GENERAL
Following the running of race 5, apprentice C. Graham was stood down from her remaining engagements after sustaining an injury to her left foot. Rider replacements as per Meeting Summary Report.
Race 1: RACECOURSE VILLAGE QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Plate
1200 metres
HEROIC EAGLE – Blundered on jumping and as a result became unbalanced for a short distance.
SPECIALTIE – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
SPIRIT OF BRODIE – Near the 100m, shifted in and away from BIG BOY BEN when that runner rolled in slightly.
ZELGARIA – Raced keenly during the middle stages.
MONOLINK – As jockey R. Maloney was overweight, he was replaced by B.Thompson. Jockey Maloney was fined $200 pursuant to AR190(3). Slow to begin, then hampered between runners. Rider B. Thompson reported that the filly raced greenly, only travelled fairly in running and failed to respond as expected in the home straight and was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed a minor laceration to the near hindlimb.
OBEROI PRINCESS – Began awkwardly.
Race 2: GALLOPERS SPORTS CLUB Maiden Plate 1400 metres
AMERICAN PIONEER – Held up rounding home turn and early part of home straight.
TIGER FOR LIFE – Underwent a pre race veterinary examination after contacting a partition leaving the enclosure and was cleared to start. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted, apprentice K. Wilson-Taylor stated that the gelding was very agitated pre race, and after beginning well he would have preferred to take a sit, however TIGER FOR LIFE commenced to race very keenly near the 1000m, and he allowed his mount to stride forward.
DEELBREAKA – Fractious in barriers. Slow to begin.
NAVAL TRADER – Raced keenly in the early stages.
PARALLEL – Slow to begin. Held up rounding home turn and early part of home straight. Steadied from heels of HOT ROD JACK near the 1200m, obliging its rider to check and lose its position. Jockey A. Thompson pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a). Jockey Thompson’s license to ride in races was suspended for eight (8) days to commence midnight the 24/03/2023 and ending midnight the 01/04/2023.
ARTURA – Fractious in the barriers. Raced wide throughout.
LADY MATILDA – Bumped on jumping and lost ground. When asked to comment on the performance of the filly, jockey E. Chaves stated that LADY MATILDA raced very greenly and in his opinion was field shy, however, he felt that as the race progressed it let down reasonably well in the home straight, and would take benefit from the experience.
FLAWLESS AMBITION – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout. Forced wider rounding the home turn when NAVAL TRADER shifted out to improve.
Race 3: STRADBROKE SEASON ON SALE NOW QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate 1600 metres
AMERICAN JAZZ – Raced in restricted room near the 1500m when COMPASS ROSE was carried wider by runners to its inside. Shortly thereafter, AMERICAN JAZZ was steadied from the heels of MONEY MAN which was taken in by DRAGON SONG. Jockey A. Allen, rider of DRAGON SONG, was reprimanded for careless riding regarding this incident.
GOLDEN HONOUR – Near the 1500m, shifted out despite the efforts of its rider. Raced keenly early. When tiring, steadied from the heels of PSYCHIC ROSE when that runner shifted out near the 150m. Jockey S. Collett was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. Rider J. Orman, when asked to comment on the performance of the gelding, stated that after settling in a favourable position, when placed under pressure in the home straight, the gelding failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying mild heat stress.
MONEY MAN – Near the 1500m, jockey J. Huxtable was obliged to steady away from DRAGON SONG, which shifted in. Race wide throughout. Lost the off hind plate in running.
SADDLES – Bumped and carried wider when ROCK WAR shifted out to improve rounding the home turn.
CHICA LINDA – Declared a late scratching at 11.05am at the request of trainer K. Fogden for acceptable reasons.
COMPASS ROSE – Between the 1500m and the 1400m was buffeted between runners.
DOMINIQUE – Leaving the 1500m raced in restricted room. Raced very keenly in the middle stages. Apprentice C. Graham reminded of her obligations under AR131(b) to fully test her mounts out to the line.
Race 4: SKY RACING QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate 1200 metres
DAMO DAYZ – Inconvenienced near the 500m before shifting wider.
SAN LUCIDO – Slow to begin. Leaving the 500m, severely checked and lost ground.
TYCOON TORQUE – Slow to begin. Near the 900m when over racing, steadied from the heels of WITH INTENT when the pace slackened before shifting wider then resumed its position. Near the 500m, shifted in abruptly despite the efforts of its rider. Trainer S. Kendrick was advised that the gelding will be required to trial to satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing again.
WEST CORK – Over raced in the early and middle stages. Raced wide throughout. Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight.
ALABAMA GOLD – Raced wide throughout. Near the 900m, was galloped on and sustained lacerations to its off hindlimb. Trainer T. Cotsiopoulos was advised that the filly will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
PARIS AVENUE – Leaving the 1000m, steadied from heels.
STANAGE BAY – Near the 1000m, when over racing, steadied from heels and raced ungenerously for a short distance when the pace slackened. Raced wide throughout.
