GENERAL

From Nanango 4 October 2014 – Race 4: Stewards today concluded an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding jockey S. Drake being dislodged from MIDNIGHT ACE near the 700m. The inquiry was opened on the day in question, at which point initial evidence was taken from jockeys C. Eaton (DESERT LAIR) and W. O’Connell (BEAUTIFUL BARB), and then adjourned as jockey S. Drake had been transported to hospital. Today evidence was taken from jockey S. Drake, along with viewing the available stewards’ race day patrol films. After considering all the evidence, stewards were of the view that near the 700m DESERT LAIR was racing ungenerously and shifting ground, at which point jockey Drake attempted to shift her mount out around the heels of DESERT LIAR, and in doing so clipped that runner’s heels, resulting in MIDNIGHT ACE blundering and S. Drake being dislodged. Stewards could not be satisfied on all the evidence that the actions of any one rider were careless or contributed in any way to jockey S. Drake being dislodged and therefore took no further action.

GENERAL

As J. Taylor was indisposed due to injury, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: BROOKS EARTHMOVING QTIS 2YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1100M

EXTREME STYLE – Raced three wide for the majority of the event.

AHOTONE – Compounded in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer L. Ross reported that the horse was somewhat disappointing and would now be sent for an immediate spell, after which he would consider its racing future. Mr Ross was advised that the horse will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again.

RUBY RAY – After being initially slow to begin, was inconvenienced shortly after the start by EXTREME STYLE, which shifted out.

Race 2: LOCKYER PRODUCE GATTON MAIDEN H’CAP – 1600M

ODE TO LUCK – Had to be steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of SLUGSBROTHERTURBO near the 1100m.

TE RANGI – Raced extremely wide for the majority of the event.

EXCELLENT WINNER – Slow to begin.

DIAMOND RACER – Had to be checked from heels when overracing and hanging in approaching the 1100m.

ELIZA BELLE – Connections advised that it would be the intention to have the horse ridden back in the field. The horse was ridden accordingly.

OUR LITTLE MISSY – As apprentice B. Newport was unable to claim his full allowance, E. Ljung was substituted as the rider of this runner. Apprentice Newport was fined $100. Slow to begin and lost ground.

Race 3: GATTON HAWKS RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1400M

FATHER SHADY – Overraced in the early and middle stages. Crowded for room approaching the winning post.

LAND OFFICE – Overraced badly until a point near the 600m.

COME BY OFTEN – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

EARHART – Apprentice L. Tilley was fined $300 for using the whip in consecutive strides and on more than 5 occasions in a forehand manner prior to the 100m.

Race 4: GATTON VIEW HOTEL MAIDEN PLATE – 1100M

As Michael Palmer was to be overweight, Matthew Palmer was substituted as the rider of FLOWER OF YOUTH. Michael Palmer was fined $100.

ENTER SANDMAN – Overraced badly in the early and middle stages, continued to race greenly throughout and near the 500m shifted in despite the efforts of the rider and inconvenienced FLOWER OF YOUTH, which had to be checked. Trainer G. Cornish was advised that a warning will be placed on the horse’s racing manners.

SPEAR OF DESTINY – Raced wide throughout.

EXPECTED TOBEGREAT – Slow to begin.

RED’S THE GO – Stewards permitted the horse to race without its advertised gear of nose roll on after being given an assurance from trainer R. Lipp that the horse had raced without this gear at its previous start at Dalby. A public announcement was made to this effect. Raced wide throughout.

ISTIMEWA – Stewards questioned R. McMahon regarding his tactics after the horse settled towards the rear of the field today, which is in contrast to its last start where it led at the Sunshine Coast. Jockey McMahon stated that from the wide gate, and after only beginning fairly, he was of the view that he would be trapped wide so he elected to restrain the filly and settle towards the rear of the field with cover. Stewards noted his comments.

SIR EARLSTOUN – After standing very awkwardly, the horse jumped in at the start and struck the side of its gate. Had to be steadied after improving on to heels near the 400m.

Race 5: ROYAL HOTEL GATTON CUP SUNDAY JUNE 7 CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1100M

LE CHACAL – Slow to begin and then raced awkwardly for a number of strides. Had to be checked when racing greenly near the 500m and shifted wider on the track. Hung out rounding the home turn. Trainer R. Lipp was advised that in light of the horse’s performance today, he would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate before it is permitted to race again.

GOHARDASUN – Overraced in the early stages. Shifted in under pressure in the home straight.

ALL OUR WIVES – As apprentice B. Newport was unable to claim his full allowance, E. Ljung was substituted as the rider of this runner. Apprentice Newport was fined $100. Reared at the start and lost ground.

Race 6: GATTON MOTEL/GOLDSTAR PAINTING WINTER PROVINCIAL STAYERS SERIES BM75 – 2000M

ROOMS ON FIRE – Inclined to lay in for the majority of the home straight.

WARSHIP – When overracing approaching the winning post on the first occasion, shifted out across heels and had to be checked. After making the crossing awkwardly near the 1600m, the horse was allowed to stride forward and take up a position in the lead near the 1200m. Steadied from heels near the 300m when weakening.

FLYING TIGER – Raced three wide throughout.
