GENERAL
As Jockey D Missen was indisposed due to personal reasons, Stewards permitted rider replacements as per Stewards Race Day Summary.
App. Brendon Newport was reprimanded for failing to produce his winning rides book.
Race 1: The Lobby Bar at Jupiters F & M Class 3 H’cap – 1200m
1st – Spurs and Sashes 2nd – Roman Conflict 3rd – Destiny’s Lass 4th – Champagne Blaze
LA MINA (C Schmidt) raced wide during the early stages of the event.
SPURS AND SASHES (B Appo) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
Leaving the 300m a towel fell from ROMAN CONFLICT (K Forrester). Prior to declaring correct weight, Stewards established that the towel was handed to Jockey Forrester at the barriers to wipe sweat from ROMAN CONFLICT. Jockey Forrester forgot to return the towel to the barrier attendants and as such carried the towel on the wither of ROMAN CONFLICT during the early and middle stages of the event. As the towel did not form part of the gear which Jockey Forrester weighed out with, Stewards were satisfied that ROMAN CONFLICT had carried its correct weight and subsequently declared correct weight. Jockey Forrester was fined the sum of $100 for his negligent actions.
Stewards questioned App. A Hearn as to his riding of DESTINY’S LASS passing the 200m. App. Hearn stated that he was endeavouring to shift to the outside of LET IT SNOW (S Fawke) to obtain clear running, however, was of the view that he was going to be disappointed for a run due to LET IT SNOW continuing to shift out and LA MINA being positioned to his outside. As a consequence he elected to shift back to the inside of LET IT SNOW to secure clear running. Stewards noted the explanation.
A post-race veterinary examination of ON ICE NOW (J Orman) revealed the mare to have cast its off fore plate in running and to be slightly sore in that same leg as a consequence. Trainer L Fraser advised Stewards that ON ICE NOW does wear glue-on shoes and the mare’s poor performance would be attributed to it losing the shoe.
Race 2: Osteria Vivo 3 for 33 Maiden Plate – 1400m
1st – All Host 2nd – Shah San Gabriel 3rd – Chief Justice 4th – Almasea
ALMASEA (J Orman) stood flat-footed as the start was effected and lost ground. Trainer L Fraser was advised that a warning would be placed on the mare’s barrier manners.
OTHER WAY (N Masuda) began awkwardly.
MOZ ZOOM (C Schmidt) and MUST BID (L Rolls) were slow to begin.
MUST BID which commenced to weaken in the home straight collapsed near the 200m dislodging Jockey L Rolls. A veterinary examination of MUST BID revealed the filly to have sustained a severe bleeding attack and was euthanised on humane grounds.
Leaving the 200m ALL HOST (P Holmes) shifted out marginally and inconvenienced BRIGADOON AFFAIR (A Hearn).
When questioned as to the tempo set in the early and middle stages by CHIEF JUSTICE Jockey M Vance stated that she was instructed to lead on the gelding. Jockey Vance added that she was able to obtain the lead with relative ease and during the early stages she attempted to restrain CHIEF JUSTICE to take up a trailing position behind BRIGADOON AFFAIR, however, the gelding commenced to race strongly and as such she was content to allow it to stride forward to the lead. Jockey Vance further added that CHIEF JUSTICE continued to race strongly in the middle stages despite her efforts. Jockey Vance noted that CHIEF JUSTICE had displayed similar racing manners at its last start. Her explanation was noted.
A post-race veterinary examination of ALL HOST revealed the gelding to be lame in the near hind leg. Trainer L Kelly will be advised that he must obtain a veterinary certificate of fitness before ALL HOST races again.
Jockey C Maund (SHAH SAN GABRIEL) was reprimanded for using his whip in a forehand manner on more than the permitted number of occasions prior to the 100m.
Race 3: J Bar at Jupiters F & M Class 1 H’cap – 1400m
1st – Brown Water 2nd – Cool Trick 3rd – Can She Move 4th – Dead Heat Lady De Retz & Hidden Dancer
SPINNING HEAT (S Fawke) was slow to begin.
BROWN WATER (A Hearn) was hampered shortly after the start between HIDDEN DANCER (L Cheshire) and ROYAL REWARD (M Vance) which shifted out.
ROYAL REWARD over-raced at the heels of HIDDEN BID (C Schmidt) for a considerable distance passing the 900m.
