STEWARDS’ REPORTGOLD COAST TURF CLUBWednesday, 17 May 2000WEATHER: FINE TRACK: GOODRAIL: TRUE POSITIONSTEWARDS’PANEL: MR T. BAILEY (CHAIRMAN), MR S. RAILTON, MR A. REARDON, MR J. GRAHAM, MR D. TAPSALL, MR R. SANDERS ANDMR W.BIRCH (CADET) RACE 1 – CONRAD JUPITERS HANDICAP – 1400 METRESGLADMAC was slow away.Leaving the 300 metres until nearing the 150 metres LARABIA and MALTESE POWER were unable to go forward when disappointed for clear running.RACE 2 – CONRAD JUPITERS HANDICAP – 1400 METRESStewards questioned G. BIRNEY (JACK LIVES HERE) prior to this race regarding the manner in which he was to ride the gelding today in comparison to its last start at the Gold Coast on the 13th May, 2000. G. BIRNEY explained that at its first start the horse missed the start and after jumping well last Saturday he rode his mount forward however, was unable to obtain any cover and his mount overraced subsequently capitulating in the home straight. He further added that it was his intention to ride JACK LIVES HERE the same way today however, once again would be endeavouring to try and gain some cover. Stewards noted his explanation and reminded G. BIRNEY of his obligations under the Rules of Racing.On jumping LUKE’S LOOT and JACK LIVES HERE made contact.When questioned G. PALMER (EXTREME RED) reported that he was placed at a disadvantage when his saddle slipped forward leaving the 800 metres.Near the 300 metres TOAST A LADY which was commencing to weaken, had to be eased when crowded for room between EXTREME RED which shifted out slightly and LUKE’S LOOT which shifted in after making contact with ROTTON RON.Near the 150 metre mark EXTREME RED and FRAGRANCE were checked when crowded for room between SCHARNHORST which shifted out slightly and LUKE’S LOOT which shifted in when put under some pressure from ROTTON RON. In all the circumstances no direct action was taken however, C. MAUND (LUKE’S LOOT) was advised to make a greater effort to straighten his mounts sooner than he had on this occasion when they have a tendency to shift ground. Inside the final 200 metres of the race EL CARTERO was disappointed for clear running and as a result went to the line not fully tested.RACE 3 – PRIME TELEVISION HANDICAP – 1300 METRESFor some distance in the early stages of the straight SLY DANCER was disappointed for clear running behind GUY and to the inside of MIGHT AND GOLD and as a result made contact with the latter on at least two occasions.Inside the 200 metres SLY DANCER was checked and crowded for room between GUY which shifted out and MIGHT AND GOLD which shifted in and away from GASOLINE.B. STEWART (MR. CENTREFOLD) was fined the sum of $400.00 for returning to scale in excess of one-half kilo over his declared weight.RACE 4 – HONDA “QUEEN OF THE TURF” HANDICAP – 1300 METRESInside the final 200 metres INSPECT was disappointed for clear running.N. JOLLY (SPIRIT OF GRACE) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in over the concluding stages whilst riding his mount along with the whip to a point where he was insufficiently clear of SUNSILK, which had to be checked near the winning post. N. JOLLY’S licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of seven meetings to commence midnight 20th May, 2000 and to expire midnight 1st June, 2000.It was noted after the race that SUNSILK had lost its off hind plate and BLUE GOWN had suffered a laceration to the off fore leg.RACE 5 – CARBINE CLUB FLYING HANDICAP – 1200 METRESFor a major part of the home straight OBSESSED and MANNDO failed to obtain clear running.WIDE VISION was obliged to race wide throughout.RACE 6 – CONRAD JUPITERS PRIME MINISTER’S CUP – 2400 METRESREPUTED GROOM blundered on jumping.When questioned APP. J. STANLEY (KEN’S JOY) explained that leaving the 1400 metres he was placed at a distinct disadvantage after his saddle had slipped forward on his mount. He further added that once he put his mount under pressure in the straight that the saddle returned to its normal position.B. PREBBLE (ZULU ZEAL) was fined $100.00 for returning to scale in excess of one-half