D’Avila advised he was asked to take up a forward position from the wider gate, however it was not his intention to lead. He added as the gelding was racing keenly, he was obliged to cross and lead, however despite his efforts in the middle stages, continued to race keenly.

Race 2: SCOTPAC CLASS 1 PLATE    1540M

BRINGME – Approaching and rounding the turn near the 1200m, laid out.

CUE TO CONQUER – App J. Williams was fined $400 pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m, 1 more than permitted.

NOT A FAT BOY – Slow into stride. Jockey M. McDonald was fined $300 pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 8 occasions prior to the 100m, 3 more than permitted.

RUN RAMPANT – Late withdrawal at 9:58am on veterinary advice. Co-trainer G. Lane was advised the gelding would require a veterinary clearance prior to next racing.

SADDLES – Bumped on jumping. Near the 1400m, got its head up when being steadied from the heels of LEINSTER. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, App E. Lang stated she was asked to take up a rearward position on the gelding with the view that there would be sufficient speed in the race to allow her mount to stride freely in that position, she said in accordance with her instructions, she attempted to settle SADDLES at the rear of the field, however in the early and middle stages the gelding raced keenly and resented the kickback. App Lang said when the pace of the race quickened from passing the 900m, her mount was left flat footed so she endeavoured to work the gelding into the race without bustling it, but then commenced to ride the gelding strongly from the 600m. She added SADDLES made ground under pressure in the straight and in her opinion, finished the race off well. App Lang conceded prior to looking at the films of the race that in the middle stages she would have been best to allow SADDLES to stride and even race wide without cover to avoid the kickback. Trainer A. Campton confirmed the instructions, noting that SADDLES led at its previous start over 1600m, which was not the intention and did not finish the race off at that occasion. He said that for this reason he instructed app Lang to ride the horse back with cover, as has been its normal pattern. Trainer A. Campton was reminded of his obligations to advise Stewards of any change of tactics under AR100(1)(a). A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Race 3: BIZCAP CLASS 1 PLATE 1050M

BURGUNDER – Raced wide without cover throughout.

MY MOSES – Began awkwardly. App S. Champkin the gelding, which tailed the field for most of the event, laid out in the home straight.

Race 4: COLLAS MORO ROSS BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP         1900M

SHADYVALE STORM – When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, App E. Lang stated her instructions were to lead and allow the gelding to roll along in front. She said she was unable to lead, so she elected to sit to the outside of WONFORWAZZA, until the 700m where she was asked to improve. She added the gelding responded when under pressure until weakening passing the 200m. Trainer P. Butterworth confirmed the instructions, however expected the gelding to have a soft lead. He expressed disappointment with the ride and believed app Lang should have attempted to take a sit off WONFORWAZZA in the middle stages. Apprentice Lang was notified in the circumstances of today’s race, Stewards were in agreement with trainer P. Butterworth in that she should have attempted to take a sit off WONFORWAZZA in the middle stages, which would have allowed some respite for the gelding, in an endeavour to help SHADYVALE STORM finish the race off better. Apprentice E. Lang was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.

WONFORWAZZA – Began awkwardly and shifted out. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, jockey M. Cahill said it was his intention to lead, however the gelding began awkwardly and when SHADYVALE STORM, worked to its outside approaching the 1600m, it was his intention to make that gelding work harder before allowing it to cross. M. Cahill stated WONFORWAZZA then commenced to race keenly and laid out passing the 1500m and again passing the 1400m, carrying SHADYVALE STORM wider. He added the gelding continued to race keenly in the middle stages with SHADYVALE STORM racing half a length to the outside and in the circumstances, he felt he was obligated to allow WONFORWAZZA to stride. He further added the gelding commenced to weaken from passing the 400m and was eased down from the 150m.

BLUE SWIMMER – Jockey M. Hellyer reported the gelding felt a miss through the run and was eased down from 400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer A. Perks was advised the gelding must perform to the satisfaction of Stewards in a trial prior to next racing.

BEFOREHAND – As Jockey J. Morris was overweight, he was replaced as the rider of the gelding by jockey S. Galloway. Subsequently, jockey J. Morris was fined $200 pursuant to AR190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight.