Race 4: Entwine at Jupiters C, G & E Class 1 H’cap – 1400m
1st – Thaiday 2nd – Burning Sails 3rd – Gold Deal 4th – Oolooloo
As App. A Butler was to be overweight, he was replaced on NEOMAGIC by Jockey L Cheshire. Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by App. Butler.
GOLD DEAL (P Holmes) was held up in the early stages of the home straight when disappointed for a run between HI CODY (JK Johnson) and RUN FOR EVER (J Morris).
Over the concluding stages GOLD DEAL had to be steadied from the heels of THAIDAY (L Rolls) which shifted out under pressure.
Jockey C Maund (OOLOOLOO) dropped his whip over the concluding stages of the event.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on THAIDAY, Jockey L Rolls stated that he was instructed to take up a forward position from the inside barrier. Jockey Rolls added that after beginning well he was able to maintain a forward position with relative ease. Trainer M Eggleston confirmed the instructions which were issued on the basis that THAIDAY was stepping up in distance and that there was no speed in today’s race. Mr Eggleston added that from a wide barrier at its last start he had issued similar instructions, however, on that occasion after being ridden aggressively in the early stages THAIDAY was only able to obtain a mid-field position and raced wide throughout. Mr Eggleston noted that THAIDAY had shown a tendency to over-race previously and bearing in mind the lack of speed was reluctant to have THAIDAY positioned behind other horses. Whilst noting the circumstances of today’s race, Stewards reminded Mr Eggleston of his obligations to advise them of any perceived change of tactics.
Race 5: The Food Fantasy 3YO H’cap – 1400m
1st – Abu Ben Adam 2nd – Moon and the Stars 3rd – Vintage Cognac 4th – Prussian Heart
As Jockey B Evans was indisposed due to injury, he was replaced on TINTS by Jockey P Holmes.
MOON AND THE STARS (L Rolls) and PRUSSIAN HEART (C Whiteley) made contact on jumping away when both horses shifted ground.
PRUSSIAN HEART and HEARTBREAK HARRY (S Fawke) over-raced during the early stages of the event.
When questioned as to the tactics adopted on ABU BEN ADAM (J Johnson) which led today, Trainer P Duff stated that his instructions were to lead from the wide barrier. Mr Duff advised that after beginning well ABU BEN ADAM was able to obtain the lead with relative ease. Mr Duff indicated that ABU BEN ADAM performed best when able to take up a forward position and circumstances at its previous two starts had prevented the gelding from being ridden in a forward position. Mr Duff added that where possible, ABU BEN ADAM would be ridden in a similar fashion.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of HEARTBREAK HARRY, Trainer J Morrisey was of the view that the gelding may not run out a strong 1400m. Mr Morrisey stated that the increase in distance combined with the 57kg impost contributed to the poor performance.
When questioned, App. A Butler stated that his instructions were to have VINTAGE COGNAC positioned where comfortable. He was of the opinion that he would have had to ride VINTAGE COGNAC aggressively in the early stages to obtain a forward position so he was content to steady the gelding and take up a trailing position behind HEARTBREAK HARRY. App. Butler added that this was VINTAGE COGNAC’s first start in a clockwise direction and as a result the gelding was inclined to hang out rounding the home turn and in the home straight.
App. B Newport was reprimanded for failing to ride ROWA’S MARK out to the end of the race.
Race 6: The Ultimate Vegas Show at Jupiters H’cap – 2200m
1st – Patent Pending 2nd – Lucky Day Kid 3rd – Rock the Pac 4th – Kayno
ALL COIN (A Spinks) began awkwardly and lost ground.
DECILLION (P Holmes) began awkwardly.
SERALA (K Forrester) and KAYNO (L Rolls) raced wide during the early stages of the event.
Passing the 700m BOARDWALK (C Whiteley) commenced to improve into the race and in doing so shifted out forcing ROUSSOS DESTINY (R Vigar) wider on the track. ROUSSOS DESTINY raced wide from that point onwards.
Rounding the home turn BOARDWALK was awkwardly placed at the heels of SERALA for some distance and when endeavouring to shift out to improve bumped ROUSSOS DESTINY on a number of occasions.
LUCKY DAY KID (JK Johnson) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
DECILLION was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and leaving the 400m shifted out to improve and in doing so inconvenienced ALEXTHEASTRONOMER (L Cheshire).