kilo over his declared weight.Stewards questioned Trainer N. McBurney regarding the disappointing performance of SPACE AGE today and he explained that whilst the gelding was obliged to race three horses wide for most of the race in his view the horse had jarred up. He also advised Stewards that SPACE AGE would now be sent for a spell. A Veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormality and the horse was sent to be swabbed.RACE 7 – COUNTERACT R.O.D.E. SYSTEMS KEN RUSSELL MEMORIAL – 1300 METRESJockey A. CAVALLO replaced P. CUDDIHY (MINER’S UNION). The explanation tendered from Trainer Mrs G. Heinrich regarding the matter was accepted.As a result of J. TAYLOR being dislodged in the enclosure Stewards permitted APP. N. TOMIZAWA to be substituted as the rider of DAINTY.HEROISM was slow away.Near the 1100 metre mark RAPID MAN shifted in momentarily when taken in by OMBRA DELLA SERA. This resulted in MAYO’S MUSIC shifting in abruptly causing crowding to ELITE AND POWER and DAINTY, which was checked severely.For some distance leaving the 1000 metres MAYO’S MUSIC had to be restrained off the heels of CENTONA.Leaving the 600 metres DE FRANCE which had a tendency to lay in, shifted in slightly which resulted in CENTONA which was following to clip its heels and be checked. J. BYRNE (CENTONA) explained that as a result of this incident his saddle had rolled and he was placed at a distinct disadvantage for the remainder of the race.Leaving the 500 metres MINER’S UNION had to be checked to avoid the heels of MAYO’S MAGIC which was commencing to weaken and shifted in causing DAINTY to be checked severely.A Veterinary examination of PARADIDDLE after the race revealed signs of respiratory distress.As a result of SKARLOEY pulling up a distant last Stewards ordered a Veterinary examination of the gelding which revealed the horse to be suffering from a heart irregularity. Trainer C. Higgins was advised that SKARLOEY must perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and he must submit a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness before it is permitted to race again. RACE 8 – PAUL’S A.D. HOLLINDALE STAKES WEIGHT FOR AGE – 1800 METRESFor some distance in the early part of the straight ALLEZ SUEZ was disappointed for clear running between CRÈME DE HONOR and SIREC both of which were weakening.RACE 9 – HONG KONG TOURIST ASSOCIATION HANDICAP – 1800 METRESC. DINN replaced J. TAYLOR (indisposed) as the rider of DAINTY.S. GALLOWAY replaced T. DUCKETT (indisposed) as the rider of LEADER MAN.A. CAVALLO replaced O. BOSSOM (overweight) as the rider of MR. LAMORAK. The explanation tendered by O. BOSSOM will be accepted.The start of this race was put back thirteen minutes to commence at 4.43 p.m.The start of this race was further delayed when SHAROOD cast its off hind plate in the mounting enclosure.Approaching the 1400 metres JOLLY TIP had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SHAROOD which was taken in slightly by INCENTIVES.Leaving the 800 metres SEA HARVEY commenced to hang out to a point approaching the home turn where it finished on the outside fence. Trainer G. NEWHAM advised Stewards that SEA HARVEY would be sent for a spell. Stewards ruled that SEA HARVEY must compete in a barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before it is permitted to race again.When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of ZULU ZEAL today B. PREBBLE explained that his mount was fractious in the barriers and refused to settle in the early stages therefore, he elected to go forward and took up a position closure to the lead. Whilst he acknowledged that this was in contrast to its previous racing pattern he felt in the circumstances he was left with no other option.A Veterinary examination of ZULU ZEAL after the race revealed some minor abrasions to the off hind leg and the gelding was sent to be swabbed. It was also noted that ZULU ZEAL had lost its off hind plate in running.NINE WINNERS PLUS SPACE AGE, ZULU ZEAL AND ADJUDICATOR WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
