Connections were advised that the gelding will require a further barrier certificate prior to its next race start.

Prior to the declaration of correct weight Stewards permitted the connections of MISS MELRAE, placed 3rd by the Judge, to view the Stewards' patrol footage in the home straight to ascertain whether there were grounds to lodge an objection against 2nd placegetter TABARD (App. N. Keal). After viewing the film, Apprentice S. Sweeney and Trainer M. Reynolds indicated that they did not wish to proceed.

MILLION – Heavily bumped near the 1200m. Jockey R. Goltz reported that, in his opinion, the filly was disappointing however he could not offer any explanation for the performance other than that the heavy bump his mount received near the 1200m may have had an effect on its  overall performance.

Race 3: LOCKYER VALLEY WASTE MANAGEMENT QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1100M

The start of this race was delayed when LUCKY FIX became fractious and reared in the barriers making heavy contact with barrier partition. The gelding was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 2.41pm. All monies invested on the gelding were ordered to be refunded with the following deductions applicable.

1 cents in the dollar for the Win #11
3 cents in the dollar for place of winner #11
7 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #3
2 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #1

Connections were advised that the gelding will require a further barrier certificate prior to its next race start.

Prior to the declaration of correct weight Stewards permitted jockey K. Yoshida, the rider of HEART VANDELAY, placed 2nd by the Judge, to view the Stewards' patrol footage approaching the 800m to ascertain whether there were grounds to lodge an objection against 1st placegetter QUANYIN (App. A. Thompson). After viewing the film, jockey Yoshida indicated that he did not wish to proceed.

At a subsequent inquiry, Apprentice A. Thompson, the rider of QUANYIN, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 131(a) in that approaching the 800m he permitted his mount to shift in from a position wider on the track when insufficiently clear of HEART VANDELAY (K. Yoshida) resulting in jockey K. Yoshida having to check his mount which then lost ground. In this incident MR SO GOOD (C. Eaton), which was in a trailing position, was also inconvenienced. Apprentice Thompson’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 14 days, to commence at midnight on Sunday 31 March 2019 and expire at midnight on Sunday 14 April 2019. In determining penalty, Stewards considered the degree of interference suffered to HEART VANDELAY, and were also mindful of Apprentice Thompson’s two recent suspensions in relation to this rule.

CUZCO – Steadied when tightened for room shortly after the start.

HEART VANDELAY – Began awkwardly.

AMERICAN CROWN – Inconvenienced at the start. Overraced in the early stages and shifted out. Overraced approaching the 600m and had to be steadied from heels. Trainer M. Nolan was advised that a warning will be placed on the filly for its racing manners.

ARC OF GOLD – Raced 3 wide for the majority.

MS ORBITAL SPIRIT – Began awkwardly and shifted out.

SHE GOES BOOM – Inconvenienced at the start. Forced wider on the track near the 800m and lost its position.

MR SO GOOD – Jumped awkwardly and then shifted in abruptly causing interference to the runners to its inside. Steadied from the heels of HEART VANDELAY near the 800m.

CYCLONE KAYCEE – Stewards permitted Apprentice N. Keal to ride the gelding claiming only 1kg of his 1.5kg allowance.

Race 4: RAY BACHMANN REAL ESTATE BENCHMARK 55 H’CAP – 1600M

THAT’S MA BOY – When Apprentice M. Wishart elected to ease the gelding approaching the 1200m, it hung out marginally before being corrected away from the heels of PRINCE OF BARODA.

Race 6: HAYMANS ELECTRICAL GATTON LAIDLEY CUP OPEN H’CAP – 1600M

GREEN EMPIRE – Tightened and lost ground approaching the 1200m.

MURAQABA – Slow into stride and, as a result, Apprentice A. Thompson elected to improve wider on the track before reaching a position outside the leader near the 1100m.

CONGELATOR – Overraced in the early stages and had to be steadied from the heels of DUTCH TREAT.

UNIQUE MISTIQUE – Raced 3 wide in the early stages.

Stewards inquired into an incident approaching the 1200m in which GREEN EMPIRE (A. Fancourt) was tightened, checked, and lost ground. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the patrol footage, it was determined that approaching the turn near the 1200m, MENDELSSOHN (App. R. Goldsbury) momentarily stepped inwards which resulted in GREEN EMPIRE, which was racing to its inside, being checked. As Stewards felt that UNIQUE MISTIQUE (K. Yoshida), which was racing to the outside of GREEN EMPIRE, may have also shifted in and contributed to this incident, they could not attribute the interference to the actions of any one rider and therefore elected to take the matter no further.

Race 7: PORTERS PLAINLAND HOTEL CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1100M

RUBY RUSH – Stewards permitted Apprentice N. Keal to ride the mare claiming only 1kg of his 1.5kg allowance.

REBEL SAGA – Tightened and lost ground near the 600m.

SHADYVALE STAR – Hung in when placed under pressure near the 150m.

RIVER FLYER – As T. Marshall was unable to arrive on course to fulfil his engagement after being stood down at another venue, N. Thomas was substituted as rider.

NICCONI BAY – Shifted in under riding near the 200m and, as a result, made heavy contact with the running rail.

STAR FROM HEAVEN – Slow into stride and then shortly after was tightened between runners and lost ground.

Stewards inquired into an incident near the 600m involving SHADYVALE STAR (App. M. Wishart) , REBEL SAGA (K. Yoshida), RUBY RUSH (App. N. Keal) and ANAKYN DARAXES (App. A. Thompson).  After considering all evidence from the riders, Stewards determined that REBEL SAGA was tightened and inconvenienced between runners which resulted in jockey K. Yoshida restraining to a more rearward position. Stewards noted that SHADYVALE STAR had shifted out marginally and contributed to the interference, and that ANAKYN DARAXES, which was racing widest on the course, had shifted in causing some tightening to its inside. Apprentice Thompson, the rider of ANAKYN DARAXES, was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

Stewards inquired into an incident which occurred following the running of this race involving Apprentice A. Thompson and jockey K. Yoshida. Stewards determined that Apprentice Thompson had made inappropriate comments to jockey Yoshida, and issued a reprimand to Apprentice Thompson under the provisions of AR. 115(1)(a) for engaging in misconduct. In determining penalty Stewards were mindful that Apprentice Thompson was remorseful for his actions and had apologised to jockey Yoshida.
