GENERAL:
Mr J Loochi pleaded guilty to a charge under AR175(j) in that his behaviour towards a senior steward, Mr Bevan Turner, when leading GRACEFUL ANNA in the horse stall area was improper. Mr Loochi was fined the sum of $1,000.
Race 1: Brisbane Isuzu Class 6 Plate – 2200m
1st: Teary Eyed 2nd: Winmara 3rd: Che Casino 4th: Big Girls Dont Cry
In the early stages WARRIOR WITHIN (C Munce) pulled hard.
Stewards allowed Jockey G Colless (EASTLINE) an opportunity of explaining what on the face of it appeared to be a disappointing run. Jockey Colless said that EASTLINE sweated up rather badly before the race as it has done in the past. Jockey Colless also said that recently the blinkers had been taken from EASTLINE. He went on to say that the horse travelled well enough in the race, was inconvenienced slightly on the home turn when ROCKY GROUND (D Green) was weakening, but this had little effect on its performance and he was of the view that the horse did not race as well without the blinkers as has been anticipated.
Jockey L Cassidy (TRENCHTOWN) said that he enjoyed a nice run in the race and he was of the view that TRENCHTOWN travelled comfortably throughout but when placed under pressure the horse found very little.
A post-race veterinary examination of ROCKY GROUND (D Green) failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities.
Race 2: Magic Millions 2010 National Sale Class 6 H’cap – 1400m
1st: Lifebuoy 2nd: Duke Ivor 3rd: Start Again 4th: Thirty Seven Megs
App. J Wood (READY TO RISE) was severely reprimanded for failing to claim his full allowance.
ATHENAS GIFT (B El’Issa) left the gates awkwardly and was then ridden along to take up a position toward the front.
From a difficult gate INTERTHEBLACK (S Katsidis) was steadied on jumping, taken across behind the field to a position on the rail at the tail of the field, then in the straight at no stage was INTERTHEBLACK able to obtain clear running and finished the race off without being properly tested.
From an outside gate MAJESTIC SIGHT (S Seamer) was obliged to race wide throughout. At about the 1100m the horse which was racing ungenerously became unbalanced and blundered. After this, whilst wide, MAJESTIC SIGHT hung in.
At about the 1000m READY TO RISE became unbalanced when unnecessarily crowded by ATHENAS GIFT which was racing close to the heels of START AGAIN (P Robl). No direct action was taken however Jockey B El’Issa was told that he must make a greater effort to look after his fellow riders in future.
YUMMY (J Taylor) raced wide throughout the event.
A veterinary examination of DUKE IVOR (M Palmer) revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore fetlock. Trainer J Dann was advised that he must obtain a veterinary certificate of fitness for DUKE IVOR before it again races.
RED RAIDERS (J Byrne) suffered a bleeding attack during the event. The gelding will incur a mandatory 3 month ban from racing. A swab sample was taken from RED RAIDERS.
Race 3: Moreton Hire Ken Russell Memorial Classic 35th of Series 2YO Plate (Set weights: Colts & Geldings 56kg; Fillies 54kg) – 1200m
1st: Spirit of Boom 2nd: Adebisi 3rd: Jypsiere 4th: Audacious Spirit
IF IT CAN IT WILL (L Cassidy) was slow away.
UPON THIS ROCK (M Rodd) which jumped away awkwardly shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of WILD PROMISES (M Cahill).
Shortly after the start AUDACIOUS SPIRIT (D Browne) shifted in making contact with SPIRIT OF BOOM (S Katsidis).
In the early stages DEBUT (P Robl) had a tendency to race ungenerously and throw its head about.
Also in the early stages BUST ‘N’ LOOSE (H Bowman) had a tendency to over-race and proved difficult to settle.
At about the 800m DEBUT got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of CHLOE’S DREAM (D Griffin).
Near the 800m crowding occurred to UPON THIS ROCK, CHLOE’S DREAM (D Griffin) and RAPID LEICA DANE (B Shinn). It was established that at about this time AUDACIOUS SPIRIT (D Browne) shifted across to a position in front of SPIRIT OF BOOM when clear but then steadied from behind ADEBISI (S Scriven). The interference to the runners previously mentioned was significant however Stewards did not believe that today D Browne (AUDACIOUS SPIRIT) by steadying as he did, had breached the careless riding rule however he was severely reprimanded and told he should exercise more care than this in future.
