GENERAL
 
Stewards approved the following overweight allowances at today’s meeting:
 
Race 1- ICED CHOCOLATE – J. Orman +0.5kg (56.5kg)
Race 4- PRINCESS KAGUYA – J. Orman +0.5kg (56.5kg)
Race 8- KASEAR – J. Stanley +1kg (55kg)
Race 9- SHY GUY – J. Orman +0.5kg (56.5kg)
 
As jockey V. Duric was ill and not riding at today’s meeting, rider replacements were made as per the Stewards summary. Jockey V. Duric was advised that he would require a medical certificate prior to next race riding.
 
Trainer’s representative for C. Waller was advised that a fine of $200 would be imposed pursuant to LR36(6)(a) for failing to scratch dual accepter OMIKAMI by the prescribed time.
 
The track was downgraded to a heavy 8 at 10:34am.
 
Race 1: RACECOURSE VILLAGE Maiden Plate 1000 metres
 
SUPIDO ROSE – Declared a late scratching at 10:05am on veterinary advice. Trainer L. Gough was advised that the mare would require a veterinary certificate prior to next racing.
 
CAXTON LASS – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination behind the barriers when a small amount of blood was present in its mouth and was cleared to start.
 
CHERMSIDE – Raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly obtained an injury to its near-fore tendon. Trainers representative was advised that the filly would require a veterinary certificate prior to next racing.
 
DEEP VEGAS – Raced wide throughout. Jockey A. Jones reported in her opinion the filly did not appreciate todays track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
DIVINE GEM – Raced wide throughout. Approaching the 500m, shifted in abruptly making heavy contact with DIVINE GEM. Laid in approaching the 250m.
 
ICED CHOCOLATE – Raced greenly when placed under pressure in the home straight.
 
ISLE ORNSAY – Raced wide throughout. Approaching the 500m, bumped heavily and became unbalanced when DIVINE GEM shifted in abruptly. Approaching the 250m, raced in restricted room and steadied when DIVINE GEM laid in when racing greenly.
 
HEARTS ARE RACING – Approaching the 500m, heavily bumped and became unbalanced when ISLE ORNSAY was bumped and carried in by DIVINE GEM. Approaching the 250m, steadied from the heels of FAST FUSION.
 
FAST FUSION – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
 
Race 2: TEDDY BEARS PICNIC 3 AUGUST QTIS Three-Year-Old Fillies
Maiden Plate 1400 metres
 
AMATERASU – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 700m, bumped by SHOW ME THE STARS which momentarily shifted out after improving onto heels.
 
CLIODHNA MAEVE (NZ) – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn and approaching the 300m was obliged to steady from heels and shift wider to secure clear running. Jockey M. Rodd reported the filly may not have appreciated todays track conditions.
 
COSMIC BEAUTY – Began awkwardly.
 
DASHING HOPE – Began awkwardly. Jockey N. Beriman reported that it was not her intention to settle in a forward position, however after beginning well and being caught wide, she allowed her mount to stride forward and obtained the leading position near the 800m.
 
HURRICANE HARLOW – Leaving the 1300m, bumped by CLIODHNA MAEVE which shifted out. When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance, trainer G. Thornton stated that at its most recent start, the filly was caught wide throughout and with the addition of blinkers for first time this start, he had expected a forward showing.
 
IT'SALLSAIDANDONE – Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 700m, improved onto heels and shifted out.
 
OMIKAMI – Change of tactics, to be ridden further forward if circumstances permit. Began awkwardly, hampered between runners and settled at the rear of the field. Taken wider near the 700m, when IT’SALLSAIDANDONE shifted out after improving onto heels. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
SHOW ME THE STARS – Near the 700m, improved onto heels and had to be steadied.
 
Following the running of race 2, the track was downgraded to a heavy 9.
 
Race 3: LADBROKES RACING CLUB QTIS Three-Year-Old Colts and
Geldings Maiden Pl 1400 metres
 
KEEP SAFE – Began awkwardly. Disappointed for a run to the inside of SMOKE ‘N’ OAKUM approaching the 100m before shifting across heels to secure clear running.
 
LIETUVA – Began awkwardly. Leaving the 600m, bumped by ANACARDIUM which shifted out.  Jockey J. Orman reported that it was his intention to settle more forward but after beginning awkwardly the gelding failed to show speed. He stated that the gelding travelled fairly  throughout the event, but after receiving a bump leaving the 600m, didn’t travel from that point onwards. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities  
 
MEAT PIE ARTIE – Began awkwardly. Laid in when placed under pressure over the final 200m.
 
MIDNIGHT MADNESS – Leaving the 600m, put in an awkward stride.
 
VICTORY COMMAND (NZ) – Laid in leaving the 100m, obliging its rider to have to stop and correct his mount.
 
ANACARDIUM – Leaving the 600m, shifted out abruptly, bumped LIETUVA, which resulted in rider N. Beriman becoming unbalanced in the saddle.
 
Following this race, jockey N. Callow reported he was feeling unwell and was assessed by the club doctor and deemed unfit to fulfil his remaining engagement. Jockey N. Callow was advised that he would require a medical certificate prior to next race riding.
 
Race 4: CASCADE Maiden Plate 1600 metres
 
HURACANEVO – Tightened for room and taken in near the 900m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
NATIONAL INTEREST – Jockey S. Collett reported the horse wasn’t suited by the slow pace in the early and middle stages and is better suited to racing on firmer tracks.
 
SMELTER (IRE) – Laid in throughout the event.
 
ALL ABOUT ARTIE – Began awkwardly. Laid in near the 100m, obliging MISS DYNAMO to steady.
 
