Currie was also reprimanded pursuant to LR44 in that he did not furnish a letter of authority when he was unable to be present on course. Race 1: MARGOT MCKINNEY WELL GROOMED CLASS 3 PLATE 1600 Metres REDENTE CHOICE – Over raced during the early stages. TOO HARD TO REFUSE – Jockey K. Matheson was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on six (6) occasions prior to the 100m. ACROPHOBIC – Over raced during the early stages. Momentarily held up for clear running on entering the home straight. Became awkwardly placed at heels approaching the finishing line. NORTHERN DECREE (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 1100m, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of LOLLY YEATS which was carried in by KIND WISH. Jockey L. Cassidy, (rider of KIND WISH) was reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) for shifting in when not fully clear. TENZING (NZ) – Raced wide throughout. Laid out under pressure over the concluding stages. LOLLY YEATS (IRE) – Had difficulty obtaining clear running on entering the home straight until approaching the 200m. BEDFORD SQUARE (NZ) – Slow to begin. Approaching the 1000m after the pace slackened, had to be steadied off heels and over raced for a short distance thereafter. KIND WISH (NZ) – Raced wide throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. SEBRING GIRL – Apprentice B. Wheeler was fined $300 pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on six (6) occasions prior to the 100m. Race 2: SPRING CARNIVAL ON SALE NOW BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP 2412 Metres GALIFIANAKIS (IRE) – Connections advised that the gelding will be ridden further back if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly. Began awkwardly and bumped shortly afterwards. Laid out under pressure in the straight. Laid in under pressure approaching the winning post resulting in the gelding racing in restricted room over the concluding stages. Apprentice J. Molloy was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on six occasions prior to the 100m. CHERNAK (FR) – Laid out under pressure in the home straight. NAMAKWA – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying signs of the thumps. COUP DE TONNERRE – Over raced during the middle stages. Laid out over the concluding stages, bumping GALIFIANAKIS and raced in restricted room. MIGHTY WILLIE – On arrival at the barriers, had to have its tongue tie refitted. Began awkwardly. NO MORE RED – When questioned regarding the performance, apprentice B. Wheeler stated that he became concerned with the action of the gelding and elected not to pressure NO MORE RED in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer S. Morrisey was advised to report back to Stewards the condition of the gelding in the days subsequent. Race 3: SKY RACING FILLIES AND MARES BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 1400 Metres CHICKERARTIE – Knuckled on jumping dislodging its rider. Apprentice B. Wheeler was examined by the club doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements. VERY INTOXICATING – Difficult to load delaying the start. Trainer C. Anderson was advised that a warning would be placed on the barrier manners of the filly. Slow to begin. Laid out under pressure in the home straight. IRON GRACE – Raced wide during the early stages. Race 4: LUKE REYNOLDS HAIRDRESSING COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 1400 Metres DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM – Over raced during the early stages. Laid out under pressure in the home straight. EARLY THOUGHTS – Over raced during the early stages. GAIUS – Dipped shortly after the start. Hampered shortly after the start by DARK HARMONY which shifted out. Jockey M. Du Plessis pled guilty to a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) and his license to ride in races was suspended for seven days commencing at midnight the 17th of September 2023 and ending midnight the 24th of September 2023. CUSACK – Restrained from the heels of GAIUS shortly after the start. Laid out under pressure in the home straight. NAVAL TRADER – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. DARK HARMONY – Began very awkwardly. Shortly after the start, shifted out abruptly hampering GAIUS. Jockey M. Du Plessis was examined by the club doctor on returning to scale and cleared to fulfill his remaining engagements. SHADOW OF TIME – Over raced during the early stages. After being crossed by DARK HARMONY approaching the 1000m, commenced to hang out. Trainer J. Holcombe was advised that a warning will be placed on the racing manners of the gelding. Mr Holcombe advised Stewards that it was the stable’s likely intention to retire the gelding. Race 5: EUREKA STUD BENCHMARK 85 HANDICAP 1810 Metres FIFTH POSITION (IRE) – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. WAIRERE FALLS (NZ) – Raced wide throughout. HOLSTEIN – When asked to comment on the performance, jockey A. Mallyon stated that when asked for an effort HOLSTEIN failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion, felt flat in its finishing effort. Trainer M. Dunn stated that it was his intention to assess the gelding on return to his stable, however all being well, it was his intention to continue on with the preparation. BEAUFORT PARK – Slow to begin. Over raced during the early stages. Had difficulty obtaining clear running on entering the home straight. Approaching the 300m was disappointed for a run between AQUA ALTA and FIFTH POSITION and was obliged to shift in to secure clear running. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages. MENAZZI – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. AQUA ALTA – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. KHAALIS (IRE) – Connections advised of a change of tactics in that the gelding will be ridden further back with cover if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly. Obliged to alter course passing the 200m to improve. MASTER MARKO (NZ) – Raced wide during the early stages until approaching the 1100m. Race 6: LGT CRESTONE CUP NO METRO WINS HANDICAP 1200 Metres LORD MARKEL (NZ) – Slow to begin. ZINGALONG – Bumped on jumping. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. BARISTASISTA – Over raced during the middle stages. Approaching the 600m, became awkwardly placed on the heels of LE MELODY, and as a result had to shift wider. SWAMP NATION – Slow to begin. Passing the 200m, became awkwardly placed on the heels of LORD MARKEL which laid in under pressure. THE KEWESS – Began awkwardly and bumped ZINGALONG. On return to scale, jockey A. Jones stated that THE KEWESS travelled well throughout but was disappointing in its finishing effort. She added that in her opinion, the gelding may have resented racing in between horses. A post race veterinary examination revealed minor abrasions to the shoulder and stifle. Race 7: RIDGMONT FARM QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 1000 Metres MISS COOTA – Began awkwardly and bumped SHOW ME MERCY. Over raced during the early stages. Raced wide throughout. Bumped entering the home straight by SHOW ME MERCY which shifted out to improve. SHOW ME MERCY – Held up for clear running on entering the home straight before shifting wider to improve. MINTO'S D'ORO – Laid out under pressure in the home straight. SONNY DAZE – Bumped on jumping. Laid out rounding the home turn. BORRELLI – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped SONNY DAZE. TANGO FEVER – As jockey M. McGillivray was indisposed he was replaced by jockey B. Spriggs. TANGO FEVER was declared a late scratching at 3.35pm when the filly refused to load. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all bets on TANGO FEVER be refunded with the following deductions to apply: 1st INSTAGOOD 1c win, 6c place2nd BORRELLI 6c place3rd SHOW ME MERCY 2c place Trainer’s representative M. Sharpe was advised that TANGO FEVER will be required to obtain two further consecutive barrier certificates with at least one of these being an official barrier trial prior to racing again. SZABO – Began awkwardly. Apprentice M. Castle reported that the filly wanted to hang throughout. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. VENTURER – Became awkward on heels shortly after the start. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. INSTAGOOD – Laid out under pressure in the home straight. Race 8: PEACHESTER LODGE CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1000 Metres OSAMU – Over raced during the early stages. Laid out under pressure in the home straight. GEMELON BOLT – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Approaching the 100m, became awkwardly placed on the heels of OSAMU which laid out. HARD TO SAY – Bumped on jumping. Laid out under pressure in the home straight. SHAMATON – Held up for clear running on entering the home straight, then raced in restricted room for a number of strides between NASHIRA and GEMELON BOLT. RED RUBI – Slow to begin. HOLD ON HONEY – Bumped on jumping. Race 9: LADBROKE IT! QTIS BENCHMARK 85 HANDICAP (4YO ONLY QTIS BONUSES APPLICABLE) 1500 Metres INDISPENSABLE – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. THE RITZ – Slow to begin. EAGLEMONT (IRE) – Slow to begin. STAR OF CHAOS – When questioned regarding the early tempo set, jockey A. Jones stated that she had to ride the mare in the early stages to cross and obtain a position in the lead from the wide gate. She added that after crossing to lead approaching the 1200m, she commenced to try to restrain her mount as she was mindful of the fast early tempo, but after the mare resented her attempts, she elected to allow her mount to travel where comfortable rather than overly restraining, which in her opinion would have resulted in the mare over racing. Stewards noted Ms Jones’ comments. VIMINELE – When asked to comment on the performance, jockey G. Cartwright stated that in her opinion, the horse may have come to the end of its preparation.