At about the 400m BUST ‘N’ LOOSE which had been over-racing throughout became unbalanced when close to the heels of WILD PROMISES which was giving ground. At about the same time RAPID LEICA DANE made the turn awkwardly and shifted out abruptly away from the heels of SPIRIT OF BOOM. As a consequence of this MUNDI GULLY (D Whitmore) and UPON THIS ROCK were inconvenienced and obliged to make the turn wide. Inconvenience was also caused to PARIS BLU (M Walker) and DEMANDING MISS (C Munce). Whilst the interference that occurred was of some significance the Stewards were not able to attribute responsibility to any one rider or riders and accordingly no action was taken. However, all those involved were advised to exercise care at all times.
Near the 300m Jockey L Cassidy (IF IT CAN IT WILL) dropped his whip.
A post-race veterinary examination of UPON THIS ROCK revealed no apparent abnormalities.
Race 4: H Harvey Prestige Gold Coast Bracelet 3YO fillies Plate (Set weights: 55.5 kg) – 1800m
1st: Femina Fashion 2nd: Marheta 3rd: Status Quo 4th: Bitasilk
The start of this race was delayed as MARHETA (M Zahra) had to be re-saddled upon arrival at the barriers.
Throughout the race HEAD NORTH (B Melham) which was drawn awkwardly was obliged to race wide throughout and without cover.
Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight LINKY DINK (P Robl) was held up and unable to improve.
Jockey B Shinn rider of STATUS QUO said that he followed HEAD NORTH but when he could see that filly was not going forward he shifted from behind it and commenced his run. He said rather than interrupt his filly’s run he continued endeavouring to go forward rounding the home turn although wide.
Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey M Cahill with regard to the performance of DEVOIRS in today’s race. Jockey Cahill explained he was advised by the connections that the filly is best suited when able to get to the outside to finish its races off however he was unable to do this today as he was racing inside horses. Jockey Cahill further added that DEVOIRS may not run out a strong 1800m. A post race veterinary examination of DEVOIRS revealed no apparent abnormalities.
Race 5: Attwood Marshall Lawyers Silk Stocking Fillies and Mares H’cap (Max Hcp Wgt 61kg; Min Hcp Wgt 53kg) – 1200m
1st: Graceful Anna 2nd: Kanzan 3rd: Conquering Queen 4th: Plain Magic
WARRIOR GIRL was a late withdrawal at 2.36 pm by order of the Stewards after the filly refused to enter the barriers. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on WARRIOR GIRL were ordered to be refunded. All winning bets were ordered to be paid less 9 cents in the dollar for a win and 10 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket. Trainer M Thexton was advised that before WARRIOR GIRL can race again it must perform to the satisfaction of an official starter on at least 2 occasions.
KISANI (J Holder) and GO JOHEMMA (J Taylor) were both slow to begin.
Approaching the 900m RARE DIAMOND (M Rodd) had to be eased to avoid the heels of GENERAL SECRETARY (M Cahill) which was taken in by PLAIN MAGIC (J Byrne) which shifted in when not sufficiently clear. Jockey Byrne was issued with a reprimand and advised to provide more clearance when shifting ground in future.
After passing the 900m PLAIN MAGIC continued to shift in resulting in GENERAL SECRETARY being taken in to a point where the mare made heavy contact with GRACEFUL ANNA.
Near the 700m KISS ME KATY (R Wiggins) which was hanging out, shifted out taking GENERAL SECRETARY out on to VERBALLED (S Seamer).
VERBALLED and CASHOLET (C Munce) raced wide throughout the event.
KANZAN (P Robl) was unable to improve rounding the home turn when held up for clear running.
G Yorke Trainer of RARE DIAMOND said that the horse had displayed good form on wet tracks previously and although today’s track was rated slow, he did not think RARE DIAMOND was comfortable. He said it is also his intention to find races of more distance for the horse in future.
Race 6:Carlton Mid Gold Coast Guineas 3YO Plate (Set weights: Colts & Geldings 56kg; Fillies 54kg) – 1200m
1st: Beethog 2nd: Temple of Boom 3rd: Fifteen Carat 4th: D/Heat Phelan Ready & Stryker
On Thursday 6 May 2010, Stewards enquired into a dual engagement involving Jockey Glen Colless being expected to ride STREETS AWAY and PAPRIKA. On that day it was decided Jockey Colless would ride PAPRIKA. Today Stewards interviewed Jockey Glen Colless in relation to the matters which led to this situation arising. It was established that his manager had accepted the ride for him on PAPRIKA with the proviso he would get back to the Trainer of PAPRIKA if Jockey Colless was required by his stable to ride STREETS AWAY. Mr Bird failed to carry out this part of the arrangement and as a result Stewards today believed that Jockey Colless was guilty of negligence in that a breach of AR175(k) could have quite easily occurred. Jockey Colless acknowledged that there had been a breach of the rule committed and in all the circumstances of this case Stewards believed the appropriate penalty was that he be fined $200.
