Ipswich Turf Club 9th March 2022 - Race 2

Stewards today concluded an inquiry from race 2 on the above date into the circumstances as to Ryan Maloney being dislodged from his mount SACRED OATH (NZ). It was established that near the 1400m, Ben Thompson, rider of TESAURA, after being ridden forward from a wide barrier and whilst shifting in at an acute angle, in an attempt to obtain a position nearer the rail, resulting in THE GREY PANTHER, ridden by Tegan Harrison, being severely tightened for racing room and taken inwards making contact with SACRED OATH (NZ), which had a consequential effect causing SACRED OATH (NZ), ridden by R. Maloney to be tightened making heavy contact with the running rail, being severely checked and dislodging its rider.

Jockey Ben Thompson was charged and after considering the evidence and submissions was found guilty of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a). Stewards when considering penalty noted Jockey Ben Thompson’s exemplary riding record having had 489 rides since his last suspension on 16 January 2021, the degree of carelessness and the significant interference. Jockey Ben Thompson’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 4 weeks to commence at midnight the 21/03/2022 and expire at midnight the 18/04/2022. Mr Thompson was advised of his appeal rights.
