GENERAL
 
Stewards declared MONEY BEAR at late scratching at 8.04am. Trainer M. Currie was fined $200 under the provisions of LR68(1) for failing to scratch the gelding by the prescribed time.
 
Stewards approved the following overweight:
Race 6, No. 13 AQUARIUS - D. McGillivray +1kg (55kg)
 
 
Race 1: GATTON MEAT CENTRE MAIDEN PLATE (860m)
 
DINOSPHERE – Laid in for some distance passing the 600m placing OAKFIELD PANTHER momentarily in restricted room. Raced greenly and laid in under pressure in the home straight proving difficult to ride out.
 
OAKFIELD PANTHER – Momentarily tightened for room near the 600m when DINOSPHERE laid in.
 
ZESTY BOY (NZ) – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and passed fit to start. From the wide barrier shifted behind runners to obtain a position with cover.
 
BEST COFFEE – Approaching the 300m was steadied when momentarily tightened for room when ENDING SWEET (A. Jones) shifted in. Whilst acknowledging that Jockey A. Jones made an effort to correct her mount, Stewards nonetheless reprimanded A. Jones under AR131(a) for careless riding for failing to relieve the pressure sooner than she did on this occasion.
 
DEMES GIRL – Raced keenly when being restrained to obtain a position with cover near the 700m.
 
SWERVES – From the wide barrier shifted behind runners to obtain a position with cover. Shifted in abruptly and bumped the running rail near the 400m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
ENDING SWEET – Laid out for some distance passing the 700m. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey A. Jones stated in her opinion, the filly may have been over-represented in the market, having trialled well leading into the event. She added the filly was inclined to race greenly throughout the event and would derive further experience from the event.
 
 
Race 2: TEMPORARY FENCE & BARRIER HIRE - 1300 352 992 RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 HANDICAP (860m)
 
LOADED GUN – Jockey L. Tarrant reported at scale that after the gelding was fractious in the barriers prior to the start being effected, it was subsequently slow to begin and settled further back than may have been expected. Near the 700m was checked when racing in restricted room to the inside of POLYGAL and PRINCE OF MARAKESH which after contacting the running rail shifted out abruptly. Laid out for some distance near the 500m.
 
HE'S A DEVIL – Began awkwardly. Near the 700m momentarily steadied when AWESOME AUDREY shifted in. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey J. Huxtable stated the gelding would be better suited over further distances.
 
SHAJAEA – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
EMILEE'S EMPIRE – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Apprentice J. Molloy reported that the wide run proved detrimental to the mare’s finishing efforts. Forced wider near the 400m when AWESOME AUDREY shifted out to improve. Apprentice J. Molloy was severely reprimanded under AR128(2) for leaving the track before obtaining permission from Stewards.
 
AWESOME AUDREY – Stewards permitted the mare to race without a tongue when it was inadvertently added to the mare’s gear. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Shifted out to improve near the 400m forcing EMILEE’S EMPIRE wider on the track.
 
PRINCE OF MARAKESH – Raced keenly in the early stages of the event and bumped the running rail near the 700m.
 
SNEAKY STARTER – Laid out rounding the home-turn.
 
POLYGAL – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
 
Race 3: LADBROKES YARD COMMENTS MAIDEN PLATE (1400m)
 
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, the Judge identified that the original Judge’s semaphore board numbers were incorrect for 4th place. It was identified that LOOK AT ROSA had been placed 4th and GOLD PRINCE had been placed 5th. It was then identified that based on the official photo, GOLD PRINCE should have been placed 4th and LOOK AT ROSA placed 5th. After discussing with the Judges, they accepted that they had made an error and the placings were amended pursuant to AR 214(4)(a) and correct weight was declared on numbers 12, 9, 6, 4, 10.
 
VISCOUNT SYDNEY – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer K. Stabe was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s record for the poor performance. Jockey M. Gray was reminded under AR132(6)(c) regarding his whip use when out of contention.
 
ENLIGHTENING – Laid out under pressure in the home straight. Over the concluding stages, shifted in abruptly and bumped TINY WONDER. Jockey B. Thornton was advised to exercise greater care and straighten his mounts sooner in similar circumstances.
 
