Stewards approved the following overweights.
Race 2 - Mark Du Plessis plus 1/2kg at 52.5kg.
Race 9 – Andrew Mallyon plus 1/2kg at 56kg.
Race 6 Trainer J. Edwards was fined $200 pursuant LR 68(1) for failing to scratch THE LOVE ROCKET by the prescribed time.
Race 1: LADBROKES ODDS SURGE BENCHMARK 80 HANDICAP 2200M
FIFTH POSITION (IRE) – Brushed approaching the 300m by LITTLE MIX. Taken inwards approaching the 200m by LITTLE MIX. Rider R. Maloney was advised to stop and straighten his mount when they commence to shift under pressure in future. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
SAVVY LAD (NZ) – When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey M. McGuren advised it wasn’t his intention to lead by such a distance, however the gelding over raced in the early and middle stages. He also added the gelding raced somewhat flat and may benefit from a spell. Trainer T Newing confirmed he would now consider spelling the gelding.
NAMAKWA – Shifted out on jumping. Rider B. Spriggs reported in his opinion the gelding was not suited by the way the race was run and failed to get into a comfortable rhythm at any stage, proving disappointing in its finishing effort. Trainer R. Heathcote advised Stewards he would consider a drop back in distance for the gelding at its next start. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
ENUFF HE SAID – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
OSTERMEIER – Over raced approaching the 1900m. Obliged to alter course outwards to improve approaching the 350m.
LITTLE MIX – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 300m, laid in and brushed FIFTH POSITION. Laid in under pressure approaching the 200m.
CRAIGLEA KARLY – Began awkwardly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have a slow post-race recovery. Stewards advised trainer G. Gatti that a warning would be placed on the mare for a poor performance.
Race 2: NOVA 106.9 QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP 1000M
PARTY FOR TWO – Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.
GOLDEN DECADE – Contacted the barrier partition on jumping, became unbalanced and lost ground.
UPSTART LEGEND – Became awkward in its action approaching the 600m and lost ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed mild heat stress.
SZABO – Near the 700m, had to be steadied for a number of strides when racing keenly at the heels of PARTY FOR TWO.
BENNU – Slow to begin.
Race 3: KOBAYASHI AT AQUIS QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP 1000M
The start of this race was delayed after MYTHBUSTA blundered on entrance to the course proper, dislodging rider B. Thornton. MYTHBUSTA then galloped for some distance before being recaptured and was subsequently declared a late scratching at 12:48pm by Stewards, acting on veterinary advice.
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards declared all monies invested on MYTHBUSTA to be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st place – 9c win, 15c place.
2nd place – 8c
3rd place – 6c
The start was further delayed when MISHANI VOLTAGE cast its off fore plate on route to the barriers and required farrier attention.
Prior to the declaration of correct weight and on review of the film, Jockey J. Huxtable rider of BOOMROUX, placed 3rd and in the presence of trainer C. Munce lodged a protest against the 2nd place getter, MISHANI ROCK ridden by L. Tilley for alleged interference near the 300m. Stewards on review of the objection and considering the evidence tendered by all parties, noted that whilst MISHANI ROCK did lay in towards BOOMROUX resulting in that horse being taken in marginally near the 300m, Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that this incident warranted a reversal in placings and declared correct weight on the judges numbers.
MISHANI ROCK – Fractious in the barriers. Raced wide throughout. Laid in when placed under pressure from the home turn up until the 100m. Jockey L. Tilley reported at scale that the gelding raced greenly in the home straight and recommended to connections that the addition of blinkers.
BOOMROUX – Slow to begin.
MISHANI BRAZILIAN – Raced greenly when approaching the 800m and became unbalanced. Stewards advised trainer L. Ross that MISHANI BRAZILIAN would not be permitted to race until the gelding improves its trackability and competitiveness.
PRIDE OF SAVABELLA – Began very awkwardly and lost ground.
MISHANI INVINCIBLE – Raced greenly near the 600m when awkwardly placed at heels.
MISHANI SUSPECT – Raced greenly when placed under pressure in the home straight.
MISHANI VOLTAGE – Raced wide throughout. Approaching the 300m, carried inwards and had to be momentarily steadied from the heels of MISHANI ROCK which laid in under pressure. L. Tilley rider of MISHANI ROCK was advised to show greater care in similar circumstances.
MISHANI ECLIPSE – Approaching the 200m was momentarily steadied when BOOMROUX shifted out to improve and MISHANI VOLTAGE was taken in by MISHANI ROCK.
After being dislodged, Jockey B. Thornton was examined by the club doctor and was cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.
Race 4: THIS IS CROSER BENCHMARK 75 HANDICAP 1600M
O'MUDGEE (NZ) – Restrained from a wide barrier to find a position closer to the rail.
