SUPPLEMENTARY

Doomben 13 July 2024 Race 2
Stewards finalized an inquiry regarding the tactics adopted on PLUNDERING by jockey J. Guthmann-Chester rounding the home turn. After taking evidence on the day from rider Guthmann-Chester along with trainer’s representative T. Pollard, stewards adjourned the matter to allow them to review the geldings racing history along with a review of wagering relative to the race. Nothing of concern was found upon wagering analysis. Jockey Guthmann gave evidence on the day that he had considered improving to the outside of TOO HARD TO REFUSE approaching the 400m however he elected to follow BRERETON, as he felt that he would be able to secure a run to the inside of TOO HARD TO REFUSE upon entering the home straight. He further added that he was surprised that TOO HARD TO REFUSE didn’t give ground in the home straight as he had anticipated, and this resulted in PLUNDERING being held up until leaving the 200m. Jockey Guthmann-Chester advised stewards that in hindsight it would have been a better option to have improved to the outside of TOO HARD TO REFUSE rounding the home turn which would have availed him to an uninterrupted run in the home straight. Stewards agreed with Jockey Guthmann-Chester that he had erred by not shifting to the outside of TOO HARD TO RESFUSE approaching the home turn, however they were not of the opinion that his riding at this point of the race was culpable to a charge under the rules and took the matter no further.

Race 1: TEDDY BEARS PICNIC 3 AUGUST CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1200 M

DAYTONA – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. When asked to comment on the performance rider J Orman could offer no explanation other than the gelding may not have been suited ridden in a more forward position today.A post-race veterinary examination revealed an upper respiratory noise. Trainers’ representative for T Gollan was advised DAYTONA would require a veterinary clearance inclusive of a satisfactory endoscopic examination prior to racing again.

SPIRIT QUEEN – Hampered when crowded at the start. Raced keenly for a short distance in the early stages when being restrained to obtain cover.

SOUTHERN STOCK – Shifted out passing the winning post on the first occasion passing the 1900m, taking COUP DE TONNERRE wider on the track. Continued to be ridden forward from that point and obtained the lead near the 1200 metres. When asked to comment on tactics adopted, rider K Wilson-Taylor stated instructions were to put the gelding into the race if an opportunity were to arise, adding that whilst he left  a rearward trailing position and progressed forward and put SOUTHERN STOCK into the race earlier than he planned on this occasion, he was of the opinion this would not be disadvantageous given in the past SOUTHERN STOCK had been ridden in a similar manner. Trainer S Kendrick advised instructions were to race in a forward position if possible as SOUTHERN STOCK is a one-paced type, adding that he was surprised when the horse was ridden forward as early in the race as it was on this occasion.    Stewards, in considering the matter, advised jockey Wilson-Taylor he should have permitted his mount to maintain the position with cover in the early stages of the race to allow him a greater opportunity to assess the pace of the race as per the instructions issued, rather than allowing SOUTHERN STOCK to be ridden in the manner it was today.
