STARSPUN (D. Tanti) was slow to begin.

DOZING STAMPEDE (App T. Harrison) overraced in the early stages when being restrained to take up a position with cover behind MORATORIO (D. Missen). DOZING STAMPEDE continued to overrace for some distance thereafter.

When the pace steadied approaching the 1400m STARSPUN moved wider on the track before obtaining the lead near the 1200m.

TOUGH TACTICS (App R. Hurdle) commenced to hang out from a point leaving the 1400m and continued to do so for the remainder of the event. As a result TOUGH TACTICS proved difficult to ride and finished the race tailed off. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer T. Thomas reported that the gelding would now be retired. Acting on this advice stewards took no further action.

STARSPUN commenced to lay in under pressure in the home straight and near the 250m TUSHUK (App A. Badger) and STARSPUN came together and brushed.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on DOZING STAMPEDE, particularly approaching and rounding the home turn, App T. Harrison stated she was instructed to ride the filly with cover towards the rear of the field and bearing in mind the heavy track conditions to save it for a final sprint over the final 400m. App Harrison also noted she had ridden the filly previously and it had shown a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure. In light of the instructions and previous racing manners App Harrison stated that from a point leaving the 800m she was satisfied trailing MORATORIO which she noted was a fancied runner. App Harrison added that from a point leaving the 600m she attempted to improve to the inside of MORATORIO, bearing in mind that DOZING STAMPEDE has shown a tendency to lay in at its previous starts. App Harrison further added that near the 400m she was momentarily disappointed for a run to the inside of MORATORIO after which the filly finished the race off fairly despite again wanting to lay in under pressure. Trainer R. Milne confirmed the instructions and the previous racing manners of DOZING STAMPEDE. Bearing in mind the instructions and previous racing manners stewards accepted their explanations however, advised App Harrison that in future she must make every endeavour to give her mounts clear running.
