OFFICIALS
Chairman of Stewards – E. Tickner
Stewards – B. Wright, S. Fletcher, A. Schofield & D. McMahon
GENERAL
When Jockey J. Huxtable was unavailable and Jockey C. Taylor, Apprentice J. Williams were indisposed and not riding at the meeting, rider replacements were made as per the Stewards’ Race-day Summary. Both Jockey Taylor and Apprentice Williams were advised they would require clearances prior to riding again.
Stewards approved the following overweights:
Race 2 – COLONEL PARKER – J. Stanley (+0.5kg) – 56.5kg
Race 8 – BUDDY’S TALE – H. Phillips (+1kg) – 55kg
Race 3 - Following a report from the Clerk of Scales, Ms D. McMahon, Jockey L. Tarrant (GRANDEUR ROSE) subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR185 in that after weighing out in a lighter set of boots, of which he was then directed to ensure he fulfilled his engagement in, he did change his boots after weighing out. Jockey Tarrant was fined the sum of $300. Jockey Tarrant was subsequently advised of his rights to an appeal.
Race 4 and Race 6 – Licensed Trainer R. Tyrell was interviewed following a report from the Compliance Assurance Team that his two runners engaged at the meeting, ROCKARTA in Race 4 and WHISTLING SPIRIT in Race 6, were both identified with haematomas and swelling to the left side jugular vein, when a race-day inspection was completed at his registered training location. Mr Tyrell stated both runners had been treated with Metacam, in the morning period of Saturday 19 October 2024, a routine stable procedure, administered in accordance with the recommended guidelines for the medication. When asked to produce treatment records, it was established that treatment records for the stable had not been updated since Tuesday, 3 September 2024. Both runners subsequently underwent a veterinary examination after arriving on-course. On the advice provided by the Race-Day Veterinarian, and the evidence from Mr Tyrell, after consideration from Stewards, both runners were permitted to start. Pre-race blood samples were taken from both runners for analysis.
Subsequently Mr Tyrell was issued with the following two charges:
Charge 1 – Under the provisions of AR104(1), that as the licensed trainer of ROCKRATA and WHISTLING SPIRIT which were engaged in Races 4 and 6 respectively at Gatton on Tuesday, 22 October 2024, he did fail to record veterinary treatments, specifically the medication Metacam, which was administered to these two runners on Saturday, 19 October 2024 in any form of official record. It was further noted that no treatment records had been completed for the stable since Tuesday, 3 September 2024.
Charge 2 – Under the provisions of AR105(1)(d), that as the licensed trainer of ROCKRATA and WHISTLING SPIRIT, he did fail to report as soon as practical after acceptances had been conducted for the race-meeting, that following a treatment given to runners on Saturday, 19 October 2024, that were engaged at Gatton on Tuesday, 22 October 2024, this treatment had resulted in both runners presenting with haematomas and swelling to the left side jugular vein which may have affected the horses’ performances in their respective races.
Mr Tyrell subsequently pleaded guilty to both charges.
Mr Tyrell was subsequently fined the sum of $500 for each charge ($1000 totality). In assessing penalty, Stewards noted the seriousness of both charges, that the circumstances surrounding both charges, aggravated general penalty precedents for breaches of such rules, Mr Tyrell’s unblemished record in relation to both rules, forthright evidence and guilty plea. Stewards further noted the need for both specific and general deterrence to not only Mr Tyrell, but the industry as a whole. Mr Tyrell was subsequently advised of his rights to an appeal.

Prior to correct weight, Stewards considered an objection lodged by apprentice P. Carter, the rider of the fifth placed BOITUMELO against ORSETTO (M. Hellyer) being declared second, alleging interference near the 900m. In assessing penalty, Stewards noted Apprentice Carter’s inexperience in race-riding.
