Race 4: HYNE TIMBER Maiden Handicap 1540 metres

BOSTON OF TUFFY – Held up and unable to obtain clear running near the 700m when awkwardly placed between runners until approaching the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight. Jockey J. Guthman-Chester was questioned regarding tactics adopted. He stated that from a more favourable barrier than last start, his instructions were to ride in a more conservative manner and allow the gelding to finish off the race. Jockey Guthman-Chester further added that on jumping he would have preferred to settle a pair further in advance, however that was unattainable due to MY LAWLESS LADY which was racing keenly during the early stages to his inside, therefore he was then obliged to settle midfield. Trainer P. Robl confirmed these instructions and added that whilst he would have preferred BOSTON OF TUFFY to settle another pair forward, he did note that this may have had an adverse effect on the gelding’s finishing effort. Stewards when considering the explanation, note the circumstances.

ITALIAN AWARD – Raced keenly during the early stages. Raced wide throughout. Inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.

A post-race veterinary examination determined that the gelding had sustained an injury to its near fore fetlock, and acting on veterinary advice ZATARA was euthanised on humane grounds. Swab samples were taken from the gelding.
