GENERAL

Stewards approved the following overweight allowances at today’s meeting-

Race 3 – BANTAMWEIGHT – Sean Cormack +1/2kg
Race 6 – HEDONIE – Chris Taylor +1kg

Race 1: KPI QTIS Three-Year-Old BENCHMARK 65 Handicap 1200 metres

WHERE'S TEKAY NOW – Knuckled on jumping, resulting in the rider becoming unbalanced and the gelding settling further back than anticipated. Apprentice J Molloy advised that despite beginning awkwardly, he was unable to offer any further explanation in relation to the below market expectation performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

CASROCK – Began awkwardly. Raced three-wide with cover throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Jockey G Cartwright was reprimand pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m.

PRINCE OF MARAKESH – Began awkwardly. Raced three-wide without cover throughout.

Race 2: RITCHIE BROTHERS AUCTIONEERS Class 2 Handicap 1900 metres

ZIPPY POWER (GER) – Forced wider on the track by another runner exiting the home straight on the first occasion. Near the 1400m, was checked from heels due to the moderate tempo.

APATAKI (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Hung out from the 600m. Stewards questioned jockey C Robertson in relation to tactics adopted whereby the gelding settled further forward than its established pattern. Jockey Robertson advised that he was issued no specific instructions by connections, however prior to the event he had formed the view that SHADYVALE STORM was the only speed in the event and therefore he elected to ride APATAKI along in the early stages with the view of possibly settling in a more forward position. Jockey Robertson went on to state that as a result of his urgings in the first 50m of the event, and with the moderate early tempo, he was able to obtain a forward position without continuing to pressure the gelding. Stewards, bearing in mind the speed map of the event which demonstrated a lack of pace in the event, took the matter no further other than to advise jockey Robertson that should he elect to ride any horse contrary to its established pattern, that he should notify stewards prior to the event. Jockey C Robertson was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.

HARBELLE – Slow to begin. Making the turn out of the home straight on the first occasion, improved onto heels and shifted out abruptly. Due to the moderate temp, over raced at heels for a considerable distance in the early and middle stages. When asked to comment on the performance of the mare, apprentice C Collis advised that in his opinion, the slow early tempo was the major contributing factor in relation to the performance particularly when after being slow to begin, he was forced to obtain a trailing position in the event rather than being able to lead the event. Stewards noted the explanation.

SHADYVALE STORM – Near the 250m, was disappointed for a run between APATAKI and RENAULT which shifted out when being corrected by its rider after making contact with the running rail. Raced greenly when placed under pressure in the home straight.

HE'S VIRAL (NZ) – Near the 1800m, steadied when awkwardly placed at heels. Making the turn out of the home straight on the first occasion, commenced to race ungenerously and shifted wider on the track. Raced wide from the 1200m.

RENAULT – Due to transport difficulties which resulted in the gelding arriving on course late, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Forced wider on the track by another runner exiting the home straight on the first occasion. Near the 1400m, was checked from heels due to the moderate tempo. Due to the slow tempo, was allowed to stride forward by its rider near the 1200m to obtain the leading position approaching the 1000m.

Race 3: RAW METAL CORPORATION Maiden Handicap 1900 metres

ZOUCAN TOUCAN – Near the 1200m, was allowed to stride forward to obtain the leading position near the 1000m. Apprentice B Wheeler was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.

VON CRUMB – Began awkwardly. Near the 900m, when shifting out to improve, bumped with another runner and became unbalanced. On returning to scale, jockey E Chaves reported that the gelding travelled well until a point approaching the home turn, where when placed under pressure, immediately came under pressure, and failed to run on in the home straight. Trainer L Freedman was at a loss to explain the poor performance other than the gelding may have got its tongue over the bit and choked down during the event. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer L Freedman advised that he would have an endoscopic examination carried out on the gelding following the event and should any abnormality become apparent, he would report to stewards.

JOYBELLS – After being crossed near the 1000m, attempted to shift to a one-off position, however, was prevented from doing so by NEWMARKET MISS, and as a result bumped with that runner before being steadied from heels.

BANTAMWEIGHT (NZ) – Near the 900m, bumped by another runner and as a result was forced wider.

Race 4: INTERFACE LANDSCAPES BENCHMARK 65 Handicap 1100 metres

DUBAI NIGHTS – Raced keenly in the early stages.

EXLOVER – Began awkwardly. Laid out rounding the home turn.

DREAM ENTITY – Slow to begin. Near the 400m, bumped heavily by REALITY which shifted out to secure clear running. Apprentice B Wheeler, the rider of REALITY was advised to exercise more care when shifting in the future. Laid in under pressure in the early stages of the home straight.

Race 5: DEMEX Maiden Plate 1200 metres

MENOTTI – For some distance passing the 1000m, raced ungenerously whilst being restrained to obtain a position with cover. Laid in for the majority of the event.

THE BRONX BULL – Began awkwardly and then shifted in bumping another runner.

WAR HOPE – Began only fairly and was then bumped on two occasions shortly after the start. Raced three-wide with cover throughout. Jockey M Hellyer was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m.

TAUCITY – Raced three-wide without cover throughout.

FRIGHTENED – Bumped shortly after the start and lost ground.
