STEWARDS PANEL: Mr R. Sanders (Chairman), Mr A. Reardon, Mr C. McLune, Mr W. Flynn, Mr C. Waller (Cadet).
WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD
RACE 1: CARLTON MID STRENGTH H'CAP - 800M.
Trainer P. Moody was fined $25 for failing to advise the use of blinkers for MISS FIREBALL.
SOOBENHAAGEN and DREAM TRAP were slow to begin.
MY SHEILA was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
Over the concluding stages, SIR VO (A. Pattillo) shifted out abruptly under pressure and made contact with MY SHEILA (D. Craven), dislodging both A. Pattillo and D. Craven. Trainer J. Canavan was advised that SIR VO would be required to barrier trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start. As A. Pattillo and D. Craven were indisposed as a result of this incident, the following riding replacements were approved: Race 3. TOP PLUME - J. Stanley; Race 4. MISHA'S PEACE - D. Tanti.
RACE 2: CARLTON DRAUGHT H'CAP - 800M.
As M. Dracos failed to arrive on course, stewards permitted M. Carson to be substituted as the rider of MAGICAL MAN.
NEIGH HIGH jumped awkwardly at the start and lost ground.
RACE 3: SOUTHERN QUEENSLAND PLUMBING H'CAP - 1450M.
As R. Goltz was indisposed, M Carson was substituted as the rider of KILBRANNAN, and P. Lindeberg as the rider of CORIOLANUS (Race 5).
THE LANKY YANK and TOP PLUME were slow to begin.
STAR GAMBLER was hampered by KILBRANNAN, which shifted in near the 300m..
THE LANKY YANK, which bled from both nostrils during the event, will be barred from racing for the mandatory period of 3 months.
RACE 4: VALLEY TAXIS H'CAP - 1460M.
As S. Shield failed to arrive on course in time, B. Swanton was substituted as the rider of GAVRALAC.
After being slow to begin, RULING PLANET raced wide in the early and middle stages of the event.
K. Yoshida, rider of SICALOU, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1200m. he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of RENDERED, resulting in that gelding being taken in, causing SQUAWABLE to be checked.. K. Yoshida was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 23 February, and to expire at midnight, 7 March 2002.
Near the 450m., RENDERED shifted out to improve around the heels of GAVRALAC, and in doing so made contact with JUST LIKE ALI.
At the entrance to the straight, ORBITING STAR shifted out under pressure and brushed SICALOU.
Near the 200m., M. Carson's left foot became dislodged from the stirrup iron on RENDERED, placing that rider at a disadvantage.
RACE 5: NIKKI SIMPSON H'CAP - 1200M.
Trainer S. Kumpikas was fined $25 for presenting PAC OF PRIDE with the incorrect gear.
TAUNT was slow to begin.
Approaching the 600m., IL PALIO, which was racing ungenerously, had to be steadied off the heels of A BLUE BIJOU. In this incident, TONGOLENA also had to be steadied, and BRAVE GENTLEMAN, which was following, shifted out abruptly, making contact with CORIOLANUS, which in turn made contact with PAC OF BRIDE, which became unbalanced. IL PALIO continued to race at the heels of A BLUE BIJOU, and near the 400m. shifted out and made contact with SHATRI MAGIC.
LADY KARAJAN was momentarily held up behind CORIOLANUS near the 200m..
STYLISH KNIGHT shifted out in the straight, taking SHATRI MAGIC wider on the track.
RACE 6: TOOGOOLAWAH EXCHANGE HOTEL H'CAP - 1200M.
Trainer L. Ross was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for WOLF WALKING by the prescribed time.
GOODBYE TO LOVE, WICKI POPO and NIGHT IN VIENNA were all slow to begin.
After leaving the 600m., PARIS SILK shifted in and made contact with IRISH SON, which shifted in abruptly, hampering NOODOO.
After passing the 400m., PARIS SILK shifted out, taking IRISH SON out on to the heels of ESCOBAH.
RACE 7: EXCHANGE HOTEL TOOGOOLAWAH H'CAP - 1200M.
REGAL GENTLEMAN was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1000m., EVIL DEED had to be steadied off the heels of ROADINSKY, which shifted in.
Near the 200m., M. Carson's left foot became dislodged from the stirrup iron on AMUN UMUN, placing that rider at a disadvantage.
RACE 8: MAROOCHYDORE PINCUSHION CARAVAN PARK H'CAP - 800M.
PACIFIC MELODY and CASSIE'S PRINCESS were slow to begin.
LITTLE TORNADO made heavy contact with the running rail rounding the home turn.
Jockey T. Treichel and H. Parkinson were questioned regarding T. Treichel's handling of AIM OF LIFE throughout the event. T. Treichel explaned that he had been instructed to allow the gelding to settle wherever comfortable,to keep the horse balanced and refrain from using the whip, however when attempting to improve making the home turn, was hampered by CASSIE'S PRINCESS, which shifted out. After viewing the video, T. Treichel conceded that he may have erred by allowing AIM OF LIFE to settle further back than anticipated. Trainer H. Parkinson confirmed the instructions, adding that the connections has supported the horse. He advised stewards that he had removed the nose roll on the gelding as it had a tendency to race with its head up, and in the circumstances he was satisfied with T. Treichel's handling of the gelding given its past history. Stewards noted the explanations, however advised T. Treichel that in similar circumstances he would be expected to show more initiative.
