GOLD COAST TURF CLUB

SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 2000
WEATHER: FINE TRACK: GOOD

RAIL: TRUE POSITION – “ORIGINAL TRACK”

STEWARDS’ MR T BAILEY (CHAIRMAN), MR J HAIGH, MR J GRAHAM,
PANEL: MR D TAPSALL and MR M TUTT (CADET)

RACE 1 – DOLPHIN REWARD (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,110 METRES

Leaving the 500 metres SHARLEE LASS shifted in momentarily crowding JEWEL OF DENIAL and causing VIDID STORM which was following to be checked. In all the circumstances no direct action was taken however, A BAKER (SHARLEE LASS) was issued with a reprimand.

On entering the home straight PATRICK’S BOUNTY shifted out abruptly to improve resulting in DENYM LASS which was following having to be steadied to avoid that horse’s heels. M LISTER (PATRICK’S BOUNTY) was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.

Approaching the 200 metres COUNTING GAPS shifted in and away from PATRICK’S BOUNTY and as a result made contact with GLENSEA.

Inside the 200 metres ALANNITE shifted in momentarily causing SHARLEE LASS to continue to shift in when not clear of GREY GAL causing that horse to be checked. Due to contributing circumstances no direct action was taken however, A BAKER (SHARLEE LASS) was issued with a severe reprimand for failing to make a greater effort to keep his mount on a straight course.

Inside the final 200 metres ALANNITE had difficulty in obtaining clear running.

Stewards questioned Trainer H NORMAN regarding the improved performance of PATRICK’S BOUNTY today and he explained that the gelding had been working well on the track however, raced very disappointingly at its first run back from a spell at Beaudesert on 14 January 2000. He added that he had planned to give PATRICK’S BOUNTY one more start after today and if it continued to race poorly it would be retired. He also indicated that there was very little stable support for the horse. H NORMAN’s explanations were noted.

RACE 2 – SIX WEEKS TO “SUPERBOWL” (TWO-YEARS OLD) HANDICAP – 1,110 METRES

Leaving the 500 metres KENTUCKY FLAME shifted out abruptly to improve and in doing so made heavy contact with DESPERATE CAUSE forcing that horse much wider on the track. Due to this incident S GALLOWAY (DESPERATE CAUSE) lost the use of his right stirrup iron for a short distance. A PARRAMORE (KENTUCKY FLAME) was issued with a reprimand and advised against similar style of riding.

M BENNETT (EASY GRACE) was fined $50 for returning to scale in excess of ½ kg over his declared weight.

RACE 3 – JIM BEAM BLACK MAIDEN PLATE – 1,205 METRES

Trainer P WHEATLEY was fined $50 for failing to have KNATMEG on course by the prescribed time.

ARKLE was a late withdrawal at 1:54 p.m. acting on veterinary advice when it was found to be lame in the near fore leg. Prior to the announcement of ‘correct weight’ all monies invested on ARKLE were ordered to be refunded with no further alteration to betting.

Leaving the 1,000 metres NORMANTON was checked when crowded for room between KNATMEG which shifted in momentarily and BATTLESYND which shifted out when being restrained off the heels of BAKATIME.

In the early and middle stages of the race BELLE JUDY hung in quite severely.

For some distance in the early stages of the straight PAVLODAR had difficulty in obtaining clear running.

K BELL (ADJOURN) reported that he had difficulty riding his mount out in the straight when it was inclined to lay in.

APP. A MORRISON (BAKATIME) reported he accidentally dropped his whip near the 200 metres.

RACE 4 – VIGIL (CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 2,015 METRES

GUNDAIR reared at the start and lost considerable ground.

In the middle stages of the race GOD’S SIGN which was inclined to over-race had to be restrained off the heels of ANSELL’S DANCER.

RACE 5 – TINY’S FINITO (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,600 METRES

Leaving the 500 metres until near the 200 metres FOREMAN ALI was unable to improve when disappointed for clear running.

For a major part of the straight VIBRATIONS was unable to obtain clear running and near the 100 metres was shifted out abruptly to do so.

RACE 6 – CATNIPPED (CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,110 METRES

RORAZINO jumped away awkwardly.

N JOLLY (GALACTIC ROMEO) was charged with careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in leaving the 600 metres when not clear of ST. ESTE resulting in that horse having to be checked. After considering further submissions from N JOLLY, the stewards were of the view that some doubt existed as to whether N JOLLY was in a position to relieve the pressure without clipping the heels of GUDWILL which was racing to his outside. In those circumstances the stewards did not believe the charge could be sustained and therefore no further action was taken.

The club’s veterinary surgeon reported that GALACTIC ROMEO sustained a laceration to the outside of the off fore leg during the race.

RACE 7 – PIMPALA SON (CLASS 3) HANDICAP – 1,205 METRES

The explanation tendered by Trainer J GLARE for the apparent failure to declare a rider for HOT KEY by the prescribed time was accepted.

As M LISTER was ruled unfit by the club’s doctor, L HARRIS was originally substituted as the rider. After considering some subsequent submissions by L HARRIS, stewards then permitted A BAKER to be substituted as the rider of HOT KEY.

RACE 8 –STAR COVET WELTER – 2,015 METRES

No report.

EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
