Jockey K. Matheson was fined $200 for failing to fulfil his accepted rides in Race 5 FLYING BIRDS and Race 6 BIE’RES.

Race 1: RITCHIE BROTHERS CLASS 5 HANDICAP 1100 M

The start of this event was delayed owing to QAS being required to attend to an oncourse patron.

GEE BEE ESS – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Laid out in the middle stages and approaching the home turn. Apprentice S. Champkin was reprimanded pursuant to AR 132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip 7 times prior to the 100m, two more than permitted.

GALBALAN – Began awkwardly and lost ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying cardiac arrythmia. Trainer B. Mallyon was advised GALBALAN would require a veterinary clearance, including the results of an ECG; and complete an Official Trial to the satisfaction of Stewards, prior to racing again.

Race 2: LANTRAK RESOURCE MANAGEMENT MAIDEN HANDICAP 1900 M

RHODES – Bumped after the start.

HEREDITARY (NZ) – Change of tactics-to be ridden further forward. Raced in a handy position. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

TRUST A KITTY – Slow to begin.

I'M A RULER – Slow to begin. Stewards permitted Apprentice J. Franklin to only claim 1kg of his 2kg allowance. Apprentice J. Franklin was fined $100 pursuant to AR 143(14)(a) in that he failed to claim his full allowance.

Race 3: INTERFACE LANDSCAPES BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP    2000 M

MAUI (NZ) – Over raced in the early and middle stages. Carried wider passing the 800m. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages. When questioned regarding her riding of the gelding from the 500m until on straightening, Apprentice C. Waddell explained when she was attempting to get to the outside of the heels of FIVE STAR DECANTER approaching the 500m, her horse commenced to lay out as it rounded the home turn, carrying FASTNET ANGEL wider. She said it was not her intention to race as wide as she did at that point and was not aware she had left room enough for runners to improve on the inside. Consequently, SEA TREASURES (NZ), which was racing to the inside of FIVE STAR DECANTER, then shifted to the outside of that gelding into the run that presented when FASTNET ANGEL shifted out. After considering all the circumstances, Apprentice C. Waddell was strongly reminded of her obligations to always have sufficient control of her horse and not to leave her riding open for query.

FASTNET ANGEL (NZ) – Raced wide from the 800m. Bumped and forced wider leaving the 500m.

SEA TREASURES (NZ) – Apprentice J. Franklin explained he was asked to settle the gelding with cover. He said from a wide draw he felt he would have been obliged to race wide without cover, therefore he elected to steady SEA TREAUSRES (NZ) to find cover at the rear of the field approaching the 1600m. He added it was not his intention to settle that far back, but he was able to make ground during the course of the race to be in a midfield position approaching the 600m. He further added, he was of the view the gelding is best suited to being ridden in this manner. Trainer M. Labahn confirmed the instructions and added it was not the intention to lead at SEA TREASURES (NZ) previous start but to settle back off the pace. Mrs Labahn was reminded of her obligations to advise of any proposed change of tactics of runners from their previous start.

ZOUY'S COMET – Slow to begin. Lost off-fore plate in running.

WINTER THORN (IRE) – Raced three until passing the 1000m.

MERLOMANN – Trainer K. Loy advised she would notify Stewards in the following days if anything was to come to light following today’s performance.

MINTO'S POWER – After being loaded in the barriers, reared, become cast, removed and declared a late withdrawal at 3:28pm on veterinary advice. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards declared all successful bets placed on MINTO’S POWER to be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st – 21c win, 8c place.
2nd – 26c place
3rd – 22c place

Trainer K. Loy was advised MINTO’S POWER would be required to compete to the satisfaction of Stewards in a jump out, prior to racing again.

SEEYA LATER GATER – Bumped shortly after the start and lost ground. Held up and had difficulty securing clear running from the 600m up until the 400m. For a short distance on straightening, laid in and became awkward at the heels of VERALISE.

PARCHEMIN – Shifted out at the start.

REMOMIA – Raced wide throughout.

SHE'S WORTH IT – Inconvenienced shortly after the start.

Race 5: TERRECO RESOURCES CLASS 1 HANDICAP         1200 M

PEPERONCINO – Shifted in at the start and bumped COODARDY.

EVERLAST – Shifted out at the start and bumped COODARDY. Laid out from the 800m and until entering the home straight. Rounding the home turn, became awkwardly placed on the heels of UPLOADS. Trainer L. Hartley advised it is now the intention to not race the gelding on the synthetic surface in the near future.

UPLOADS – Slow to begin. Rounding the home turn laid out and away from ZUMAIA.

ZUMAIA – Shifted out to improve rounding the home turn.

COODARADY – Hampered after the start and lost ground.

Race 6: KPI CONSTRUCTION SERVICES RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 HANDICAP 1540 M

SAINT MARTIN – Began awkwardly.

BOSTON OF TUFFY – Raced wide with cover from the 800m.

BOARDIE – Slow to begin. Raced in restricted room during the early stages of the event.

DEVINE FALLS – Shifted its near hind plate in the enclosure. As it could not be re-fitted, the off-hind plate was also removed, and Stewards granted permission for the horse to run barefooted behind. Raced wide from the 1000m. Forced wider at the 800m when DOUBLE QUICK shifted out. Commenced to give ground from the 500m and was eased down in the home straight. Trainer G. Sitek advised the stallion would now be retired from racing. Nonetheless, Trainer G. Sitek was advised DEVINE FALLS would be required to Officially Trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.

SUDDEN SUSPECT – When questioned regarding his riding tactics between the 1400m and 400m, Jockey W. D’ Availa explained it was expected SUDDEN SUSPECT would race at the rear of the field and after jumping on par, commenced to lose contact from around the 1400m. He stated he was making efforts to keep contact with the field from the 1400m by slapping the gelding down the shoulder, however there was no response. He further added that he considered easing SUDDEN SUSPECT out of the race approaching the home turn, however when other runners commenced to weaken, he elected to apply more pressure including use of the whip and consequently SUDDEN SUSPECT made ground, in his opinion, on weakening runners. He added it was his view that SUDDEN SUSPECT would be suited to a longer journey. Jockey W. D’Avila was told his riding in the early and middle stages lacked the vigour expected of a rider of his experience and he should have made a greater effort to try to improve his position between the 1400m and 400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer B Murray will be interviewed at later date regarding the matter.

TORQUE ESPAGNA – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

WINSTON BLUE – Hampered shortly after the start and lost ground.
