was sore in the off fore fetlock.
LA BELLA LUISA (J. Bowditch) raced wide throughout.
In the early part of the straight SOMEWHERE SAFER (M. Hellyer) had difficulty obtaining clear running between BEAUTIFUL MOON (B. Stewart) and CALL TO ORDER (J. Taylor).
At about the 500m RAINCOAT (Matthew Palmer) became unbalanced and lost its position when crowded for room between JAZZ HEART (L. Rolls) and HOW BRAVE (S. Seamer), which was taken out slightly by WOORIM (L. Cassidy) which shifted a little ground to avoid the heels of I’M RUTHLESS (D. Browne). In the opinion of the stewards it was not possible to attribute responsibility to any one rider and therefore no direct action was taken; however those involved were advised to exercise care at all times.
The Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that IT’S WUNDERBAR (C. Reith) strained its off fore flexor tendon. J. Vaughan, trainer of IT’S WUNDERBAR, was told that before the horse would be allowed to race again a veterinary certificate indicating suitability to race will have to be produced.
Race 5: HARDY BROTHERS JEWELLERS QTIS H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Princess Qualo 2nd – Temple Of Boom 3rd – Tierqualo 4th – Captain Sonador
On return to scale S. Seamer, the rider of CAPTAIN SONADOR, placed 4th by the Judge, said that he considered he may have run 3rd. Therefore correct weight was delayed and the Judge produced photographic evidence which was viewed by the stewards, S. Seamer, Mr Roger Milne, trainer of CAPTAIN SONADOR, and Mr Wagner, owner of the horse. This proved to be inconclusive. Therefore the stewards, together with the connections involved, viewed the computer image in the Judge’s box, which all agreed confirmed the Judge’s placings. Accordingly correct weight was declared on the numbers originally semaphored.
I’LL RULE (C. McIver), which was slow to begin, raced ungenerously for the majority of the event.
DULBYDILLA (A. Spinks) blundered on jumping away.
Near the 1100m DULBYDILLA had to be steadied when momentarily crowded by FALLS CREEK (B. Stewart), which shifted in. After this incident FALLS CREEK came back from the heels of PRINCESS QUALO (L. Cassidy) and as a consequence further inconvenience was caused to DULBYDILLA.
DOUBLE HEART (J. Taylor) raced wide throughout.
Near the 700m DANEOMITE (L. Rolls), which was racing awkwardly with its head up, shifted out and was checked off the heels of TIERQUALO (Matthew Palmer). After the race DANEOMITE was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon who reported that DANEOMITE had sustained a small laceration to the outside of the near fore cannon.
After the 400m PRINCESS QUALO (L. Cassidy) shifted out to go forward and in doing so caused some inconvenience to LONG ROAD TO GLORY (A. Pattillo) and TIERQUALO. After this incident LONG ROAD TO GLORY became unbalanced and shifted in proving somewhat difficult to ride out to the line.
Race 6: CARLTON MID COUNTRY CUP - 1200m
1st – Drenalin 2nd – Millers Wheel 3rd – Gobou 4th – Casholet
PEDRO’S AMAIZING, which was injured in transit to the track, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and declared a late scratching by order of the stewards at 11.40 a.m.
At about the 1000m KARALIUS (A. Pattillo) was steadied to avoid the heels of DRENALIN (J. Wood) which shifted in when only just clear.
Near the 900m WILLLYCLANG (C. McIver) overreacted and shifted out when being steadied to avoid the heels of ABIRRA (J. Byrne), which shifted in when not quite clear. J. Byrne was asked to exercise care at all times when shifting ground.
Mr M. Jeynes, stable representative for trainer T. Dougall, was advised that KNEEL AND RAISE, which commenced to hang out from the 1000m and took no further competitive part in the event from that stage, must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards before being permitted to start again. As a result of KNEEL AND RAISE running off, some inconvenience was caused to ABIRRA (J. Byrne) and WILLYCLANG (C. McIver).
A post-race veterinary examination of MILLERS WHEEL revealed that the horse had sustained a laceration to the near gaskin.
Apprentice J. Wood was reprimanded under AR. 145 for returning to scale in excess of half a kilogram over his declared weight.

On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on PLAIN MAGIC be refunded, with deductions of 7 cents in the dollar on the face value of win and place bets to apply.
On jumping away BOOGALOO (M. Allen) became unbalanced when crowded for room between NEPRO (C. McIver) and FELINE FLYER (B. Stewart), both of which shifted some ground.
SHE’S IN THE GUIDE (J. Taylor), DANCE GIRL DANCE (M. Cahill) and CELESTAFY (S. Seamer) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 1000m PERTINENCE (P. Hammersley) had to be steadied when tightened for room by FELINE FLYER, which was taken in by VISA LISA, which had in turn been taken in by ERIPSNI (A. Pattillo).
Approaching the 600m GETAMOVEON (M. Hellyer) had to be steadied when tightened for room between TOOTSIE ZYNSKY (D. Browne), which shifted in when not quite clear, and ERIPSNI, which shifted out off the heels of CONQUERING QUEEN (B. Pengelly). VISA LISA, which was following, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of GETAMOVEON and then shifted out making contact with DANCE GIRL DANCE.
For some distance in the early part of the straight VISA LISA (L. Cassidy) had trouble obtaining clear running. VISA LISA was able to obtain a run at about the 200m.
After the 300m FELINE FLYER shifted out in an endeavour to go forward. As a consequence of this, some inconvenience was caused to GETAMOVEON (M. Hellyer) and TOOTSIE ZYNSKY (D. Browne).
Following his ride in this event, A. Pattillo was examined by the Club’s medical officer and stood down from his engagement in Race 8. Matthew Palmer was substituted as the rider of HUMMA in that event.
Race 8: TATTERSALL’S RECOGNITION STAKES H’CAP - 1600m
1st – Secrets Untold 2nd – Humma 3rd – Pepperwood 4th – Kentish Rose
From a point near the 1100m until leaving the 1000m OUR LUKAS (B. Pengelly) made contact with ZAHAS PRIDE (L. Cassidy) on several occasions in an attempt to force that horse to the running rail. At a subsequent inquiry B. Pengelly was reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances he should desist from such riding when it becomes evident that the runner to his inside is intent on holding its line of running. A short distance after this incident the saddle on OUR LUKAS became displaced, placing its rider at a significant disadvantage which resulted in OUR LUKAS taking no further competitive part in the event. A post-race veterinary examination of OUR LUKAS (B. Pengelly) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy regarding the performance of ZAHAS PRIDE. L. Cassidy stated that the horse began well, however displayed a tendency to hang out in the middle stages of the race and when he asked it for an effort it failed to respond to his riding and compounded in the home straight. L. Cassidy explained that in his opinion the horse may not have been entirely comfortable on the firm surface today and was also of the view the horse may not be up to running out a strong 1600m. A post-race veterinary examination of ZAHAS PRIDE (L. Cassidy) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
