RACE 1 – POWERADE MAIDEN HANDICAP (1,200 METRES)

As D KELLY was indisposed stewards permitted the following replacements:-

Race 1 IDLER N JOLLY
Race 3 DRAGONVILLE S SHIELD
Race 5 RETIRE A BAKER
Race 7 RISING ROYAL D HAYES

LITTLE WIZ jumped away awkwardly losing ground.

KIALOA jumped out at the start taking SEA BREAK out on to COUNT VALOUR.

IDLER and MONTAIGNE came together at the start.

After leaving the 1,000 metres LIVELY LITTLE LADY commenced to over-race and had to be checked off the heels of KIALOA. LIVELY LITTLE LADY continued to race ungenerously for some distance.

RACE 2 – MT. FRANKLIN (TWO-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES

COOLUM BAY which proved difficult to load was a little slow to jump.

AQUATAI was slowly away.

LAKEVALE jumped out at the start forcing IMPOSING ROAD on to POWER AND EGO.

After travelling 200 metres BE STRONG commenced to over-race and the horse continued to race ungenerously throughout the middle stages.

Leaving the 800 metres whilst racing ungenerously and pulling hard, BE STRONG shifted in and made heavy contact with POWER AND EGO.

When the pace steadied approaching the 800 metres MALTESE MEILEE shifted out and made contact with BECKONING DANCER.

GATWICK EXPRESS lost ground when having to be eased off the heels of MALTESE MEILEE near the 800 metres.

BECKONING DANCER was caught wide after the start and raced wide for the majority of the race.

MISKARIMA was inclined to shift ground outwards when under pressure over the concluding stages.

COOLUM BAY sustained a compound fracture to the near side fore leg and was retired from the race after leaving the 500 metres. As a consequence of the nature of the injury the club’s veterinary surgeon, Dr. Jeffries, reported that COOLUM BAY was euthanased on humane grounds.

RACE 3 – SPRITE (CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES

M BENNETT (PLAN) dropped his whip rounding the home turn.

When questioned concerning MR. ORBIT’s performance, Trainer B LAMING indicated that the horse may not have been suited to dropping back in distance today from its last start over 2,200 metres. He also felt that MR. ORBIT appeared better suited when the track was rain affected. Mr Laming was instructed to inform stewards of anything that may come to his attention following the race which may have had any affect on MR. ORBIT’s disappointing performance.

RACE 4 – FANTA (CLASS 3) HANDICAP – 2,200 METRES

As N JOLLY was found to be overweight, stewards permitted the following replacements:-

Race 4 SHOTGUN A BAKER
Race 8 PRINCE RAUTAI G KILLEN

After considering N JOLLY’s explanation, no action was taken.

K BELL replaced N PAINE as the rider of GALLANT PRIDE. Following an explanation from the connections it was found that a misunderstanding had taken place in the notification of riders and no action was taken.

A COWIE was dislodged from JAY ELL during its preliminary.

THORNBOY was tightened between JAY ELL and GALLANT PRIDE at the start.

M BENNETT (THORNBOY) was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts right out to the finish of the race.

RACE 5 – BIRKBECKS BRACELET (CLASS 4) HANDICAP – 900 METRES

No report.

RACE 6 – LIFT (CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES

S SHIELD was approved as the replacement rider for A GILLETT on TIGER MALT. Following an explanation, no action was taken.

SEEN AT SEA blundered at the start.

TIGAL MALT jumped away awkwardly losing ground at the start.

BRAVE CHANCE was a little slow to begin.

After passing the 800 metres TIGER MALT had to be steadied off the heels of SEEN AT SEA. At the same time TONTORE had to be steadied off the heels of REGAL SIGN resulting in BRAVE CHANCE being taken wider on the track.

Near the 650 metres TONTORE again had to be eased off the heels of BRAVE CHANCE.

SEA DUSK (K PURDY) was inclined to hang out rounding the home turn and shifted ground outwards over the concluding stages. K PURDY was instructed to take greater measures to ensure her mounts maintain a straight course.

RACE 7 – COCA-COLA AMATIL CUP (CLASS 5) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

Trainer S CAMPBELL was fined $50 for failing to present MR ARCHIBALD to the shoeing inspector when the horse was found to be shod with oversized nails.

BEAUSOLEIL was tightened between GORGEOUS GEORGE and VINCERO when both horses shifted ground at the start.

After travelling 100 metres RISING ROYAL got its head up when restrained off the heels of SIR MARKIE.

Near the 1,200 metres when being straightened to avoid tightening LEADER MAN, BABY FACE shifted out forcing DARCY DANCER to be eased away from the hind quarters of GORGEOUS GEORGE which was inclined to shift in.

BABY FACE had a tendency to hang out rounding the home turn.

MR. ARCHIBALD had difficulty obtaining clear running inside the final 200 metres.

RACE 8 – DIET COKE (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES

LARABIA and PRINCE RAUTAI were a little slow to jump.

A MERRITT (SPRING DAY) was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts right out to the finish of the race.
