Race 1: Sirromet The Phoenix - 1400m
Connections advised that with the addition of blinkers today, RACING IN THE WIND would be ridden more forward. After being severely hampered at the start, RACING IN THE WIND settled at the rear of the field.
RACING IN THE WIND (T. Clark) was severely hampered at the start when tightened for room between GYPSY DIAMOND (C. Reith) and L'ENTRECOTE (J. Byrne), both of which shifted ground.
LOCOMOTION (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.
L'ENTRECOTE (J. Byrne) overraced in the early stages.
CHOISENEGGER (J. Stanley) also overraced in the early stages and when EL TORANADO (R. McMahon) crossed to the lead near the 1000m, CHOISENEGGER had to be checked to avoid that runner's heels.
After passing the 600m, CHOSEN IDOL (G. Colless) shifted out around the heels of CANNYZING (R. Jamieson) in order to improve, taking FORELOCK (P. Robl) wider on the track.
Leaving the 400m, SIR MOMENTS (M. Cahill) shifted out to improve and bumped ALL THINGS IN TIME (T. Bell).
L'ENRECOTE was inclined to lay out rounding the home turn.
LOCOMOTION was unable to secure clear running in the home straight until approaching the 100m.
Nearing and passing the 200m, CHOISENEGGER was held up when awkwardly placed at the heels of the tiring ELTORANADO.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice R. Jamieson as to the reason she did not move CANNYZING to the outside of the heels of L'ENTRECOTE rounding the home turn rather than remain trailing that horse. This decision resulted in CHOSEN IDOL progressing to her outside near the 450m and CANNYZING being held up for clear running until approaching the 200m. R. Jamieson explained that she had been instructed to keep the horse balanced rounding the home turn and not to place CANNYZING under full pressure until after straightening. Trainer H. Norman confirmed the instructions, however conceded that in the circumstances of this particular race, it would have been beneficial if CANNYZING had moved to the outside of the heels of L'ENTRECOTE rounding he home turn so as to enable an unimpeded run to the finish. Whilst stewards accepted that apprentice Jamieson's decision had no effect on the finishing position of CANNYZING, she was nonetheless advised that she would be expected to improve her position when opportunities were presented.
When asked to explain the disappointing performance of EL TORANADO, rider R. McMahon stated that from the wide barrier, EL TORANADO did have to work hard in the early stages to obtain the lead near the 1000m. He further added that the colt did not run out a strong 1400m in the prevailing track conditions. A post race veterinary examination of EL TORANADO revealed it to have pulled up lame in both forelegs.
CANNYZING lost its off fore plate in running.
Race 2: Mitty's Benchmark 90 H'cap - 1818m
RAEBURN (R. McMahon) was slow to begin.
MARKOUT (A. Allen) and TRAJET (C. Munce) raced 3 wide throughout.
G. Colless reported at scale that DUSTY GOLD hung out despite his efforts throughout the race and lost ground and was eased down in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination of DUSTY GOLD failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer M. Dunn will be interviewed regarding this matter.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice A. Allen, rider of MARKOUT, regarding the reason he did not attempt to obtain a trailing position near the 900m behind DIENEKES rather than remain 3 wide. Apprentice Allen explained that when racing 3 wide he momentarily had the opportunity to obtain cover, however at the same stage T. Bell, rider of ONETIMEATBANDCAMP, was attempting to remain in a position one off the fence, and he was of the view that had he shifted in he would have caused interference to ONETIMEATBANDCAMP and disrupted the momentum of MARKOUT. Stewards were of the opinion it would have been a better option to attempt to obtain cover at that point in order to conserve the gelding to allow it to finish the race off.
A post race veterinary examination of WARRIOR WITHIN, which compounded badly in the home straight, revealed it to be lame in the near foreleg. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for WARRIOR WITHIN prior to its next race start.
Race 3: Al Basti Equiworld Eagle Farm Cup - 2200m
The start of this race was delayed when VOILA ICI became fractious in the barriers. VOILA ICI was removed from the gates, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.