GOLD PRINCE – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
ANOTHERLOVELYDAY – Laid in under pressure in the early part of home straight.
 
CHICKA – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
GO GIRL GO (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 1200m steadied when racing in restricted room.
 
LOOK AT ROSA – Began awkwardly and bumped. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
STORM DREAMER – Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
TINY WONDER – Buffeted between runners on jumping. From the wide barrier shifted behind runners in the early stages to obtain a position with cover. Bumped over the concluding stages when ENLIGHTENING shifted in abruptly.
 
PRIDE OF PASSION – Began awkwardly and bumped.
 
LUCIFER THE CAT – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
 
 
Race 4: BARRIER REEF POOLS MAIDEN PLATE (1100m)
 
LE GAGNEUR – Began very awkwardly resulting in Apprentice C. Sutherland becoming unbalanced and the gelding losing ground. Apprentice C. Sutherland advised that his breastplate broke exiting the barriers placing him at a disadvantage during the event.
 
WHATTA WHITT – Began awkwardly. Shortly after the start bumped with DOLLY’S A NATURAL. Made heavy contact with the running rail for a number of strides near the 500m.
 
CHAYSE'N'SCOTTY – Dipped near the 600m when racing keenly.
 
LION'S PRIDE – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Apprentice T. Fenlon stated the gelding failed to respond when placed under pressure and expressed disappointment in the overall performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
QICKWIT – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
DOLLY'S A NATURAL – Bumped soon after the start with WHATTA WHITT. Raced wide and without cover from the 600m. Jockey M. Hellyer advised in his opinion that the mare felt amiss on pulling up. As the mare had left the racecourse prior to undergoing a post-race veterinary examination, trainer J. Brown was advised the mare would require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
 
 
Race 5: GATTON CUP CALCUTTA - GATTON JUBILEE GOLF CLUB FRIDAY 28TH JUNE BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP (1100m)
 
FLYING BIRDS – Began awkwardly and bumped. Steadied from the heels of SMILING ZAC near the 300m when ASHIGARU shifted in. Leaving the 200m attempted a marginal run between SMILING ZAC and ASHIGARU before becoming crowded and blundering. While noting there was a marginal shift inward by ASHIGARU leading up to this incident, Jockey J. Huxtable was advised to exercise greater care and ensure there is sufficient room before attempting similar runs.
 
SMILING ZAC (NZ) – Trainer M. Currie was fined $100 under LR67(1) for the late declaration of Apprentice D. Bennett as the rider of the gelding. Bumped on jumping. Raced keenly in the early stages. Approaching the home-turn had to be steadied when ASHIGURU shifted in. Leaving the 200m bumped on the hindquarters by FLYING BIRDS. Shifted out passing the winning post and was steadied from heels. Trainer M. Currie expressed disappointment with the performance and undertook to report back on the gelding’s condition in coming days. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have lacerations to the near-hindleg consistent with being galloped on.
 
ZOUPERB – Began awkwardly and bumped. Raced wide and without cover from the 600m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
OUR RED PLANET – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
ASHIGARU – Began awkwardly and bumped. Approaching the home turn, shifted in marginally when under pressure placing SMILING ZAC in restricted room which was steadied. Jockey A. Thompson was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding and advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground. Bumped leaving the 200m by FLYING BIRDS and became unbalanced. Jockey A. Thompson reported the gelding hung-in throughout the event.
 
 
Race 6: MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION CHARITY GOLF DAY FRIDAY 28 JUNE BOOK NOW 07 5462 1420 BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP (1600m)
 
VAN GOGH – Bumped the running rail on several occasions near the 500m.
 
SCENIC RIM – Began awkwardly. Obliged to momentarily steady entering the home straight from the heels of FLIC EN FLAC which laid in. When asked to comment on the performance of the gelding, Apprentice R. Thorburn stated that after doing some work early to obtain the lead, the gelding commenced to weaken when placed under pressure in the home straight and proved disappointing. R. Thorburn was reminded of his obligations regarding his whip when his mounts are out of contention or not responding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
 
GUTS 'N' GLORY – Obliged to shift to the outside of the tiring SCENIC ROOM approaching the 200m to obtain clear running.
 
