Weather: Fine Track: Good 3  Rail:True
Stewards: K Daly, C Fedrick
Starter: S Tou
Clerk of Scales: J Banks
Judge:  L Smyth
Veterinarian: Dr C Bolton
Swab Attendant: B Andrews
Jockey Advocate: G Smith

Race 1: BENCHMARK 55 HDCP

Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards to determine if CROWN OF DREAMS was afforded a fair start. After viewing the head on patrol video stewards found that CROWN OF DREAMS reared of its own accord when the start was effected and as such declared a runner.

CROWN OF DREAMS – As had not started for almost 2 years was examined by the Club Vet prior to the start and cleared to run. Reared when the gates opened and lost ground. A short distance later commenced to buck and was retired from the event near the 600 metres. Trainer D Jones was advised CROWN OF DREAMS would be required to trial satisfactorily on 2 occasions before being permitted to start again.

JEPTOO – Competed on previous day at ITC meeting finishing 6th of 8 and beaten 1.2 lengths. Examined by club Vet prior to start and cleared to run. A public announcement was made to this effect.

BAIO – taken wider and hampered by another rounding the home turn.

CLEVER BUTTONS – checked near the 400 metres when another runner hung out.

RHODRY – checked off heels of another runner near the 400 metres.

NUG’S POCKET – hung out for the majority of the event and near the 400 metres, despite the efforts of the rider, shifted out and checked both CLEVER BUTTONS and RHODRY. Rounding the home turn continued to shift wider on the track hampering BAIO and BAGGER BLUES. A post race vet examination failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer K Wenck was advised NUG’S POCKET would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

BAGGER BLUES - As had not started for a period of 18 months was examined by the Club Vet prior to the start and cleared to run. When App A Van Der Sanden was to be overweight and only able to claim 11/2 of her 2 kgs claim she was fined the sum of $100. Prior to the start kicked in the enclosure by the Clerk of Course pony, examined behind the barriers by Club Vet and cleared to start.

Race 2: MAIDEN PLATE 800 Metres

ASCOT BOUND – jumped out at the start.

PARELEMA – jumped in at the start.

BIA TYCHE – tightened at the start between runners. Raced greenly in the early stages of the event.

SWEET MARGARET – slow to begin.

Race 3: MAIDEN PLATE 1200 Metres

BRAVE RYANHEART – which was having its first race start raced greenly from the 600 metres placing its rider at a disadvantage. Raced wide in the early and middle stages.

HE’S A WAG – When asked to comment on the performance, rider A Badger stated the gelding was not suited by the fast early pace and as a result raced some distance off the main body of the field in the early and middle stages. She added HE’S A WAG began to respond to her riding approaching the home turn and in the straight finished the race off fairly. Jockey Badger indicated that it was now the intention of connections to step the gelding up in distance. Stewards noted the explanations

COURT RULES – raced wide in early and middle stages of the event.

SHARMAZEAL – slow to begin.

COLD GOLD – Began awkwardly and lost ground at the start. S Drake, rider of COLD GOLD which was placed 5th by the judge, pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137(b) in that she failed to ride the filly out fully to the line which in the opinion of the stewards cost the filly 4th placing. S Drake was fined the sum of $300.

MISS COLUMBIA – raced wide for the majority of the event.

PURSLANE – when questioned regarding the poor performance to be beaten 26 lengths rider P Romeo stated the filly struggled to maintain a position in the early stages of the event and near the 600 metres commenced to weaken despite his urgings. He added in his opinion PURSLANE did not appreciate today’s firm track surface. Trainer K Munce advised stewards the filly would now be spelled. A post race Vet examination did not reveal any abnormality.

Race 4: BENCHMARK 65 HDCP 1460 Metres

SUMMERS DAY – slow to begin.

Race 5: BENCHMARK 65 HDCP 1750 Metres

OUR GRANDE FINALE – In the presence of Jockey advocate Mr G Smith, stewards questioned App A Van Der Sanden regarding tactics to race 4 wide for the majority of the race. She stated that after beginning well from the wide draw and being caught 4 deep rounding the 1500 metre turn she initially considered restraining her mount to a trailing position, however OUR GRANDE FINALE soon after commenced to race keenly and as a result remained racing in a 4 deep position for a major portion of the race. After viewing the DVD replay App Van Der Sanden agreed she had erred in not allowing her mount to improve forward into a position outside the leader in the early stages of the event when the opportunity to do so arose. Taking into account App Van Der Sanden’s limited race riding experience in middle distance races stewards took no further action other than to advise that in similar circumstances she would be expected to show greater initiative and ride in a more proactive manner.

SO CHOOSY – bumped at the start

TICKETS TO RIDE – when questioned regarding below market performance rider J Missen stated despite being caught wide in the early and middle stages of the event the gelding travelled well until the 600 metres, however was under pressure soon after and failed to respond to his riding from that point. J Missen added that this was TICKETS TO RIDE first start beyond 1400 metres and in his opinion the gelding did not handle the step up in distance of today’s longer race.

WENSLEY ROAD – jumped out at the start and bumped another runner.