HYDE – Raced wide early. Raced keenly in the middle stages. Laid in rounding the home turn. Bumped on the hind quarters and became unbalanced. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Apprentice C. Graham stated her mount over raced in the early stages and failed to quicken in the home straight and proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery and to be exhibiting clinical signs of the thumps.
ACROPHOBIC – Restrained from a wide barrier to find a position closer to the rail. Over raced in the middle stages.
ATON OF DELIGHT – Restrained from a wide barrier to find a position closer to the rail. Approaching the 200m improved onto a tiring runner’s heels and had to be steadied.
PHAISTOS – Raced wide throughout.
TITANIUM – Slow to begin. Held up rounding the home turn up until a point approaching the 200m.
SHEZA FIRECRACKER – Bumped rounding the home turn. Eased down over the final 100m. Jockey M. Harley reported post-race that the mare was inclined to lay out over the final 600m, proving difficult to ride. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying lameness in its off foreleg. Trainer L. Birchley was advised SHEZA FIRECRACKER would require a veterinary clearance prior to resuming racing. Trainer L. Birchley advised Stewards it was now his intention to send the mare to a spell.
Race 5: EVA AIR CLASS 3 PLATE 1300M
BOODUA ROMANCE – Hampered on jumping. Over raced in the early stages. Approaching the 800m when over racing had to be steadied from heels.
JIMMY'S DREAM – Slow to begin. Approaching the 800m when over racing had to be steadied from heels.
MICRO – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Over raced in the early stages. Approaching the 900m had to be steadied when awkwardly placed at the heels of PAIENBARA. Approaching the 800m when over racing had to be steadied from heels. At the 400m had to be steadied from the heels of PAIENBARA when that runner shifted in after bumping with APRIL IN AUGUSTA. Raced in restricted room approaching the 200m, laid in and had to be steadied from the heels of BOODUA ROMANCE. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying lameness in its off foreleg. Trainer D. Groves was advised MICRO would require a veterinary clearance prior to resuming.
BULLION BOY – Shifted out on jumping. Held up rounding the home turn and had difficulty obtaining clear running until a point passing the 200m. After leaving the 100m had to be momentarily steadied from the heels of ARGYLE PINK.
PAIENBARA – Shifted out leaving the 400m and contacted the hind quarters of APRIL IN AUGUSTA. A short distance later when awkwardly placed at the heels of MISS TAMBO, PAIENBARA again contacted APRIL IN AUGUSTA and became unbalanced.
ZAHER (NZ) – Jockey B. Thompson reported it wasn’t his intention to settle in such a forward position however after beginning well he elected to allow the gelding to stride forward rather than being caught wide in the early stages.
APRIL IN AUGUSTA – Raced wide throughout. Bumped on the hind quarters leaving the 400m and a short distance later was again contacted on the hind quarters and became unbalanced.
SEA RIPPLE – Began awkwardly, hampered shortly after the start and lost ground. Raced in restricted room approaching the 1100m.
YES TO EXCESS – Raced wide throughout. Rider B. Spriggs advised he was unable to secure a position with cover and as a result, he was obliged to race three wide for the remainder of the event.
MISS TAMBO – Raced wide throughout.
ASCOT EXPRESS (NZ) – As M. McGillivray was indisposed, stewards permitted J. Bayliss as the replacement rider for the gelding. Over raced in the early stages.
Race 6: CANADIAN CLUB BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP 1600M
The start of this event was slightly delayed after VERY INTOXICATING refused to load and was subsequently declared a late scratching at 2:36pm.
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards declared all monies invested on VERY INTOXICATING to be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st place – 7c win, 9c place.
2nd place – 13c
3rd place – 14c
Trainer C. Anderson was advised that VERY INTOXICATING would require a barrier certificate prior to racing again.
BETTER NOT BITTER (IRE) – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after contacting the rail leaving the enclosure and was cleared to start. Began awkwardly bumping with MISSION OF LOVE. Jockey S. Cormack advised Stewards at scale that his mount had a tendency to race keenly which he attributed to the addition of blinkers.
FLYING JOY – Began awkwardly. Improved onto heels approaching the winning post and had to be steadied.
ELIZANO – Raced wide for the majority. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
RISING PACIFIC (NZ) – Steadied from heels shortly after the start.
TAIRUA (NZ) – Raced wide early. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
MISSION OF LOVE – Bumped at the start. Improved onto heels approaching the 150m and had to be steadied. Approaching the 50m when attempting to secure a run to the inside of DESERT MIST and FLYING JOY was disappointed and had to be steadied. When questioned regarding the performance of MISSION OF LOVE, Jockey J. Lloyd stated that the mare settled in a rearward position as its usual pattern and at a point approaching the 900m, he endeavoured to improve his position to follow ESKY (NZ) however, the mare failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure and was flat footed when asked for an effort approaching the home turn. He further added that the mare did not feel entirely comfortable in its action in the home straight, adding that he was of the opinion that another runner may have contacted the off hind leg of MISSION OF LOVE in the early stages of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities but did reveal the off hind plate to have been significantly shifted and also to have cast the off fore plate.