MENARI MAGIC – Began awkwardly.
 
A CERTAIN MAYBE - Obliged to shift to the outside of the tiring SCENIC ROOM approaching the 200m to obtain clear running.
 
SCOTTISH PRINCE – Raced wide and without cover until the 800m.
 
FLIC EN FLAC – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
SIENNA'S AWARD – Blundered badly on jumping resulting in its rider becoming unbalanced and lost ground. Obliged to steady from heels approaching the 1100m. Steadied from the heels of GUTS ‘N’ GLORY near the 600m.
 
AQUARIUS – From a wide barrier shifted behind runners in the early stages to obtain a position with cover. Raced wide and without cover from the 600m when attempting to improve.
 
 
Race 7: TICKETS ON SALE NOW - 2024 LADBROKES GATTON CUP SATURDAY 29TH JUNE CLASS 1 HANDICAP         (1600m)
 
Correct weight was delayed allowing Stewards to view footage of the home straight regarding a marginal brush between DARK THINKER and BETTER BE SLICK over the concluding stages and whether there were grounds for an objection. Once satisfied that there were no grounds for objection, correct weight was declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.
 
BETTER BE SLICK – Shifted out and brushed DARK THINKER over the concluding stages.
 
PRADO – Slow to begin. Near the 1100m, shifted out and obliged to be steadied from the heels of LITTLE SHOW. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
SAXON SLAYER – Jockey R. Jamieson reported the gelding was inclined to lay-out throughout the event. Laid out under pressure in the home straight proving difficult to ride out.
 
BRAIN FOG – Began awkwardly and bumped. Over-raced throughout the early and middle stages and shifted wider. Raced wide and without cover for the remainder of the event.
 
DARK THINKER – Laid out under pressure in the home straight. Brushed with BETTER BE SLICK over the concluding stages.
 
EL KABONG – Slow to begin.

LITTLE SHOW – Began awkwardly and bumped. Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
CYGNET RIVER – From the wider barrier shifted behind runners in the early stages to obtain a position with cover.
 
BUIN ROAD – Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
CONEY ISLAND BABY – Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
 
Race 8: FALVEY'S HOTEL GATTON - OFFICIAL AFTERPARTY 2024 LADBROKES GATTON CUP 29 JUNE BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1400m)
 
Correct weight was delayed allowing Stewards to view the dead heat photo between SEMPREINTE and IS SWEET for 4th place. Once satisfied that there was no margin present, correct weight was declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.
 
SUISSE SCANDAL (NZ) – Approaching the 1100m momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of POWER FLASH (A. Jones) which shifted in when not fully clear. Jockey A. Jones was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding. Raced keenly in the early stages and for some distance thereafter. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
POWER FLASH – Bumped rounding the home turn. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
IMPERIONESS – Bumped on jumping. Approaching the 1200m, steadied when OUTWITTED (J. Huxtable) shifted in when not fully clear. Jockey J. Huxtable was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
BELYAEV – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
 
ATLANTIC ROYAL – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to bled from both nostrils for the first time. Trainer P. Jenkins was advised that the gelding would be stood down from racing pursuant to AR79(4) for 3 months and must trial or gallop 1000m to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to being permitted to race again.

HUSSY EMPRESS – Carried wider and bumped rounding the home-turn when IS SWEET laid out. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
MISS ZERMATT – Buffeted between runners on jumping and lost ground.
 
SEBRING'S ROSE – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.
 
IS SWEET (NZ) – Began awkwardly and bumped. Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid out rounding the home-turn carrying HUSSY EMPRESS wider and bumped. Approaching the 100m was checked and lost its rightful running. Jockey G. Cartwright the rider of HUSSY EMPRESS pleaded guilty to a charge under AR131(a) for careless riding in that approaching the 100m, she did permit her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of IS SWEET, resulting in that runner having to check and lose its rightful running. Jockey G. Cartwright’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 12 days, commencing at midnight 22nd of June 2024 and concluding at midnight the 4th of July 2024. In assessing penalty, Stewards considered the interference and carelessness to be in the mid-range, Jockey Cartwrights guilty plea and record in relation to the rule.