SPOT ON TARGET was a late withdrawal at 3.13 pm by order of the Stewards on veterinary advice. As SPOT ON TARGET was 60/1 there were no deductions declared.
PHELAN READY (S Katsidis) and STRYKER (J Cassidy) raced wide throughout the event.
Jockey H Bowman (LOCHIEL) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in near the 800m when insufficiently clear of DEER VALLEY (J Byrne) resulting in DEER VALLEY being tightened on to the running rail and losing its rightful running. Jockey Bowman was suspended from riding in races for a period of 8 meetings to commence midnight 15/05/2010 and to expire midnight 27/05/2010.
After losing its rightful running DEER VALLEY shifted out and bumped SWISS ROSE (M Rodd)out onto PRINCESS QUALO (D Browne) which was forced wider on the track.
In the straight FIFTEEN CARAT (B Pengelly) had difficulty obtaining clear running and in the run to the line had to be shifted out to get a run and near the winning post bumped DEER VALLEY as it found running and went forward.
Jockey M Palmer (TIERQUALO) explained that he enjoyed quite a good run in the race but was crowded slightly on the home turn however, after this the horse did not close the race off as he expected it would. He did think that the drop in distance today may not have suited TIERQUALO but generally speaking he thought the run was disappointing.
A post race veterinary examination was carried out on PAPRIKA and PRINCESS QUALO with no significant findings detected.
It was reported that EDITAVE lost its near fore plate in running.
Race 7: Lincom Pacific Equipment A.D. – Lincom Group Hollindale Stakes (Standard Weight for Age) – 1800m
1st: Metal Bender 2nd: Road to Rock 3rd: Gold Water 4th: Rothera
Acting on veterinary advice that the gelding was lame in the off hind leg, SNAPY HALO (M Rodd) was a late withdrawal at 2.10 pm by order of the Stewards.
GOLD WATER (S Scriven) was presented to race without blinkers. Trainer G Waterhouse was fined the sum of $200.
RIVA SAN (M Cahill) was slow to begin.
FULMONTI (L Cassidy) hung in when placed under pressure to improve leaving the 600m.
ROAD TO ROCK (S Katsidis) was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn behind the heels of PEPPERWOOD.
ROTHERA (J Holder) raced three wide throughout the event.
Race 8: Bovis Lend Lease Prime Minister’s Cup (Max Hcp Wgt 61kg; Min Hcp Wgt 53kg) – 1300m
1st: Drenalin 2nd: Mr Baritone 3rd: Secrets Untold 4th: Rasmussen
BORSHA’S WARRIOR (JP Stanley) jumped away awkwardly and was then tightened for room between SECRETS UNTOLD (S Katsidis) and MR BARITONE (M Zahra) which was taken in by CORNWALL PARK (S Seamer).
A short distance after the start RIGHTSON blundered.
Approaching the 900m MR BARITONE (M Zahra) shifted in and away from RED SPHERE resulting in SECRETS UNTOLD (S Katsidis) being tighted for room and taken in onto HARD TO CATCH (D Griffin)which had to be steadied.
RAMPANT LION (S Scriven) and BORSHA’S WARRIOR (JP Stanley) raced wide throughout the event.
When questioned as to the performance of CORNWALL PARK, Jockey S Seamer stated that the horse over-raced today and due to this it did not finish the race off. Jockey Seamer also indicted that CORNWALL PARK may be better suited being stepped up to 1600m. Trainer A Bailey stated that the horse was somewhat stirred up today which is not normal for the horse.
When questioned as to the performance of RAMPANT LION, Jockey S Scriven explained that the gelding was under pressure from the 600m and he elected in the home straight to shift wider on the track in an attempt to improve his position. Jockey Scriven added that RAMPANT LION was disappointing and he failed to ride the gelding out over the final 100m as he formed the opinion that something was amiss with the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination of RAMPANT LION revealed the gelding to be lame in the off fore leg. Trainer L Gough was advised that he must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness before RAMPANT LION again races.
When questioned as to the performance of BAQABA, Jockey L Cassidy explained that he attempted to improve his position from the 600m however BAQABA didn’t quicken as he expected and in his view the run of the gelding was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of BAQABA revealed no apparent abnormalities.