On return to scale a protest was lodged by B. Rawiller, rider of the 2nd placegetter, MANIGHAR, against QUINTESSENTIAL (D. Browne) being declared the winner, alleging interference on the turn out of the front straight on the first occasion, and also down the running in the straight. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the stewards' patrol video it was established that after passing the winning post on the first occasion, MANIGHAR was tightened for room when QUINTESSENTIAL shifted in when not fully clear, and further that QUINTESSENTIAL did shift out under pressure over the final 300m, which resulted in MANIGHAR being taken out slightly. After considering these 2 incidents, and the manner in which both horses closed off the race, stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that the interference sustained to MANIGHAR had a material effect on the placings and correct weight was declared on the Judge's placings. At a subsequent inquiry, D. Browne, rider of QUINTESSENTIAL, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that passing the winning post on the first occasion he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of MANIGHAR, resulting in that horse being crowded for room for several strides. D. Browne was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 8 June and to expire at midnight, 19 June.
Near the 500m, LIGHTS OF HEAVEN (L. Nolen) shifted in and made contact with MORIARTY (N. Rawiller).
Stewards sought an explanation from N. Rawiller regarding his vigour on MORIARTY in the early part of the home straight. N. Rawiller stated that MORIARTY is best suited when saved for a final sprint of 300 metres, and in the early stages of the home straight he was able to improve his position trailing MANIGHAR and over the final 200m he shifted to the outside of that runner and the gelding worked to the line well.
When questioned regarding the performance of LIGHTS OF HEAVEN, trainer P. Moody was of the opinion that the mare was not able to gain a trail into the race from the 600m although he was slightly disappointed with its finishing effort over the final 200m.
ZABEELIONAIRE (M. Rodd) was inclined to lay in when placed under pressure in the early part of the home straight.
Race 4: Treasury Casino Spear Chief H'cap - 1500m
MEET GEORGE (E. Wilkinson) jumped very awkwardly and lost ground.
P. Hammersley reported that he allowed TOKAMAK to shift shift wider upon straightening as he was of the opinion that the going close to the rail was inferior.
Race 5: Channel Seven Bright Shadow H'cap - 1200m
EMOTIONAL CIRCUS (C. Reith) and TUKIYO (R. McMahon) was slow to begin.
CITY OF SONG (B. Avdulla) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
Near the 800m, WHATEVERWHENEVER (M. Cahill) became unbalanced when momentarily tightened onto the running rail by SHARNEE ROSE (J. Cassidy).
TUKIYO (R. McMahon) and OUR HUSSEY (T. Bell) raced 3 wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from T. Clark regarding the disappointing performance of BOUND TO BLUSH. He said the mare enjoyed a nice run in front but raced under pressure in the early part of the straight, but once headed by DETOURS it commenced to tire. He suggested the mare may not have backed up from its last start on 25 May. Trainer J. O'Shea is of the opinion that BOUND TO BLUSH is better suited when able to race with cover.
After the running of this race the track rating was upgraded to Slow 6 retrospective.
Race 6: Sky Racing Queensland Guineas - 1400m
As M. Rodd was dually engaged on DOUBTFILLY and LILLIBURLERO, L. Cassidy was substituted as the rider of DOUBTFILLY.
Connections advised DANCES ON STARS would be ridden more quietly today, and COMPLICATE would be ridden forward with cover. The horses were ridden accordingly.
The start of this race was delayed when BOBAN had to be unloaded from the barriers to have its tongue-tie refitted.
FERMENT (C. Reith) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
LUCKY HUSSLER (J. Cassidy) was slow to begin.
GENERAL EXHIBIT (T. Harrison) raced very fiercely in the early stages and approaching the 900m had to be restrained to avoid the heels of LUNAR RISE (S.Arnold).
Near the 700m, LUCKY HUSSLER (J. Cassidy) shifted out and made contact with EYE WINSOME (J. Byrne).
BOBAN (H. Bowman) was held up for clear running in the early part of the home straight, and had to alter course the outside of LUNAR RISE (S. Arnold) after passing the 300m in order to improve.
Approaching and passing the 300m, MY SHABELLA (T. Bell) had to be steadied from the heels of SALUTER (J. Stanley) when that runner commenced to weaken.
