GENERAL

Stewards permitted the following weight variations for today’s meeting:
Race 8: A Allen + 1kg
 
As jockey B Loy was ill stewards permitted rider changes as per the race day summary. Mr Loy was advised he would require a medical clearance prior to next riding.
 
Trainer L Gough was fined $200 pursuant to LR 67(1) for failing to a declare a rider for SUBSTANCE engaged in race 4 by the prescribed time.
 
Race 1: GIRLS DAY OUT 4 MARCH Maiden Plate 1845 metres
 
ZELSON – Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
ENVIABLE – Shifted outwards under pressure in the home straight.
 
SILVER SPURS – Slow to begin. Improved onto heels rounding the home turn and was obliged to alter course.
 
TIRITIRI (NZ) - Shifted outwards under pressure in the home straight.
 
I PREFER MINTIES (NZ) – Slow to begin.Shifted outwards under pressure in the home straight.
 
PERSONAL FIRE (NZ) – Raced wide early.
 
CHASSAGNE – When questioned regarding the performance of the filly rider S Thornton stated that the way the race was run did not suit the filly however, she was satisfied with the finishing effort of CHASSAGNE.
 
Race 2: MOUNT FRANKLIN QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap 1200 metres
 
SIR LORD – Began awkwardly and bumped heavily with WYATT RIVER and APRIL IN AUGUSTA. Approaching the 1000m raced in restricted room between WYATT RIVER and APRIL IN AUGUSTA and was buffeted for a short distance. Leaving the 1000m was checked from the heels of APRIL IN AUGUSTA which was carried inwards by MISSION TO WIN who shifted in when insufficiently clear to do so. Jockey A Mallyon, the rider of MISSION TO WIN, was subsequently found guilty of a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) for allowing his mount to shift in at the 1000m when insufficiently clear of APRIL IN AUGUSTA resulting in that runner being forced inwards and tightening SIR LORD which had to be checked from the heels of APRIL IN AUGUSTA. The licence of A Mallyon to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days to commence midnight 13th January 2023 up to and inclusive of 21st January 2023, being free to resume riding in races on Sunday 22nd January. Mr Mallyon was advised of his right to internal review.
 
LORD GOLD – Approaching the 1000m was checked from the heels of SPIRIT QUEEN which shifted in when insufficiently clear to do so. Apprentice J Lloyd, the rider of SPIRIT QUEEN, was subsequently found guilty of a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) for allowing his mount to shift in at the 1000m when insufficiently clear of LORD GOLD resulting in that runner having to be checked from the heels of SPIRIT QUEEN. The licence of J Lloyd to ride in races was suspended for a period of 10 days to commence on midnight 13th January 2023 up to and inclusive of 23 January 2023, being free to resume riding in races on Tuesday 24th January. Mr Lloyd was advised of his right to internal review.
 
MISSION TO WIN – Laid outwards under pressure leaving the 200m. Became awkward at the heels of SPIRIT QUEEN approaching the winning post and had to be steadied.
 
RED STAR RUBI – Cast its off-hind plate.
 
APRIL IN AUGUSTA – Hampered shortly after the start. Approaching the 1000m was bumped on the hindquarters by SIR LORD and became unbalanced. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
 
WYATT RIVER – Bumped at the start. Approaching the 1000m bumped with SIR LORD for a short distance.
 
 
Race 3: 35 EUREKA STAKES GRADUATES IN 5 YEARS Class 4
Handicap 1600 metres
 
CALM SEEKER (NZ) – Over-raced leaving the 1200m. Stewards questioned rider N Evans regarding his riding of the gelding. Jockey Evans advised that connections had instructed him to secure a position with cover and not to lead. Mr Evans further added that the gelding over-raced in the middle stages and he then attempted to save ground approaching the home turn and when asked to quicken the gelding sprinted for a short distance however was one paced in its finishing effort and for this reason, he didn’t fully pressure CALM SEEKER (NZ) over the concluding stages. Stewards adjourned this matter to allow further inquires to be made regarding this race.
 
AQUA ALTA – Began awkwardly.
 
YOUNG CLIFFY – Raced wide throughout. Trainer K Jones was advised that the gelding would not be permitted to start at metropolitan venues again until, such time its form improves to a standard to be considered competitive.
 
