Stewards accepted an explanation from trainer B. Thomson regarding the late rider notifications for GEORGE TOWN, AURA GOLD, BOOMALINA and SALIKA DIVA.

The following runners underwent a pre-race veterinary examination, due to racing at Mackay on 19/09/2023, and were all passed fit to start in their respective events; PRIVATE SECTOR, REDGUM ROSIE, INVINCIBLE JET.

Race 1: INCITEC PIVOT QTIS Maiden Plate 1200 metres

CANELANDER – Raced wide throughout.

GEORGE TOWN – Approaching the 800m, had to be steadied off the heels of CANELANDER when the pace slackened. Commenced to over-race shortly thereafter.

MOHS SCALE – Checked and blundered on jumping. Ran extremely wide rounding the home turn.

CROAGH PATRICK – Raced disappointingly. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which revealed no significant findings. Apprentice I. Teh stated that the gelding resented the kickback in the early stages and failed to stretch out in the event. Trainer S. Acornley was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding’s record regarding its racing performance on dirt tracks.

HOT VALOUR – Proved difficult to load. Resented the kickback in running. Trainer F. Wieland was advised that HOT VALOUR will be stood down from racing on dirt tracks.

PRIVATE SECTOR – Raced at Mackay on 19/09/2023, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Jockey S. Sheargold was examined by QAS officers on returning to scale suffering heat distress. After this examination, rider S. Sheargold was cleared to fulfill his remaining riding engagements.

RUPERT'S BOY – Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which revealed bruising to the nearside eye region.

Race 3: HERBERT HALL RATINGS BAND 0 - 50 Handicap 1750 metres

NOTHIN' BUT LOOKS – Bumped with REBEL LAKE on jumping. Apprentice R. Wilson dropped her whip on the home turn.

REBEL LAKE – Collided with NOTHIN’ BUT LOOKS on jumping. Raced wide for the majority. Stewards questioned Apprentice N. Seymour regarding the riding tactics adopted on REBEL LAKE. App. Seymour stated that she elected to race three wide to avoid kickback after having no opportunity to obtain cover in the early and middle stages. App. Seymour further stated that the horse came off the bit in the middle stages and then finished the race off well. Stewards noted the explanation.

WHISKEY ROW – Over raced until the 1250m.

ADAMINABY – Over raced momentarily passing the 1350m.

REDGUM ROSIE – Raced at Mackay on 19/09/2023, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start.

WISE DRAGON – Raced three wide with cover for the majority. Jockey G Kliese was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a) in that he allowed his mount to shift in at the 600 metres resulting in HEALING GAME being taken in onto DO WELL LEGEND which was severely checked . Jockey G Kliese licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days to commence midnight 1 October 2023 and expire midnight 9 October 2023.

GOLDEN GORGE – Raced three wide for the majority.

HEALING GAME – Raced ungenerously approaching the 1550 metres. Placed in restrictive room and hampered at the 600 metres.

FORGIATO (NZ) - Raced wide without cover for much of the race. Jockey M Abe was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a) in that he allowed his mount to shift in at the 600 metres resulting in OLYMPIC KORCHNOI (BRZ) being taken in onto MOTAMAYIZ (GB) which was severely checked . Jockey M Abe’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 11 days to commence midnight 22 September 2023 and expire midnight 3 October 2023.

MOTAMAYIZ (GB) – Severely checked at the 600 metres as a result of OLYMPIC KORCHNOI (BRZ) being taken in by FORGIATO (NZ).
Upon returning to scale, fourth place getter Apprentice J. Doolan lodged a protest against third placegetter OLYMPIC KORCHNOI (BRZ) ridden by Apprentice G. Semmens alleging interference at the 600m. After hearing evidence from both riders, connections and considering Stewards observations, the protest was dismissed.

HIT SNOOZE - Raced three wide throughout.

HALLSIDE HAMMER – Failed to obtain clear running until the 200 metres. Apprentice R. Wilson was questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on HALLSIDE HAMMER and the reason she failed to take a run to the outside of AHWAHNEECHEE and attempt to improve from the 400 metres to the 300 metres. . Apprentice Wilson advised that she did not believe that there was sufficient room to improve without hampering AURA GOLD which was racing to her outside. After viewing the official patrol film Stewards advised Apprentice R. Wilson that she may have erred at that point by electing to race on the fence. Ms Wilson was reminded of her obligations under AR129(2).

AURA GOLD - Raced three wide throughout.

Race 6: DGH BENCHMARK 50 Handicap 1000 metres

ABSOLUTE LEGEND - Slow to begin. Forced extremely wide making the home turn.

WHEY MISCHIEF – Made the home turn awkwardly checking and forcing wider, SILENT ANGEL, BOOMALINA, LORD POWER and ABSOLUTE LEGEND.
Stewards spoke to apprentice J. Edwards and trainer S. Massingham regarding the racing manners of WHEY MISCHIEF which failed to settle and raced ungenerously throughout. Apprentice J Edwards advised that she believed the gelding was not comfortable on the tight circuit and would be better suited racing on a grassed surface. Trainer S Massingham agreed and advised that he would not be starting WHEY MISCHIEF at Ewan again. No further action was taken based on this undertaking.

HEISWOODY – Stewards questioned Trainer T. McGovern regarding the improved performance of the gelding. Mr McGovern advised that HEISWOODY had been slow to begin at its previous start in Bowen on 19 August 2023 and that he and connections were disappointed with the ride on that day. He advised todays Jockey M Butler that he wanted the gelding ridden forward. Trainer T. McGovern also stated that he had then eased the preparation of the gelding after two previous disappointing race performances, before recently placing HEISWOODY in a public jump out at Townsville which it had won by a large margin and in impressive fashion. Based on this track work, he stated that he was confident of the geldings’ chances and connections had supported the gelding well in today’s event. The explanation of Trainer T. McGovern was noted.

MURUNGAL - Slow to begin.

LORD POWER – Raced wide and forced wide making the home turn when another runner failed to corner.

Race 7: W TITLEY & CO Class 6 Plate 1300 metres

INVINCIBLE JET – Raced at Mackay on 19/09/2023, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was declared fit to start. Due to winning at Mackay on 19/09/2023 after weights for this meeting having been published, INVINCIBLE JET was re-handicapped to carry an extra 1.5kg, making the handicap weight for this event 60.0kg.
