GENERAL

After arriving on course, stewards inspected the track, following which it was downgraded to SOFT 7 at 11:00 am due to persistent showers after scratching time.

Race 1: THE BET FAIRY QTIS 2YO H’CAP – 860M

IMAGINALTHEPEOPLE – On entering the home straight had to steady from the heels of WONDER BOOM, which shifted in. Apprentice M. McGillivray, the rider of WONDER BOOM, was advised to exercise more care.

REMEMBER MARY – Slow to begin. Raced greenly with its head in the air approaching the 400m.

ASK AUDREY – Tightened for room on jumping and lost ground.

SAY IT FORWARD – Raced four wide throughout.

SWEETT DAZZLER – Began awkwardly, then blundered shortly after the start.

THEOUTLAWSDAUGHTER – Slow to begin.

Race 2: THE STAR ENTERTAINMENT GROUP MAIDEN H’CAP – 1400M

After all horses were loaded into the barriers, a malfunction occurred which resulted in all barriers opening prematurely and J. Missen being dislodged from DE LA LAD. The starter immediately signalled a false start and all runners were duly restrained by their riders and returned to the barriers where all horses were examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start with the exception of DE LA LAD, which was declared a late scratching at 1:25 pm on veterinary advice. Jockey J. Missen was uninjured in this incident.

Due to the barriers requiring mechanical attention, all horses returned to the enclosure and the starting times of Races 2, 3 and 4 were rescheduled to 1:50 pm, 2:18 pm and 2:42 pm respectively.

On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on DE LA LAD be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to scratching time:

0 cents in the dollar for the Win #
0 cents in the dollar for place of winner #
15 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #
13 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #

SCANDALS – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination at the request of the trainer and was cleared to race. Slow to begin. Apprentice N. Keal pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii) of using his whip on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m. Apprentice Keal’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 7 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 17 June and expire at midnight on Saturday 24 June 2017. In determining penalty, stewards were mindful of apprentice Keal’s recent poor record in regard to this rule, in particular, this being his 5th breach in the past 7 days.

ELECTRIC ANNA – Injured en route to the course. Late scratching at 12:00 pm on veterinary advice. Trainer R. Drysdale was advised that he will be required to produce a veterinary certificate.

BALLINA BAY – Steadied from heels near the 850m.

SMOOTH PEBBLES – After racing keenly near the 800m, was shifted to a three wide position and raced wide for the remainder of the event.

SHERINGA – Raced wide from near the 800m.

Race 3: BEST EMPLOYMENT CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1400M

HOWNOWBROWNCOW – Forced wider on the track rounding the home turn.

OVERLAP – Raced three wide throughout.

FLINDERS DRAGON – Disappointed for a run near the 600m and lost ground. Sustained a puncture wound to the off hind leg.

MALCRIADO – Inconvenienced and had to be checked when entering the home straight.

VOANABA – Had to be checked on entering the home straight and was forced wider on the track.

SPARKLING GIFT – Forced wider on the track rounding the home turn.

ST JAMES SQUARE – Shifted out at the start and bumped another runner. Forced wider on the track rounding the home turn.

SWINGING – Bumped heavily at the start. Inconvenienced on entering the home straight and forced wider on the track. The veterinary surgeon reported that the horse had sustained abrasions to the off hind leg consistent with being galloped on.

STORM ANCHOR – C. Eaton reported that her mount hung out throughout. Trainer R. Drysdale will be advised that a warning will be placed on the horse’s racing manners.

Stewards inquired into an incident near the 400m where FLINDERS DRAGON and STORM ANCHOR were both checked badly and lost ground. After taking evidence from the riders involved and reviewing the patrol footage, stewards found that approaching the 400m STORM ANCHOR, which was hanging out, momentarily shifted to a position a tight one off the fence. A short distance later FLINDERS DRAGON attempted to improve to the inside of STORM ANCHOR, however when STORM ANCHOR shifted back in slightly, FLINDERS DRAGON became tightened for room and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of STORM ANCHOR, resulting in both runners becoming unbalanced and being checked badly. In deeming the matter a racing incident, stewards could not be satisfied that the actions of any one rider were responsible for this incident, however reminded C. Schmidt, the rider of FLINDERS DRAGON, to exercise more care when attempting narrow runs on tight turning tracks that are rain-affected.

Race 4: OZ LAV PLUMBING BENCHMARK 58 H’CAP – 1600M

CONCRETUS – Apprentice M. McGillivray dropped his reins approaching the 100m before regaining the use of them a short distance later. Apprentice M. McGillivray reported at scale that his left foot had made heavy contact with the barriers on jumping away.

GET ON – Trainer T. Thomas was fined $100 for the late declaration of apprentice N. Keal as rider.

YOURS TRUTHFULLY – Raced three wide in the early and middle stages.

GREY NOT BLACK – Raced three wide throughout.

Race 5: BFP AGRICULTURAL CONSULTANTS P/L BENCHMARK 58 H’CAP – 1100M

TIN’S POCKET – Broke through the barriers, quickly restrained, underwent a veterinary inspection and was cleared to race. Began awkwardly.

ALKIPPE – Late scratching at 11:10 am due to the track downgrade.

MACHU PICCHU – Slow to begin.

JERROCITY – Taken wider on the track leaving the 600m.

Race 6: COOK’S TPT LOCKYER LIGHTNING BENCHMARK 70 H’CAP – 1100M

KLAMMER – Inclined to lay in over the concluding stages. The veterinary surgeon reported that the horse had sustained abrasions to the off hind leg consistent with being galloped on.

ZIP TO THE MOON – Raced wide throughout. Apprentice N. Keal was reprimanded for using the whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m. In issuing a reprimand, stewards used their discretion after taking into account that apprentice Keal had incurred a suspension for a similar infringement in Race 2 as well as his minimal whip use in the last 100m.

REBEL ROVER – On return to scale apprentice M. Murphy reported that the gelding travelled comfortably throughout the event until entering the home straight where, when placed under pressure, it failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing.

ROXY RHYTHM – Raced wide throughout. Apprentice B. Derbyshire was reprimanded for using the whip on 8 occasions prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, stewards were mindful of apprentice Derbyshire’s good record.

Race 7: ROYAL HOTEL GATTON CUP OPEN H’CAP – 2000M

ANYMORE – Apprentice R. Ride was fined $300 for using the whip on 10 occasions prior to the 100m.

UNIQUE MISTIQUE – Raced wide throughout. Made the home turn wide.

ROGALI – Raced keenly approaching the first turn. C. Schmidt was reprimanded for using the whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.

QABLA – As apprentice M. McGillivray sustained a foot injury earlier in the day and was unable to fulfil his engagement, apprentice M. Murphy was substituted as rider. Shifted out near the 1300m and raced wide from that point onwards.