 
Race 4: LADBROKES MARKET CONTROL Maiden Handicap 1400 metres
 
TOOLATEMATE – Raced wide throughout.
 
WRITTEN WITH BLOOD – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages and shifted wider at the 900m and raced wide with cover for the remainder. Held up leaving the 400m until the 300m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled both nostrils. As this was the second occasion WRITTEN IN BLOOD had bled from both nostrils the gelding would not be permitted to start again in any race in accordance with AR 79(6).
 
BALTRAY – Held up from the home straight until leaving the 200m.
 
RED HOT RUBIX – Steadied over the concluding stages when carried inwards by BALTRAY which shifted in and away from SUBSTANCE.
 
SPILL THE SECRET – Held up in the early stages of the home straight.
 
GLIDE ON BY – Approaching the 200 raced in restricted room after improving between into a tight run between O’CALLOGHAN and WRITTEN WITH BLOOD.
 
OUTA TAORMINA – Slow to begin.
 
SUBSTANCE – Shifted in under pressure inside the final 100m.
 
I AM PEARL – Shifted outwards under pressure leaving the 150m.
 
O'CALLOGHAN – Raced wide in the early stages. Steadied when giving ground leaving the 150m when GLIDE ON BY and I AM PEARL both shifted ground at that point.
 
DOUBLE OH SEVEN – Approaching the 200m improved onto heels and was obliged to shift wider to improve.
 
 
Race 5: ZOUSAIN FIRST YEARLINGS SELLING 2023 BENCHMARK 72 Handicap 1400 metres
 
MAJESTICS REQUEST – Jumped out at the start and bumped with MERIMEE. Approaching the 150m shifted out and away from BILLY’S BRO which was laying out.

BRIARS KINGDOM – Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.
 
SAVVY LAD (NZ) – Raced wide throughout. Steadied from the heels of MERIMEE approaching the 150m when that runner was taken outwards by MAJESTICS REQUEST.
 
BILLY'S BRO – Laid out under pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
MERIMEE – Began awkwardly and bumped with MAJESTICS REQUEST. Over-raced in the early and middle stages. Held up upon entrance to the home straight until approaching the 300m.
 
DARING BELLE – Raced wide throughout.
 
BOULT – Gave ground over the concluding stages. Trainer K Monckton was advised that the gelding would not be permitted to start at metropolitan venues again until, such time its form improves to a standard to be considered competitive.
 
Race 6: XXXX DRY QTIS Three-Year-Old BENCHMARK 68 Handicap 1000 metres
 
MISHANI WARFARE – Began awkwardly.
 
DURNSTEIN – Over-raced in the early stages. Rider B Looker dropped his whip at the 100m.
 
CLOVER'S PRINCE – Over-raced in the early stages.
 
MINKS STAR – Raced wide throughout.
 
 
Race 7: MAGIC MILLIONS BENCHMARK 68 Handicap
1000 metres
 
KING KAPA – Shifted out at the start. Shifted out under pressure approaching the winning post. Cast its near fore plate.
 
KNOCKKNEE – Raced in restricted room in the early stages of the home straight.
 
ZAVABOOM – Slow to begin.When asked to comment on the performance of the gelding, apprentice K Wilson-Taylor advised stewards that he had intentions to settle in a more forward position but after being slow to begin he was obliged to settle at the rear of the field. He further added that the gelding tended to lay out during the early and middles stages of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
ALF'S MAGIC – Bumped shortly after the start.
 
XERRI – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout.
 
THE KEWESS – Slow to begin. Held up rounding the home turn.
 
YOUR TOO GOOD – Raced wide throughout.
 
NASHIRA – Bumped shortly after the start. Steadied from the heels of KING KAPA approaching the winning post.
 
Race 8: BRC MEMBERSHIP PLUS Class 2 Handicap 1845 metre
 
BEDFORD SQUARE (NZ) – Slow to begin.
 
PATMOS ISLAND – Over-raced in the middle stages.
 
KOPANGI (NZ) – Restrained from the wide barrier to a position closer to the rail. Steadied from the heels of I PONDER approaching the 500m when that runner shifted in. Apprentice J Lloyd was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for this incident.
 
RAMOKA (NZ) – Over-raced in the middle stages.
 
WILLNOTQUIT (NZ) – Raced wide in the early stages.
