QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT GOLD COAST TURF CLUB SATURDAY 25 MARCH 2023 WEATHER – Overcast TRACK RATING – Synthetic RAIL – True OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – P ZimmermannStewards – K Daly, D McMahon, P Reardon, O LeggClerk of Scales – S ByattJudge – S McMahon, M LincolnVeterinarian – G CavanaughSwab Attendants – K Kilpatrick, L BobeszkoStarter – S Marr GENERAL As Apprentice J Molloy was not riding due to acceptable reasons, he was replaced as per the Steward’s summary. Race 1: TOTAL TOOLS BURLEIGH WATERS QTIS Three-Year-OldMaiden Handicap 1540 metres BETTER CLASS – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after blood was present in its left nostril on arrival at the barriers, and was subsequently declared a late scratching by order of the stewards, acting on veterinary advice at 12:47pm. Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on BETTER CLASS be refunded with the following deductions to apply – 1st – 9c the win, 5c the place2nd – 20c the place A post-race veterinary examination of BETTER CLASS determined that the likely cause of the presence of blood in its nostril was caused by trauma. Trainer J Wallace was advised that BETTER CLASS would require a veterinary clearance including the results of an endoscopic examination prior to next racing. Trainer J Wallace fined $500 pursuant to AR105(1)(d), in that he failed to report to stewards an occurrence that BETTER CLASS, had become cast in its stall the day prior that being 24/03/2023. Stewards when considering penalty acknowledged Mr Wallace’s’ exemplary record. Stable hand P Wallace was found guilty of a charge pursuant to AR232(i) in that he gave false and misleading information at an inquiry. The particulars being following the running of race 1, after BETTER CLASS was withdrawn prior to the event on veterinary advice when blood was present in its left nostril and during a later post-race veterinary examination conducted by Dr G Cavanaugh, Mr P Wallace made comment that the gelding had become cast and bled all day, that being the day before, Friday 24th of March 2023. These comments were also confirmed by QRIC stewards P Reardon and O Legg. When assessing the blood in the nostril of BETTER CLASS, Dr Cavanaugh was satisfied that it was likely caused from a pre-existing blood clot and therefore the nasal bleed did not constitute or warrant a stand down pursuant to AR79 period for BETTER CLASS. Stewards when considering the seriousness of the charge, weighed heavily on the personal circumstances provided by Mr P Wallace, particularly his living arrangements, family dependants and personal circumstances. However, Stewards when considering the charge and the need for penalties to be seen as a deterrent suspended Mr P Wallace’s stable hand licence for a period of 3 months to commence midnight the 25th of March and to expire midnight the 25th of June 2023.
