The start was delayed when WOW FACTOR was presented to the enclosure without a norton bit, which was a gear change today for the horse.  Trainer T. Sears was fined $100.00.

WALHAAN – Approaching and passing the 800m attempted to shift out and improve and in doing so bumped with MAGNATUNE on a number of occasions.  App A. Sewell (WALHAAN) was cautioned and advised to ensure he has sufficient room to improve in future. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off fore leg.   Trainer G. Boyd was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to WALHAAN racing again.

Race 3: Jim Beam Open H’Cap – 1200m

TOO GOOD TO REFUSE – Trainer D. Forster advised the instructions would be to be more aggressive in the early stages today in order to have the horse closer to the speed if possible.  After being ridden along in the early stages TOO GOOD TO REFUSE still settled in a rearward position. Shifted out under pressure over the final 100m.

DIVINE SERVICE – When questioned regarding the tactics adopted in the early stages jockey L. Tarrant explained he was instructed to ride the horse with a sit today as UPSTART PRIDE and ROCKY KING were natural leaders and the gelding would not have enough speed to go with those horses.  Jockey Tarrant added he rode DIVINE SERVICE in a similar manner to when it won last start.  Jockey Tarrant further added that in his opinion the gelding did not travel as comfortably today as it had at its most recent start. Stewards noted his explanation.

ROCKY KING – Stewards questioned App R. Williams regarding her decision to allow UPSTART PRIDE to cross her mount near the 1000m and obtain the lead.   App Williams explained that when UPSTART PRIDE improved to her outside she was of the view that that horse had superior speed to ROCKY KING and to maintain the lead she would have had to make too much use of her horse, which in her view would have been detrimental to its chances.  Stewards noted her explanation.

DANCE OF HEROES – Hung in rounding the home turn and proved difficult to ride.  Raced 3 wide throughout.

RULING FORCE – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

HUDSON COUNTY – When questioned regarding the performance of HUDSON COUNTY App Ainsworth stated she was obliged to work hard to maintain the lead in the early stages and approaching the home turn HUDSON COUNTY was under pressure and not improving to her urgings and she had specific instructions to remain to the inside in the home straight as the gelding has hung in under pressure in previous starts.  Trainer R. Hurley agreed that HUDSON COUNTY had to work hard to maintain the lead in the early stages and confirmed he had instructed App Ainsworth to remain to the inside in the home straight.  A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