App. C Schmidt reported that after beginning only fairly she was obliged to take up a position just worse of mid-field. She added that ROCK THE PAC had raced in a forward position at its two previous starts when inclined to over-race. App. Schmidt was therefore of the view that ROCK THE PAC was better suited to be ridden with cover where it was able to settle. Trainer L Gough confirmed that ROCK THE PAC at its last start was caught wide early and as such was ridden forward to the lead and agreed with App. Schmidt that the horse is better suited ridden with cover.
When questioned as to the performance of SERALA, Jockey K Forrester was of the view that the filly may have failed to handle the short back-up from its last start. A post race veterinary examination of SERALA failed to reveal any abnormalities at the time of examination. Trainer reported that SERALA will be going for a spell.
Jockey L Rolls (KAYNO) was reprimanded for using his whip in a forehand manner on more than the permitted number of occasions prior to the 100m.
Race 7: Jupiters Hotel & Casino C, G & E Class 3 H’cap – 1200m
1st – Hydrazine 2nd – Telmemore 3rd – Karosse 4th – Brigadoon Legend
The start of this race was delayed for the running of an interstate event.
There was a delay to correct weight whilst Jockey Vance (TELMEMORE) sought to review the footage to ascertain whether she had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner, HYDRAZINE (L Rolls). After viewing the footage Jockey Vance declined to proceed with the objection and correct weight was declared.
I’M NO PUSSY (B Newport) began awkwardly and bumped TELMEMORE.
BRIGADOON LEGEND (A Hearn) shifted out at the start and inconvenienced LUCKY WARDY (B Appo).
Approaching the 1000m BELHARI BOY (A Spinks) and TELMEMORE had to be steadied when tightened for room between IRON JACKET (JK Johnson) which was inclined to lay out and FLAME FIGHTER (C Schmidt) which shifted in.
BRIGADOON LEGEND laid in under pressure over the concluding stages of the race.
When questioned as to the tempo set in the early and middle stages of the race, App. C Schmidt stated that she was instructed to lead and was obliged to place FLAME FIGHTER under pressure in the early stages so as to comply with her instructions. App. Schmidt added that once positioned in the lead FLAME FIGHTER commenced to race strongly despite her efforts to slow the tempo during the middle stages of the race.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of IRON JACKET, Trainer S Kendrick stated that the colt had performed best when able to lead. Mr Kendrick noted that despite the efforts of App. Johnson, IRON JACKET was unable to muster sufficient speed to maintain the lead in the early stages which he felt contributed to its disappointing performance. Mr Kendrick undertook to advise stewards should anything come to light in the days subsequent which may have had a bearing on the colt’s disappointing performance.
Stewards will interview App. A Hearn as to his riding of BRIGADOON LEGEND over the concluding stages of the race.
Race 8: Atrium Bar at Jupiters H’cap – 1300m
1st – Platinum State 2nd – Substation 3rd – Hush Power 4th – River Spirit
Near the 1000m DIET (P Holmes) when over-racing had to be steadied when tightened for room between RIVER SPIRIT (C Schmidt) and SUBSTATION (A Spinks) which shifted in. Jockey A Spinks was reprimanded and advised to make a greater effort to keep his mounts straight in similar circumstances in future. At the same point EMMERTT (A Pattillo) and RIVER SPIRIT commenced to over-race when being steadied from the heels of PLATINUM STATE (JK Johnson) and COURTZ BOY (B Appo) when the pace of the race slowed.
SUBSTATION (A Spinks) raced wide in the early stages of the event.
When questioned as to his riding of BIG KEN THE CELT rounding the home turn, Jockey L Rolls stated that BIG KEN THE CELT over-raced at the heels of EMMERTT (A Pattillo) in the middle stages. Jockey Rolls added that approaching the home turn he attempted to improve to the outside of EMMERTT however he was disappointed for that run between DIET (P Holmes) and EMMERTT which shifted out and as a consequence was held up for a short distance. Jockey Rolls added that he had been instructed to shift to the outside of the field in the home straight however due to other runners being positioned directly to his outside he was unable to comply with those instructions.
When questioned as to the tactics adopted on PLATINUM STATE, App. Johnson stated her instructions were to take up a handy position with cover however after beginning well she was content to allow the gelding to stride forward to the lead.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of DIET, Jockey P Holmes stated that he had been instructed to lead however the gelding was unable to must sufficient speed in the early stages. Jockey Holmes expressed his disappointment in the performance of DIET. Stewards will interview Trainer B Herne at a later date.