EASTOWN – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
 
EXPRESS PAYMENT – Declared a late scratching at 12:23pm due to the downgrade of the track.
 
GAVIN – Jockey A. Jones reported that with blinkers on first time, the gelding settled further forward.
 
CALL ME CRAZY (NZ) – Hampered between runners shortly after the start.
 
MISS DYNAMO – Near the 100m, obliged to steady when ALL ABOUT ARTIE laid in.
 
SUNCHELLE – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Checked near the 900m. At a subsequent inquiry, jockey R. Maloney the rider of EXPOSITION pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in that near the 900m, when attempting to restrain to find cover, made insufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting in, tightening the running of HURACANEVO (M. Rodd), which was taken in onto the running of SUNCHELLE (M. Castle), resulting in that runner having to be checked on the fence to avoid the heels of HURACANEVO and ultimately lost it position. Jockey Maloney’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days to commence midnight the 6th of July 2024 and to expire midnight the 14th of July 2024. When determining penalty, Stewards considered jockey Maloney’s good record in relation to this rule and guilty plea.
 
Race 5: XXXX BENCHMARK 70 Handicap 1200 metres
 
HURTS SO GOOD – Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
BLUESTONE LANE – Began awkwardly.
 
THE KEWESS – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
 
SUPER DUCK – Began very awkwardly, almost dislodging its rider and as a result lost significant ground. Raced keenly approaching the 800m.
 
GOOD LIEUTENANT – Checked near the 150m. At a subsequent inquiry, jockey N. Beriman the rider of YES TO EXCESS pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in that near the 150m whilst being ridden along, failed to make sufficient effort to prevent her mount from shifting out into the rightful running of GOOD LIEUTENANT (R. Dolan) which was obliged to be checked to avoid the heels of YES TO EXCESS. Jockey Beriman’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days to commence midnight the 6th of July 2024 and to expire midnight the 14th of July 2024. When determining penalty, Stewards considered jockey N. Beriman’s good record in relation to this rule and guilty plea.
 
YES TO EXCESS – Began awkwardly. Shifted out under pressure over the final 200m. Jockey N. Beriman dropped her whip near the 50m.
 
Following this race, Apprentice M. Potgieter reported he had some muscle soreness in his shoulder and was assessed by the club doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.
 
Race 6: THE GIBSON Class 6 Plate 1400 metres
 
BOLD BOURBON (NZ) – Over raced in the early and middle stages.
 
BEAN FOGGY – Raced wide throughout.
 
HE'S HEAVEN – Began awkwardly. Over raced in the early and middle stages. Had difficulty obtaining clear running from the 200m until approaching the 100m. Raced in restricted room over the concluding stages.
 
IRING – Slow to begin.
 
Race 7: COUNTRY MUSIC RACEDAY ON SALE NOW Class 2 Handicap
1300 metres
 
BILLIONAIR BABY – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 900m, over raced at the heels of PONCA (E. Lang) and had to be steadied when the pace of the race was slackened. Apprentice E. Lang was reprimanded pursuant to AR131(d) for excessively slowing the pace of the race.
 
BATTLEFIELD – Laid out under pressure over the final 50m.
 
PONCA – Apprentice E. Lang reported that her mount did not appreciate todays track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Apprentice E. Lang pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that she used the whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m (13 strikes totality). Apprentice E. Lang’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 days to commence midnight the 6th of July 2024 and to expire midnight the 13th of July 2024.
 
NOBLE BEAUTY – Declared a late scratching at 12:42pm due to the downgrade of the track.
 
HALLSIDE MARTINI – Slow to begin.
 
STAR CHANCE – Jockey A. Thompson reported that his mount did not appreciate todays track conditions. Weakened over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
Race 8: SKY RACING Class 2 Handicap 1300 metres
 
The start of this race was delayed when AMERICAN PHIREBALL required farrier attention on arrival at the barriers after casting its off-hind plate in the enclosure. AMERICAN PHIREBALL underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. NEOCLASSICISM also on arrival at the barriers required to be re-saddled. The start was further delayed when DEEP RESPECT refused to load and was declared a late scratching at 4:10pm. Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on DEEP RESPECT be refunded with the following deductions to apply –  
 
1st place – 38c win, 20c place
2nd place – 25c place
3rd place – 30c place
 
Trainer K. Schweida was advised that the gelding would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate prior to resuming racing.
 
RUSSIAN MYSTIC – Began awkwardly.
 
PAIENBARA – Slow to begin.
 
AMERICAN PHIREBALL – Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
NEOCLASSICISM – Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
Race 9: MEKKA RACEDAY 17 AUGUST BENCHMARK 70 Handicap
1600 metres
 
HECTOR DE MARIS (IRE) – Bumped on jumping.
 
FUN SPONGE – Approaching the winning post, was inconvenienced and changed strides when racing between NEW LEVEL (R. Maloney) and PATMOS ISLAND (M. Potgieter) which shifted out Apprentice M. Potgieter was severely reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) for permitting his mount to shift out under riding.
 
PATMOS ISLAND – Shifted out over the concluding stages.
 
SEBRING GIRL – Shifted out on jumping and bumped HECTOR DE MARIS. Steadied near the 800m when the pace of the race slackened.
 
YANGARI – Began awkwardly, shifted out and lost significant. Raced wide throughout.
 
SHY GUY – Declared a late scratching at 2:40pm due to the downgrade of the track.
 
IMARICHGIRL (NZ) – In the early stages of the home straight improved onto the heels of the tiring HECTOR DE MARIS and then had some difficulty obtaining clear running.
 
CONDRIEU – Raced wide throughout.
 
TANNENBURG – Declared a late scratching at 2:40pm due to the downgrade of the track.
 
IRON GRACE – Held up approaching the home turn.
