SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
Sunshine Coast 9.6.24 – Race 5
Stewards have concluded an inquiry into the tactics adopted on MINTAKA LAD by Jockey K Wilson-Taylor. Evidence provided by Jockey Wilson-Taylor indicated that he was mindful that the horse was racing over 1600m for the first time and that he did not wish to overly restrain the horse for fear of disrupting the horses breathing. Jockey Wilson-Taylor further stated that he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position from the wide barrier, however had not realised that he had established such a significant lead during the middle stages. Trainer D Vandyke advised stewards that prior to the event, following discussions with K Wilson-Taylor, he had anticipated that the horse would lead, however was surprised that MINTAKA LAD established such a significant lead during the middle stages. Furthermore, with hindsight this may not have been the right decision, and he would have preferred for the horse to have been ridden with slower sectionals. Stewards examined available betting information, which did not uncover any activity of concern. Stewards also analysed the sectional times of MINTAKA LAD, which supported that the tempo set by the gelding, during the first 1000m, was higher than would normally be expected in a 1600m race at this venue. Stewards found that Jockey Wilson-Taylor had made an error in judgement in that he had failed to attempt to place more restraint on MINTAKA LAD between the 1200m and the 600m, as he had misjudged the lead that he had established during this portion of the event. The available sectional times establish, in the Steward’s opinion, that whilst Jockey Wilson-Taylor erred during this section of the event, they do not support that this error was so unreasonable to render him culpable under the rules. Stewards are not satisfied that, given MINTAKA LAD was having its first start over 1600m, had Jockey Wilson-Taylor ridden the horse with more restrained during the early and middle stages the horse would have finished in a better position and for these reasons intend taking no further action.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