HEADLOCK – Slow to begin. Leaving the 500m, severely checked when TYCOON TORQUE shifted in abruptly despite the effort of its rider causing HEADLOCK to lose significant ground. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in its near hind and abrasions to both hindlimbs. A veterinary clearance will be required prior to HEADLOCK racing again.
Race 5: MOUNT FRANKLIN BENCHMARK 70 Handicap (4YO only QTIS bonuses applicable) 1200 metres
BORN A WARRIOR – Slow to begin, before contacting the heels of HIGHLAND SON and blundering.
NISHIKORI – Slow to begin. Held up for clear running between the 300m and the finishing post, and went to the line unable to be fully tested.
HIGHLAND SON – Raced in restricted room and steadied between SCHILLER BAY and LUCIFER’S REWARD, which shifted in before being corrected by its rider.
LUCIFER'S REWARD – Raced wide throughout. Bumped on several occasions rounding the home turn and became unbalanced when HIGHLAND SON was attempting to ease wider.
KOKOPO KITTY – Slow to begin.
Race 6: XXXX DRY Class 1 Handicap 1400 metres
MISTA OMEGA – Hampered on jumping.
SECURITY ADVISOR – Declared a late scratching at 3.22pm on veterinary advice. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all monies invested on SECURITY ADVISOR be paid out with the following deductions:
1st INVINCIBLE COURAGE 22c win, 10c place
2nd MISTA OMEGA 22c place
3rd AMPHAWA 30c place
INVINCIBLE COURAGE (IRE) – Began awkwardly and shifted out.
AMPHAWA – Trainer A. Chau advised of a change of tactics in that the gelding will be ridden midfield with cover if circumstances permit. Settled in a forward position with cover.
STAR CHANCE – Leaving the 1200m, when over racing, had to be steadied from heels when the pace slackened.
NANO STAR – Tightened on jumping. Over raced during the early stages when the pace slackened.
HOKE'S RUN – Began very awkwardly momentarily unbalancing its rider. Raced keenly early.
Race 7: MAGIC MILLIONS GOLD COAST MARCH 20-21 Class 1 Handicap 1000 metres
DERRY GROVE – Steadied from heels leaving the 700m. Improved onto heels and had to be steadied approaching the 450m. Passing the 200m disappointed for a run between WHAT A SHAM and LOST MEDIA, before shifting back nearer the outside to secure clear running. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.
HEMSBY – Laid out under pressure over the final 150m.
NOT ANOTHER – Post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying moderate heat stress.
LOST MEDIA – Slow to begin and blundered shortly afterwards. Raced wide throughout. Jockey S. Cormack was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip six times prior to the 100m, being one more than permitted.
SET TO SHINE – Raced wide during the middle stages.
MOTHERLODE – Fractious in the barriers. Began awkwardly and lost ground.
HELL OF A PRINCE – Slow to begin. When racing in restricted room near the 450m was further tightened, inconvenienced and lost ground.
Race 8: LADBROKES MARKET CONTROL BENCHMARK 70 Handicap 1845 metres
MAEVILA RULER – Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying signs of heat stress, and was significantly dehydrated.
JETFOIL – Raced wide until reaching a position outside the leader passing the 1300m. Rolled out under hard riding leaving the 150m. Jockey D. Thornton was advised to stop and straighten his mounts in similar circumstances.
FINSCEAL – Slow to begin.
DO WELL LEGEND – Raced keenly in the middle stages. Near the 150m, tightened and became very awkward between EVOCATOR which rolled in slightly, and JETFOIL, which rolled out under hard riding and was inconvenienced, losing its position. Jockey D. Thornton was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) for this incident.
EVOCATOR – Near the 150m, rolled in slightly before being bumped on the hindquarters and becoming unbalanced.
THE DRILLER – When asked to comment on the tactics adopted near the 700m when remaining in a one off position, rider R. Maloney stated that he was reluctant to shift wide at that point in the race, adding that it was his intention to follow KARLSTAD which had improved three deep at that point of the race. However, when KARLSTAD failed to improve from that point, he was momentarily held up rounding the home turn and finished the race off strongly. Stewards noted jockey Maloney’s comments.
Race 9: QTIS JEWEL RACEDAY 18 MARCH BENCHMARK 70 Handicap 1500 metres
SAMMY – Raced wide throughout. Near the 1300m, commenced to over race for some distance before shifting wider leaving the 1000m, then raced wide for the remainder.
AGNELLI – Leaving the 1300m, contacted the heels of TAIRUA and blundered, when that runner was restraining from the heels of SAMMY.
BUNDYANDCOKE – Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide throughout. When asked to comment, jockey M. Cahill stated that it was not his intention to race in a forward position, however after being caught wide and with the moderate tempo, he elected to allow BUNDYANDCOKE to stride forward.
AL AABIR (IRE) – Raced wide throughout. Jockey D. Thornton was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip six times prior to the 100m, being one more than permitted.
TAIRUA (NZ) – Slow to begin. Steadied from heels passing the 1300m when over racing. Held up for clear running from the home turn until a point passing the 150m. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have sustained a laceration to the off hindlimb consistent with being galloped on. Connections were advised that TAIRUA will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
MERIMEE – Held up rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight.
