QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT GOLD COAST TURF CLUB GOLD COAST – SATURDAY 18 MARCH 2023 WEATHER – Fine TRACK RATING – Synthetic RAIL – True OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – P Zimmermann.Stewards – R Hanson, D McMahon, P Reardon, O LeggClerk of Scales – S ByattJudge – S McMahon, S MallyonVeterinarian – Dr N GaskellSwab Attendants – K Kilpatrick, L BobeszkoStarter – S Marr GENERAL Stewards approved the following jockey to ride overweight- Race 3 – Todd Banks +1kg at 55kg Race 1: CARBINE CLUB BENCHMARK 70 Handicap 2000 metres LUCKY EXCHANGE – When questioned regarding tactics adopted (in the presence of senior rider M Hellyer) apprentice C Collis, stated that there were no specific instructions issued other than to allow the gelding to settle where comfortable in the field. Apprentice Collis was conscious of the recent form of LETS TORQUE A DEAL, which had led by similar margins in a recent start, and began to pressure his mount from the 600m in an attempt to close the margin. Apprentice Collis felt that by allowing LUCKY EXCHANGE to quicken earlier, it may have had a detrimental effect on the geldings finishing effort. Stewards on review of the film noted his comments. Apprentice C Collis was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(5) for using his whip excessively in the event, that being on 16 occasions. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. LETS TORQUE A DEEL – When asked to comment regarding tactics adopted apprentice A Donald stated that the gelding over raced, in particular when leaving the 1400m, and rather than fight against the gelding she allowed it to stride. Apprentice Donald also suggested to trainer L Manzelmann to perhaps trial a different bit in an attempt to get the gelding to settle in its races. Apprentice A Donald was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m. THE HOUSEMAN – When asked to comment on the gelding’s performance, Jockey S Karlsson stated that THE HOUSMAN failed to travel comfortably throughout and proved very disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Race 2: MARTIN COLLINS BENCHMARK 62 Handicap 1200 metres DANAWI – Slow to begin. Jockey N Thomas reported that in his opinion the gelding did not appreciate racing on the synthetic surface. LATE NIGHT DEVIL – Raced ungenerously for a short distance near the 800m when the pace slackened. Race 3: TAB Class 3 Handicap 1540 metres FREEDOM AVENUE – Raced keenly in the middle stages. DANEROCK – Bounded on jumping and as a result was slow to begin. DOTNED – Began awkwardly. Apprentice C Collis was reminded of his obligations to fully test his mount through to the line. Race 4: GRANT GOLDIE MEMORIAL Maiden Plate 1200 metres KLONDIKE STRIKE – Raced wide throughout. LA FUSEE – Trainer G Thornton was reprimanded pursuant to LR67(1) for failing to notify a rider within the prescribed time. NICE WATER – Jockey C Bayliss reported that the gelding raced ungenerously and was inclined to lay out throughout. Trainer J Bruce was advised that the gelding would be required to trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to next racing. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. BOITUMELO – After contacting the running rail behind the barriers, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. FACETIOUS – Apprentice B Wheeler was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m. SWANIC BOOM – Raced keenly approaching the 900m. Raced wide for the majority. Jockey Spinks reported that the mare was quite agitated behind the barriers prior to the start and was inclined to over race, which in his opinion had a detrimental affect on its finishing effort. Race 5: CERTIS SECURITY Class 1 Plate 1050 metres AGARN – Blundered shortly after the start. DOUBLE COCO – Near the 200m, when tiring, raced in restricted room to the inside of MR TANGLES which rolled in, and FAV’S FLYER which shifted out before being corrected. Apprentice S Champkin reported that her mount over raced in the early stages and proved difficult to settle. FAV'S FLYER – Bumped on jumping and became unbalanced. I AM AZZURRO – Slow to begin, then hampered between runners and lost ground. LYNCHED – Slow to begin. Near the 900m, raced in restricted room and lost considerable ground when I AM AZZURRO shifted out and LUMERAI was laying in despite the efforts of its rider. Raced wide throughout. Jockey A Spinks reported that the gelding resented the kick back. MR TANGLES – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. LUMERAI – Slow to begin. Near the 900m, laid in and proved difficult to ride. Raced wide and continued to lay in for the remainder of event. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer G Richardson was advised that the mare would be required to officially trial prior to next racing. Jockey H Richardson was assessed by the QAS officials after this event after complaining of pain in her right shoulder and was subsequently cleared to fulfil her remaining engagement. SEA COMMITS – Began very awkwardly and shifted out. Held up approaching the home turn. Jockey M Hellyer reported that in his opinion the filly was not suited racing on the synthetic surface and did not let down as expected in the home straight. Race 6: AQUIS STALLIONS Maiden Handicap 1900 metres BANTAMWEIGHT (NZ) – After rearing and falling over in the parade area, was declared a late scratching by order of the stewards at 4:06pm. Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on BANTAMWEIGHT be refunded with the following deductions to apply – 1st – 2c the win, 5c the place2nd – 5c the place3rd – 7c the place A veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. GRIPPING – Near the 850m, obliged to steady from the heels of DEVINE FALLS which laid in. LADY TOWNSON (NZ) – Slow to begin. IS THAT YOU ETHEL – Apprentice B Wheeler was reminded of his obligations to fully test his mount through to the line. DEVINE FALLS – Near the 850m, laid in. Near the 600m, obliged to steady from the heels of a tiring runner, before shifting wider. Trainer G Sitek was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s racing manners. MISS MANSFIELD – Blundered on jumping. Commenced to lose ground passing the 600m. VALE STREET – Commenced to buck shortly after the start. Trainer K Hickmott was advised that the gelding would be required to officially trial prior to next racing. WANDILLA – Raced wide throughout. Race 7: SKY RACING QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate 1200 metres CANYOUFEELIT – Jockey N Tomizawa was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m. POWERALONG – Raced wide throughout. ROGER EXPRESS (NZ) – Put in an awkward stride near the 850m. Raced very wide throughout. Trainer B Mair indicated that she would not start the gelding on the Gold Coast poly surface as it was reluctant to stride out due to the kickback. COCO JEWEL – Raced wide throughout. MONAZEL – Raced wide throughout. NORTHERN PLAYER – Began awkwardly. Raced greenly in the early stages. Eased down from the 350m. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer A Sawden was advised that the filly would be required to officially trial prior to next racing.