DOUBTFILLY (L. Cassidy) and JIMANDO (T. Clark) raced wide throughout.
J. Riddell reported that PLATINUM KINGDOM did not appreciate racing in restricted room in the middle stages but was slightly disappointing when placed under pressure in the home straight.
Stewards sought an explanation from T. Harrison regarding the tactics adopted on GENERAL EXHIBIT, which was ridden in a midfield position which was in contrast to its most recent racing racing pattern. Apprentice Harrison stated that she had no specific instructions on GENERAL EXHIBIT other than to attempt to obtain some cover as the gelding has a tendency to overrace when ridden forward. She added that this has been the intention to ride GENERAL EXHIBIT in this manner in recent starts.
Race 7: XXXX Gold Queensland Oaks - 2400m
Trainer C. Conners was fined $200 for the late change of blinkers to be added to the gear of DEAR DEMI.
KAZANLUK (K. McEvoy) and IRELAND'S TEARDROP (P. Robl) bumped on jumping away.
SOAPY STAR (H. Bowman) shifted out at the start and bumped THE LAST SHOWER (E. Wilkinson), which in turn shifted out, resulting in MISS ZENELLA (L. Nolen) having to be checked when taken across the heels of PORCELLANUS (T. Clark).
Near the 1400m SOAPY STAR, when overracing, had to be restrained from the heels of IRELAND'S TEARDROP (P. Robl). VAQUERA (M. Rodd), which was following, had to be steadied and shifted out. A short distance later, VAQUERA shifted back towards the rail and FANTISHA (T. Bell) had to be steadied.
Passing the 1000m, THE LAST SHOWER (E. Wilkinson) shifted in despite the efforts of its rider, which resulted in ANTARCTIC DREAM (B. Avdulla) becoming unbalanced when crowded for room on to the running rail.
Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight, VAQUERA was held up when unable to obtain clear running.
IRELAND'S TEARDROP lost its near hind plate in running.
R. McLeod, rider of GONDOKORO, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 400m he shifted out, resulting in SOAPY STAR (H. Bowman) being taken out on to DEAR DEMI (N. Rawiller), which had to be checked when tightened for room between SOAPY STAR and IRELAND'S TEARDROP (P. Robl), and a short distance later SOAPY STAR being severely hampered. R. McLeod was suspended from riding in races for a period of 8 meetings, to commenced at midnight, 8 June and to expire at midnight 19 June.
R. McLeod, rider of GONDOKORO, was fined $300 for making celebratory gesture prior to the finish line.
Race 8: Magic Millions QTC Cup - 1300m
Connections advised that MISS STALLABELLE would be ridden closer to the speed if circumstances permit. MISS STALLABELLE was unable to muster any early speed and settled towards the rear of the field.
Stewards permitted R. Wiggins to ride DOZINTMATERANYWAY and M. Walker to ride LATIN NEWS overweight due to no other riders being available.
The start of this race was delayed when the near-side front plate of STARTSMEUP had to be refitted.
MAHISARA (J. Cassidy) and DOZINTMAERANYWAY (R. Wiggins) were slow to begin.
HOT SNITZEL (N. Rawiller) hung out in the middle stages.
Passing the 800m, MAHISARA (J. Cassidy) shifted out and bumped the hind quarters of STEEL ZIP (C. Reith).
K. McEvoy reported that GALAH hung out rounding the home turn.
MORNING CAPTAIN (J. Byrne) was inclined to lay in under pressure and over the concluding stages had to alter course to the inside of CONSERVATORIUM (J. Bowditch).
GALAH and MORNING CAPTAIN (J. Byrne) raced 3 wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MAHISARA, J. Cassidy stated that the horse never travelled comfortably during the race and he was forced to apply pressure to it in the middle stages in order to hold a position between BORDER REBEL (T. Bell) and STEEL ZIP (C. Reith). J. Cassidy added he was disappointed with the finishing effort of MAHISARA today. A post race veterinary examination of MAHISARA revealed the horse to be exhibiting a cough.
T. Harrison, rider of GRIFFON, was cautioned for using her whip above shoulder height.
