RACE 1: WINOOKA QTIS 3YO Maiden Plate – 900m 1st: Atomic Missile 2nd: Miss Oratorio 3rd: Cartwheelin Charli 4th: Believe It Or Not CARTWHEELIN CHARLI – Shortly after the start had to be steadied when tightened for room between runners and lost ground. Jockey R. McMahon reported to stewards that after receiving tightening shortly after the start and losing some ground he was obliged to race further back than anticipated. Jockey McMahon added that the filly raced greenly throughout and finished the race off strongly and would derive benefit from the experience of today’s race. MISS ORATORIO – Commenced to hang out from the 600m until entering the home straight. ATOMIC MISSILE – Rounding the home turn shifted out to improve and in doing so made contact with WHO’S MY DAD, which in turn shifted out making contact with TOECANARGIE MAN, which was forced wider. In this incident jockey N. Thomas (ATOMIC MISSILE) was advised to exercise more care. When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance trainer T. Thomas stated that the gelding has been racing wide in its most recent starts however, today was able to obtain a position with cover and therefore as a result was able to finish its race off. Mr Thomas added that the addition of blinkers also attributed to the improved performance. Stewards noted his comments. BEYOND BRAVE – Inconvenienced near the 200m. WHO’S MY DAD – Raced wide without cover for the majority. TOECANARGIE MAN - Raced wide 3 wide throughout. BELIEVE IT OR NOT – When questioned regarding the performance jockey J. Jockey Morris added that he was of the view that the gelding may have come to the end of its current preparation. VOL VALLEE – When afforded the opportunity to comment on the disappointing performance jockey M. Hellyer stated that the filly raced greenly throughout after obtaining the leading position. Jockey Hellyer added that he had recommended to connections that the filly may be better suited being ridden with cover to allow it to finish the race off. A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer D. Murphy was advised he would be required to provide the results of an ECG prior to the filly racing again. Mr Murphy confirmed that it was now his intention to send the filly for an immediate spell. Laming advised stewards it was his intention to retire the gelding from racing. LEFKAS ISLAND – Began awkwardly. ONE PIECE – Near the 1200m was hampered by LEFKAS ISLAND, which shifted in abruptly despite the efforts of its rider. Raced 3 wide without cover in the early stages before obtaining a position outside the leader near the 900m. KERMANDIE STAR – Hampered at the start and lost ground. Overraced in the early stages at the rear of the field. Stable representative D. Barron advised that in his opinion the mare may not have handled the firm track conditions. Stewards opened an inquiry into the riding tactics adopted on both WALTZ IN FLIGHT (App C. Bayliss) and SHE GOES POP (App J. Hodge). Of concern to the stewards was the tempo set in the early and middle stages when leading the field by a considerable distance. After taking initial evidence from apprentices C. Bayliss and J. Hodge, together with evidence from stable representative T. Edmonds and trainer of WALTZ IN FLIGHT B. Dais, stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date and time to be fixed to allow both apprentices’ masters to be present. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance jockey J. Jockey Morris added that the gelding commenced to weaken from the 600m and again despite his urgings failed to finish the race off and proved most disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering from mild heat stress and a swab sample was taken for analysis. Trainer Mrs H. Page was advised that in light of today’s performance the gelding would be required to officially trial prior to racing again. Correct weight was delayed when trainer S. Henley made application to have PAJADOS declared a non-runner as he was of the view that it was not afforded a fair start. After taking evidence and viewing the official films stewards established that PAJADOS had become fractious and reared simultaneously as the start was effected and took no competitive part in the race. Therefore, stewards were of the view that it was as a result of the gelding’s barrier manners and declared the gelding a runner. Stewards advised Mr Henley that the gelding would require a further barrier certificate before racing again. CAPTAIN EYCHE – Held up for a short distance entering the home straight. SOLICITATION – Raced wide without cover throughout. STEWARDS RACE DAY SUMMARY Summary of action concerning licensees ReprimandsRace 3. C. Schmidt – Jockey - Overweight - AR120(b) *Race 6. M.