DESERT MIST – Over raced approaching the 1100m.
ESKY (NZ) – Hampered shortly after the start.
Race 7: XXXX CLASS 3 PLATE 1000M
EXTRA FLASH – Slow to begin.
THE FACE – Jockey J. Huxtable reported that in his opinion the gelding did not appreciate todays racing surface. A post-race veterinary examination revealed gelding to have a slight cough and slow recovery. Trainer D. Vandyke advised he would have his stable veterinarian examine the gelding and would advise stewards of any findings.
CASROCK – Trainer K. Schweida advised a change of tactics and CASROCK would be ridden less forward if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly.
LIQUOR – Began awkwardly.
After the running of race 7, the track was upgraded to a Good 3 retrospectively.
Race 8: SKY RACING OPEN HANDICAP 1000M
ZOUSHACK – Began awkwardly. Held up rounding the home turn.
CIFRADO – Checked and lost ground shortly after the start when tightened between YOU’LL BE MISSED and OSAMU.
EASY SINGLE – Raced wide throughout.
YOU'LL BE MIST – Began very awkwardly resulting in rider J. Lloyd’s shoulder making heavy contact with the barrier partition. Approaching the 300m was obliged to alter course to secure clear running. Jockey J. Lloyd was assessed by the club doctor after the running of race 8 and was subsequently stood down for his remaining rides. J. Lloyd was advised he would require a medical clearance prior to resuming riding.
DITMAS – Eased down in the home straight by its rider due to concerns with the gelding’s action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a significant injury to the gelding’s off fore superficial digital flexor tendon and was treated by the on course veterinary official. Trainer M. Eggleston was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to racing again.
HAKKAI MARU – Laid out rounding the home turn.
NASHIRA – Raced wide throughout.
LIME SODA – Raced wide in the early stages until the 700m.
Race 9: DRINKWISE CLASS 6 PLATE 1200M
SIR WARWICK – Began awkwardly and bumped with NATIONAL CHOICE. Held up approaching the 250m. Bumped heavily at the winning post.
IRING – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was subsequently cleared to start. Carried in at the start and bumped with NATIONAL CHOICE. Approaching the winning post shifted in and bumped heavily for a number of strides with ZUMA CALIFORNIA.
ZUMA CALIFORNIA – Approaching the 200m was bumped by EKATERINA. Approaching the winning post, shifted out marginally and bumped with IRING for a number of strides causing the gelding to become unbalanced.
EKATERINA – Held up entering the home straight until improving into a narrow run approaching the 200m between ZUMA CALIFORNIA and GLORIOUS RUBY.
NATIONAL CHOICE – Bumped shortly after the start by IRING which was carried inwards by MY SNOW QUEEN. Over raced in the early stages.
GLORIOUS RUBY – Approaching the 200m was bumped by EKATERINA.
KIR ROYALE – Began awkwardly. Raced wide until approaching the 800m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in its off foreleg. Trainers representative B. Killion was advised KIR ROYALE would require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
TWICE AS SPECIAL – Slow to begin.
Race 10: ROAD TO MAGIC MILLIONS ON SALE NOW BENCHMARK 80 HANDICAP 1400M
ROUSSEAU – Slow to begin. Approaching the 1000m raced keenly and had to be steadied from heels. Leaving the 800m had to be checked to avoid ARNAQUEUR when that runner went amiss.
SIR ROCKET – Hampered shortly after the start. Raced wide throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
HEAD OF STATE – Approaching the 1100m raced keenly and had to be steadied from heels. Leaving the 800m had to be checked to avoid ARNAQUEUR when that runner went amiss.
MIYAKE – Began awkwardly and shifted inwards. Raced wide throughout.
ARNAQUEUR – Leaving the 800m, faulted in its action and was retired from the event. A veterinary inspection revealed a compound fracture of the near foreleg. The gelding was subsequently humanely euthanised and postmortem samples were taken.
OUR MAGNUS – Jockey G. Geran was reprimanded pursuant to AR 132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip 6 times prior to the 100m.
DARK HARMONY – Shifted out shortly after the start.
SWAMP NATION – Crowded and had to be steadied rounding the home turn when carried wider by OUR MAGNUS which shifted out to improve. Jockey G. Geran rider of OUR MAGNUS was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for the manner in which he shifted ground rounding the home turn.
VETTA VELOCITA – Slow to begin and hampered shortly after the start. Raced wide for the majority. Jockey J. Bayliss reported his mount had a tendency to over race in the early stages. Jockey J. Bayliss was reminded of his obligations in regard to raising his whip above shoulder height.
AQUA ALTA – Obliged to shift wider leaving the 400m.
KUDU – Leaving the 400m became awkwardly placed at the heels of DARK HARMONY and shifted outwards.
