RACE 1 – DEFINITELY OURS HANDICAP – 1400 METRES
ELECTION DAY was slow away.
INAPPROPRIATE jumped very awkwardly and lost ground.
D. KELLY (INAPPROPRIATE) pleaded guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in near the 1000 metres causing crowding to REGEMO ROAD which in turn shifted in causing PENCOURT to be checked. D. KELLY’S licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of eight (8) meetings to commence midnight Wednesday 14th March, 2000 and to expire midnight Friday 24th March, 2000. This suspension is to be served consecutively with his suspension incurred at Murwillumbah on Thursday 24th February, 2000.
Inside the 200 metres RIPASYN was disappointed for clear running between CELEDSTRE and SILVER SONIC and as a result had to be steadied and shifted out.
It was noted that SILVER SONIC was obliged to race wide throughout.
Veterinary examinations of both AUGUST SUPREME and PENCOURT after the race revealed no obvious abnormalities.
Stewards questioned Trainer G. Stewart regarding the apparent change of riding tactics with MR. LEVI today as compared to its last start at the Sunshine Coast on the 13th February, 2000. He explained that due to the wide barrier draw today he instructed Jockey L. HILL to use his own discretion. He further added that when MR. LEVI was ridden back at its last start in accordance with his instructions the colt was inclined to overrace and when the field sprinted he was left flat footed, this being the reason why he took the blinkers off MR. LEVI today. His explanations were noted.
RACE 2 – VENOM HANDICAP – 1400 METRES
GATWICK EXPRESS was declared a late withdrawal at 12.34 p.m. on Veterinary advice after it was established that the gelding had sustained a puncture wound to the sole of the off fore hoof after twisting a plate. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on GATWICK EXPRESS were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 12 cents in the dollar for a win and 14 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket.
Leaving the 1000 metres RASADEL commenced to overrace and had to be restrained to avoid the heels of SAINT MACKILLOP.
S. GALLOWAY (RASADEL) reported after the race that approaching the 200 metres his mount baulked at some tyre tracks and as a result became quite unbalanced.
Shortly after this incident CAMPASSIA which shifted out to obtain clear running made contact with BOBBY JON.
RACE 3 – FOREIGN INTEREST HANDICAP – 1800 METRES
Trainer M. Tremble was fined $50.00 for failing to declare a rider for OCRETAW by the prescribed time.
KADAZZLE was slow away.
Shortly after the start OCRETAW shifted out and brushed STYLE QUEEN.
Leaving the 1300 metre mark CLASSIC FRONTIER had to be restrained to avoid the heels of STYLE QUEEN which shifted in when not quite clear. S. GALLOWAY (STYLE QUEEN) was issued with a severe reprimand and reminded of his obligations.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MISTY MISTER today Jockey N. JOLLY explained that due to the lack of early speed he elected to go forward and take up a position outside the leader in accordance with his instructions. He said that from that point his mount travelled until he placed it under pressure at the 900 metres where it failed to respond and in his view was a beaten horse from the 800 metres. Trainer G. Newham confirmed the instructions and indicated that he was satisfied with the way MISTY MISTER was ridden. He said that in his opinion the gelding is in need of a spell and this would be his recommendation to the owners.
Inside the final 200 metres CLASSIC FRONTIER shifted out under pressure making slight contact with BEYONDA on at least two occasions.
RACE 4 – GUNYATTI HANDICAP – 1300 METRES
SHOMATAR was slow away.
When questioned regarding the manner in which ODENSE was ridden today Jockey D. KELLY explained that he was able to get in a position in behind the leader however, approaching the home turn he was unable to go forward when held up behind KATIEANN and to the inside of WISH LIST. He stated that from this point on he failed to obtain clear running at any stage. His explanations were noted.
RACE 5 – GOLF FIELD HANDICAP – 1200 METRES
As T. PATTILLO was indisposed Stewards permitted A. COWIE to be substituted as the rider of MISTY TYCOON.
On jumping COME ON KENNY shifted out making heavy contact with TIGER MALT causing that horse to lose ground.
L. DEGUARA (TAVARAISE) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting her mount to shift in leaving the 1000 metres when insufficiently clear of COME ON KENNY causing that horse to be crowded in onto MISTY TYCOON which had to be checked. L. DEGUARA’S licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of eight(8) meetings to commence midnight 27th February, 2000 and to expire midnight 12th March, 2000.
As a result of this incident SHARLAD which was following had to be checked to avoid the heels of MISTY TYCOON when that horse lost ground.
For some distance in the early stages of the straight SHARLAD was disappointed for clear running.
RACE 6 – ABBEJURRAH HANDICAP – 1400 METRES
Trainer L. Kelly advised Stewards that he expected FORGING’S LAD to run an improved race today as the gelding had since been treated for a stone bruise to the near fore hoof after its last start at the Gold Coast on the 12th February, 2000. An announcement to this effect was made over the public address system.
Rounding the home turn EPIC FLYER went for a run between the running rail and POWER PACK where there was doubtful room and for the remainder of the straight could not be fully tested when in restricted room.
Stewards considered an objection lodged by N. JOLLY the rider of SEA HARVEY which finished fourth against FORGING’S LAD (D. KELLY) being declared the third placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference inside the final 200 metres. On the evidence the Stewards were of the view that after passing the 200 metres SEA HARVEY had to be checked to avoid the heels of FORGING’S LAD which shifted in. In the opinion of the Stewards the degree of interference suffered by SEA HARVEY exceeded the long neck margin between the two horses at the finish and therefore they upheld the objection and amended the placings to read as follows:-
FIRST BLUE GOWN
SECOND GOODRICH
THIRD SEA HARVEY
FOURTH FORGING’S LAD
At a later enquiry D. KELLY pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in after passing the 200 metres taking the rightful running of SEA HARVEY and as a result had to be checked to avoid FORGING’S LAD’S heels. D. KELLY’S licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of nine(9) meetings to commence midnight 14th March, 2000 and to expire midnight 25th March, 2000, to be served concurrently with the suspension incurred in Race 1.
Near the 100 metres EPIC FLYER was also accidentally struck on the nose by the whip of A. COWIE (POWER PACK).
RACE 7 – COME ON EILEEN HANDICAP – 1800 METRES
DARIUS was a late withdrawal at 12.15 p.m. on Veterinary advice when that gelding injured itself enroute to the course.
A. COWIE (HALOGEN) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that over the concluding stages he made insufficient effort to prevent his mount shifting in and as a result contributed to MAC’S RESPONSE being checked. A. COWIE’S licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of eight(8) meetings to commence midnight 1st March, 2000 and to expire midnight 12th March, 2000.
C. SMALL (DEREV) was also found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that over the concluding stages he permitted his mount to shift out whilst riding his mount along with the whip and as a result also contributed to MAC’S RESPONSE being checked. C. SMALL’S licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of eight(8) meetings to commence midnight 1st March, 2000 and to expire midnight 12th March, 2000.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of ALL IN RHYTHM Trainer Mrs J. Wright explained that at the horse’s last two starts it raced in a more forward position due to a lack of speed in the race and was much better suited today when being able to be ridden back in the field. Her explanations were noted.
RACE 8 – STYLISH CENTURY WELTER – 1800 METRES
Near the 200 metres TOUGH AS TEAK was disappointed for clear running between CHAPPEL DANCER and SUPERCUT and as a result had to be checked and shifted out to obtain clear running.
EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
