Race 8: RACEZONE CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1600M

After viewing the stewards' patrol footage, apprentice R. Williams, the rider of 5th placegetter HIGH DEGREE, lodged an objection against HALLS CREEK being placed 4th, alleging interference near the 200m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the videos, it was established that leaving the 200m HALLS CREEK shifted in when not completely clear of HIGH DEGREE, resulting in HIGH DEGREE being steadied and having to shift to the outside of the heels of that runner and losing ground. As stewards were of the opinion that the ground lost by HIGH DEGREE exceeded the margin of a neck separating both runners at the finish, the protest was upheld and correct weight was declared on the amended placings of 3, 10, 13, 11 and 5. At a subsequent inquiry, D. Browne, the rider of HALLS CREEK, was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in slightly after leaving the 200m.

LOTHARIO – Blundered on jumping.

HALLS CREEK – Slow to begin.

THERMAL UNIT – Jumped awkwardly. Raced wide without cover from the 800m. J. Lloyd reported that the horse was ridden back in the field as instructed and overraced in the early stages. He was of the opinion that the pace of the race did not suit the horse as when the race developed into a sprint home the gelding was left flat-footed and could not make up ground. He indicated that connections suggested that they may consider sending the horse for a spell.

HIGH DEGREE – Reared as the gates opened and lost ground.

EYE OF HORUS – Forced wider on the track approaching the 1000m and raced wide without cover from that point.
