1st – Studio 2nd – Buffett 3rd – Mukaddamah Son 4th – Count Encosta

When asked to explain the seemingly improved performance of BUFFETT (E. Wilkinson) trainer B. Hill explained that the horse was taken on in the lead at its last start which resulted in the horse weakening over the concluding stages. Mr Hill went on to say that BUFFETT was able to dictate terms in the lead today unchallenged which obviously suits its racing pattern.
Race 2: CTJ Diamond Benchmark 85 H’Cap – 1200m
1st – Peron 2nd – Whitesails 3rd – Spatha 4th – Keep It Moist

ARADO (App A. Allen) was slow to begin.

SINISTER PRINCE (J. Byrne) jumped awkwardly and shifted in making heavy contact with SIGNPOST (C. Munce).

An inquiry was adjourned into the reason for PERON (M. Cahill) having to be checked near the 900m.

Rounding the home turn BALKUIN (App T. Harrison) was inclined to lay out and upon straightening shifted ground outwards resulting in PERON (M. Cahill), which was attempting to obtain clear running to that horse’s outside being inconvenienced. As a result of this THEFT (App P. Schmidt) and ASSIMILATOR (E. Wilkinson) were both hampered.

THEFT and ASSIMILATOR both raced 3 wide throughout the event.

App K. Matheson reported that WHAT HAPPENEDHENRY was inclined to lay in in the early stages of the home straight which made it difficult for him to bring the horse to the outside of the heels of ASSIMILATOR.

KEEP IT MOIST lost an off hind plate during running.

Race 3: Moreton Hire Ken Russell Memorial Classic 2YO SW Listed – 1200m
1st – Le Val 2nd – Londehero 3rd – Diamond Oasis 4th – Missy Longstocking

PRIMAL FLIGHT (N. Berry) became fractious in the barriers and momentarily cast. PRIMAL FLIGHT was removed, examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

SKYTASTIC (B. Stewart) was slow to begin.

HYDRAZINE (A. Pattillo) hung out rounding the home turn resulting in ENQUARE (J. Byrne) being inconvenienced and taken wider on the track.

MISSY LONGSTOCKING (D. Browne) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn until leaving the 250m.

DIAMOND OASIS (J. Cassidy) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn until the 200m when awkwardly placed between LITTLE MISS SMILEY (R. Wiggins) and PRIMAL FLIGHT. DIAMOND CLASS then had to alter course to the outside of the heels of PRIMAL FLIGHT after passing the 200m in order to improve.

HYDRAZINE and ENQUARE also raced wide throughout the event.
When asked to explain the disappointing performance of FLORID AFFAIR rider T. Clark stated that the filly had to do some work when racing 3 wide without cover until entering the home straight and when placed under pressure did not quicken. T. Clark added tha t in his opinion FLORID AFFAIR has come to the end of its preparation. A post race veterinary examination of FLORID AFFAIR revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative Mark Newnham advised that FLORID AFFAIR will now be sent for an immediate spell.

Prior to the declaration of correct weight App R. Jamieson applied to stewards to have her mount declared a non-runner on the basis that shortly before the start was effected the near side rear barrier gate opened when BUSY DOIN’ NOTHIN’ shifted back in the barrier stalls. After taking submissions from App Jamieson and trainer H. Norman and viewing the films, which confirmed App Jamieson’s version, stewards formed the view that whilst the near side rear barrier gate did open prior to the start this did not amount to a denial of a fair start and correct weight was semaphored.

EMVOSS (B. Avdulla) was slow to begin.

VENTURE ON (C. Whiteley) overraced and got its head in the air in the early stages of the event.

Approaching the 1000m EMVOSS commenced to overrace and when being restrained shifted out taking TAIL AND ALL (R. Wiggins) wider on the track. A short distance later TAIL AND ALL shifted in momentarily tightening the running of VENTURE ON, which when restrained overreacted and got its head up.

Passing the 600m PELLEGRINI (G. Colless) shied at the infield and shifted out slightly.

BUSY DOIN’ NOTHIN’ had difficulty securing clear running in the home straight and as a result went to the line not fully tested by its rider.

MARCULOO (T. Clark), EMVOSS and ZAMBONI (K. Wharton) all raced wide throughout the event.

When asked to explain the performance of TAIL AND ALL rider R. Wiggins stated that the gelding travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages but failed to respond to his riding from the 400m and was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of TAIL AND ALL failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer R. Near the 700m HOLD ME TIGHT (M. Cahill) had to be eased when tightened for room between GERMAYNE LASS (R. Wiggins) and PURRINGA, which hung in despite the efforts of its rider.

After passing the 400m HOLD ME TIGHT had to be steadied when tightened for room between PURRINGA, which was hanging in and FIESTY BELLE (N. Berry), which shifted out slightly.

NEVER DESPAIR (K. Matheson) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and for a major part of the home straight and went to the line not fully tested.

In the early stages of the straight until near the 250m ANTARCTIC DREAM (P. Hammersley) was held up when awkwardly placed on the heels of the tiring VAQUERA (T. Clark).

A post race veterinary examination of VAQUERA revealed no abnormalities. Mr Newnham undertook to advise stewards of anything that comes to light in the following days that may have explained the filly’s poor performance.

Stewards sought an explanation from M. Cahill regarding the performance of HOLD ME TIGHT. M. Cahill stated that although the filly met with some interference between the 700m until soon after straightening he was disappointed that HOLD ME TIGHT did not quicken under riding over the final 300m. M. Cahill further added that HOLD ME TIGHT raced flat today and may be feeling the affects of recent racing. Trainer B. Baldwin will discuss with connections in the coming days whether to proceed with the current preparation and will advise stewards of the outcome.
