PANEL: MR D AURISCH and MR M TUTT (CADET)

RACE 1 – ASHMORE WHOLESALE FRUIT MARKETS (TWO-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES

When the pace slackened leaving the 1,000 metres ROAR commenced to race fiercely when being restrained off the heels of DEUXIEME.

Leaving the 600 metres DEUXIEME and ROSE OF SIMON commenced to hang out. DEUXIEME hung out in the straight to such a degree that its rider, D TANTI, had difficulty riding his mount out in his normal manner.

RACE 2 – GRACE ELECTRONICS SAFETY CAMERAS (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES

No report

RACE 3 – AUSTRALIAN MONEY EXCHANGE (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 2.200 METRES

Rounding the turn near the 1,400 metres TOP RUN became unbalanced when placed in restricted room inside SALANZA and made contact with the running rail.

Leaving the 1,000 metres SALANZA became unbalanced and lost ground when BARBARIANS shifted in slightly. App. T IKENUSHI (BARBARIANS) was reminded of his obligations to his fellow riders.

BARBARIANS raced wide throughout.

RACE 4 – EXTRA FILM PHOTO PROCESSING (COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES) CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

D TANTI was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on BIG POONGA today and he explained that the trainer, MR G OSBORNE, had expressed disappointment with the gelding’s past performances when it showed a lack of early speed therefore was told to use spurs on the horse and ride it along early to take up a forward position. D TANTI further added that once this occurred he had difficulty holding the horse to a reasonable tempo, hence BIG POONGA was able to break 46 seconds for the first 800 metres. Stewards will advise Trainer G OSBORNE of his obligations under the rules to notify such changes in riding tactics to the stewards at a reasonable time before the race.

A veterinary examination was ordered of DASHING DONEGAL after it raced untractably and compounded in the straight. This revealed DASHING DONEGAL to be suffering from respiratory distress. Trainer Mr K TYQUIN indicated to the stewards that the gelding would continue its racing career in North Queensland, however, stewards advised him that the horse would be required to compete in an official barrier trial to the satisfaction of stewards before it is permitted to race again.

RACE 5 – INSURANCE AID GENERAL BROKERS MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES

On jumping IMPERIAL ECHO shifted out and made heavy contact with NAKED SPUR causing that horse to lose ground.

Leaving the 800 metres JUST FAITH commenced to hang out.

Approaching the 400 metres SEA OF DARKNESS made contact with the runner to its outside being SILVER AZURE and as a result became unbalanced when having to be restrained off the heels of RIVERNIDO which was weakening.

RACE 6 – GOLD COAST OLD BASTARDS (FILLIES AND MARES) CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

Trainer G RYAN was fined $50 for failing to have the Document of Description for PLAY. As the stewards were satisfied with the mare’s identity they permitted the horse to start.

LARNI blundered on jumping.

Shortly after the start PLAY was crowded for room between FLAME SKY and SECRET HEART which was taken out by COUNTESS DERBY. As a result of this incident PLAY lost ground.

In the early and middle stages of the race COUNTESS DERBY over-raced.

Rounding the home turn PLAY was checked when attempting to improve between SECRET HEART which shifted out slightly and COUNTESS DERBY which shifted in abruptly when weakening. Stewards were satisfied that the rider of COUNTESS DERBY, D TANTI, made sufficient effort to try and avoid the incident therefore no direct action was taken however, both D TANTI and T DUCKETT the rider of SECRET HEART were advised to exercise more care. A veterinary examination was ordered on PLAY which revealed no obvious abnormalities and the mare was sent to be swabbed.

RACE 7 – CAV’S STEAKHOUSE (CLASS 3) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

KARRLUH worked hard around to the barriers during its preliminary, was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

On jumping MOTIVATE was severely crowded between KWILA’S WISH and KARRLUH both of which shifted ground.

For a major part of the home straight MOTIVATE was disappointed for clear running and near the 200 metres was again checked when attempting a run where there was insufficient room between MIXED and FLYING EMAC which was taken out by KWILA’S WISH. KWILA’S WISH shifted out in an effort to also obtain clear running when held up behind PECAN BAY at the same stage.

RACE 8 –BILLY’S BEACH HOUSE (CLASS 5) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES

Rounding the home turn KALUI STAR was inclined to lay in and this placed MAY ROYAL and NEW SHOES in restricted room for a short distance.

EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED ALONG WITH PLAY
